You were talking about buying teams as a pattern hasn’t worked. I think we are in the first qtr knowing if that pattern holds or not.
I actually think recruiting and retaining with gap filler transfers will be the winning strategy.
Agree
Yeah there are some that say the portal combined with NIL has made HS recruiting irrelevant. I completely disagree. Its just changed the way in which you go about it, but signing/retaining classes is still more important than filling your roster with portal guys. Its also shown to be more of a recipe for success.
My 2 cents: continue to focus on HS kids. You can get them cheaper. And it’s easier to create loyalty. Get your portal guys only as needed. Like, if you’re just missing a couple of pieces to compete for a championship…then go get a couple of pieces from the portal. Portal kids may be more expensive, too. See: The softball pitcher at Texas Tech last year. But continue focusing on HS kids.
It’s been discussed numerous times how CFB now, for all intents and purposes, is the NFL model which includes the element you just described.
HS now = drafted rookies developed within a system
Portal = free agents
Agree. Use the portal to fill gaps. Its really the same theory that you used to do when signing JUCO guys. The problem with signing JUCO guys then and portal guys now is that it leaves gaps in your roster. You ideally have a number that you want to sign out of HS every year to fill out your roster. When you dont do that and go the JUCO/Portal route, you end up chasing your tail. And if those transfer/portal guys dont hit…youre in trouble
Except at quarterback at OU. You supposedly had the best kid out of high school then had to go to the portal again, just like the last 10 years.
Exactly! Saban said it on Gameday one time, “If you’re paying the wrong guys, you’re sh-t out of luck!” ![]()
" Use the portal to fill gaps" I think thats exactly what I said… Theres no bigger gap than one that exists at the QB spot.
“You supposedly had the best kid out of high school then had to go to the portal again, just like the last 10 years.” There are a lot of holes in just one sentence. OU in the last 10 years signed the top rated QB one time (Rattler). The portal has only been around since 2018, so thats another wrong one. Didnt OSU get some QB’s from the portal too? Bowman, Hejny? OU got Hurts, Gabriel, Mateer. Isnt that kinda the way the game is nowadays?
Im guessing youre trying to somehow take a shot at OU for getting portal/transfer QB’s? They have. Not sure how that is a negative or somehow supposed to be a bad thing?
I’m not taking a shot at OU. I’m saying that getting a kid out of high school and developing them has not been the success for quarterbacks at OU. As for Gundy, he’s had 1 championship caliber quarterback period.
4 of the last 6 Champs have had transfer Qb’s-Stetson Bennett, Will Howard, Joe Burrow. Three of the top 6 ranked teams have transfer QB’s. Its how things are done nowadays.
It’s early but the dudes in the trenches at tech looked good. I was impressed.
I was flying back from Cody Wyoming, so I didn’t see much of anything football wise yesterday.
Good win. Tech can be a contender in the Big 12 on an annual basis. But it’s years of sustained recruiting & winning away from becoming what I would call a dent. The structure of things right now gives the SEC & Big 10 more advantages than it used to. Tech is going to have to beat those big boys on the field before they start making real noise. Winning Big 12 games is great for them. Not knocking it at all.
I heard they are getting a few more 5star trench guys too. I like what they are doing and like how the national podcasts guys are talking about them. They are building for more than this year.
I get it. Theyve done better than I thought they would with getting the commitment of a guy here or there that they typically wouldnt have. But with all of that success…theyre currently sitting 23rd in the recruiting rankings, which would be ranked 12th in the SEC. Again, theyre doing better. Theyve won a couple of battles for verbals that I didnt think they would. Theyre also having to pay a significant amout more for a guy than their competitors will. Theyve got the money. Thats not an issue. You probably give them a little too much credit…while I probably dont give them enough. We can agree that theyre undefeated and have had some recruiting success as of today. I dont think Texas Tech can buy their way into anything more than contending to win the Big 12 title.
We will see. The main issue they will have is depth this year but next year let’s see.
The main issue is QB. You cant win at the level youre hinting at without an elite one of those. They do not have that on their roster.
I am not worried about that. A great Oline and $s will attract several stud QBs.
So lets nail you down here on your take on the Red Raiders.
How long until they win the Big 12? Possibly this year, but they will within the next 3 years.
How long until they make the playoff? Same answer as above.
How long until they win a playoff game? They wont within the next 5 years
Will they eventually play for a Nat title? NO
If so, approximately how long will that take? NOT HAPPENING
