Report: Former New Mexico State O-Lineman Louie Canepa to Transfer to Oklahoma State

The scheduled concert at Boone Pickens Stadium "Boys from Oklahoma "has already brought in over $20 million just for NIL . They’ve said they plan on doing it again next year. What makes you think Gundy could find the players who could win the conference?

“How many actually waste it though”? Just out of curiosity, who is another program that you feel is comparable to OSU? Ive always said its a Mich. St type. A Baylor. At best, it could be a VaTech longterm. Im not sure where you think that Gundy has all this talent. OSU’s best years were 2010, 11’, 13’, 15’, 16’, 17’, 21’ & 23’. Gundy & Co. had 16 combined players drafted those years. Thats less than Baylor, Mich. St and Va Tech. If you want to argue Gundy’s willingness to go out and recruit…ill agree with you. But to say that hes wasting talent is simply not true.

Hang on. Dont assume im a Gundy believer/fan. I just think its ignorant to say what Gundy hasnt done without being willing to acknowledge what he has done. There are definitely things to criticize Gundy for, as well as things to applaud him for. There are a few of you who do nothing more than “troll” on here. Hell im an OU fan and some of the stuff that gets spewed on this site are fitting of being over on SoonerScoop

I’m not assuming anything but this BS of how we can’t afford to compete and win the conference. This season our coaching staff was paid with in $200,000 of what OU staff. Like I mentioned we have 20 million in the bank before we get the first penny from a donor. But Gundy couldn’t win the conference when there wasn’t NIL. I agree with you on the trolling, pointing out that Gundy can’t win the conference like K State and Baylor and can’t recruit better than the 50’s and 60’s is trolling.
We’ll get to see what Gundy’s record will be now that we won’t have the weakest non conference schedule in the conference.

Boss, you may wanna go see how many positions/analysts that OU and the SEC staffs pay. Salary as far as asst’s, OSU does a very good job. But they as a football staffing from top to bottom are not in the same world as the SEC guys.

“We cant afford to compete and win the conference”…OSU PLAYED IN THE CONF TITLE GAME A CALENDAR YEAR AGO. You people are justified in hammering Gundy for some stuff, but you guys that have amnesia in the whole “cant compete for conf titles deal”

You could be right but from what I’ve read within 200,000. As far as making it to to the conference championship game twice in the last 8 years and losing both while everyone claims we were the second best team in the conference I don’t agree with. In 21 we were the second best team in the conference last year not sure, all the other years obviously not.

Again, im not defending Gundy or saying hes a great HC. But people have a very, very short-memory of what OSU is.

I know exactly what OSU is, it’s a football program that has won two conference titles in the last 70 years. I know who Gundy is too. A guy who can never win the Big game and very seldom wins against his rival. Yet we pay him like he’s top 10 or 15 in the country.

By the way, OU is paying out $16.1mil in Coaches salaries. OSU is paying $14.4mil. That is strictly coaches. Not mentioning the list of analysts and quality control guys. Gundy is the 17th highest paid coach in the country, which is a little high based on OSU probably being around the 20-25th best program in the country. But you always have to overpay to some extent to retain something you want. Again, im not a Gundy defender. I actually cant stand him. But hes done a good job at OSU. Couldve been better.

I’d say currently maybe Wisconsin and Iowa. The difference is those two programs have proven it doesn’t take 20 years for them to win the conference. It didn’t take Kirk Ferentz 13+ years to win his second conference title. It also didn’t take Brett Beleima that long either when he was at Wisconsin. In fact, he shared one and won two in a row. Still got fired as well.

At OSU though, it’s all about just making any bowl game. Because if you go 13+ years without winning the conference again you just blame everyone and everything except the HC. Even if everything is turning in your favor :man_shrugging:. This past season was the ultimate perfect example of that. Holding onto coaches you know shouldn’t be there in the first place.

I gave plenty of examples in a different forum of how Gundy has went away from hiring proven coaching and hired experiments. Which has caused him to fire more people recently than any of them moving on to future success. That’s not the mind of a coach that has any desperate aspirations of winning the conference. Name me another coach that’s returned 18+ starters three times and finished 3rd, 3rd, and 16th?

You originally said “how many coaches actually waste talent”. You mentioned Iowa. The most players they had drafted was in the span of 2010-212. Had 18 players drafted in 3 years. Iowa didnt win their Division and went 14-10 in the Conf during that span. Ferentz has won 2 Conf Titles since since 99’ and hasnt won it in the last 20 years. So referencing a HC who has done less with more talent…doesnt make much sense.

Ferentz proved it doesn’t take a total of 13+ years to get a second conference title. That was my point. He won the Big 10 twice in his first six seasons as the Iowa HC. The fact that his conference has gotten a lot harder means he probably won’t win it again. Gundy’s conference has gotten easier and he goes winless the very first year with no OU or Texas to face :man_shrugging:.

Ferentz has also only went winless in the conference once. His very first year as a HC at Iowa. Gundy is a tenured HC with 20 years experience and didn’t win a single conference game with a veteran team :man_shrugging:. That’s a huge difference. Iowa fired Ferentz son for him. OSU allowed Gundy to hold onto Dunn after the 2022 season when people wanted him gone. Guess who got fired eventually anyway?

Iowa has only had a higher recruiting rating than OSU four times since 2011. So if anything, I would say I’m being kind of generous when comparing us to Wisconsin. OSU has also played for a conference title just as many times as Wisconsin has. The difference is Wisconsin has won it twice. So I think OSU as a program is comparable or kind of in-between those two.

You said coaches don’t waste talent. You mentioned Ferentz & Iowa. I just showed you that according to the NFL, Ferentz most talented teams didn’t even win their division & he hasn’t won a Conf title in 20 years. Would you agree that he’s wasted talent & hasn’t won…….so he’s a bad example?

Then Ferentz would be doing the same thing that Gundy is doing. Finding ways to win less games with more talent. I just gave you an example where three times Gundy return 18+ starters the very next year and couldn’t even place second in the conference. Last year was the worse example by finishing dead last. That seems like a waste of talent, doesn’t it?

I also take into consideration for the longest time Gundy only had to contend with OU. It’s not like he was battling Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, or Wisconsin for that second place spot. In fact, most of the years Texas was in the conference the same time as Gundy they totally sucked. More often than not Texas wasn’t a factor to Gundy getting second place or worse. It was primarily OU, Baylor, and K State.

He will keep changing the narrative on you :joy:
He’s an idiot

Yeah I see that. These forums are great……when you can have a discussion/debate. But it only works when someone can admit when they’re wrong. This guy belongs on Facebook with my mother & her friends. Gundy isn’t in this particular discussion. Ferentz is. He knows he swung & missed……but won’t admit it. Too many people like that can kill a forum

Gundy?

I dont know what youre saying? The poster said “coaches dont waste talent” and mentioned Ferentz at Iowa. Thats ignorant

I’m agreeing with you. I think Gundy has a problem admitting when he’s wrong just like several on here. Dunn is a great example.

I dont pay enough attention to the post-game Gundy stuff to definitively have an opinion on that. I will say that he dang sure seems more interested in having a cute sound bite or being the center of attention as opposed to simply winning ballgames
