This will be the first meeting between the Cowboys and the Lions.
I don’t have a problem with this, especially right before Alabama. All the SEC schools have a “cake” school before their big games.
Clown show! Play a low-level D1 program over something like that.
Why? What value is there?
FCS: It’s basically a scrimmage. You play your bench. Low injury risk. Get everyone some work running the offense and defense.
D1: You probably have to play your guys at least three quarters for a game that doesn’t matter against better athletes. Higher injury risk, adding bigger and more frequent hits to player bodies. In the Big XII, we’re only likely to get our champion in most times anyway. It doesn’t move the needle to get into the playoff either way. No one cares if you best Savannah State by 70 or East Carolina by 30. I guess the fans would like it a little more, you’d sell a few more tickets, not have to pay the FCS school’s athletic budget.
Easier said than done. Those often require it be a home and home situation. I have no problem with it.
Yeah I honestly have no issue with this game, I understand the strength of schedule arguments but what better benchmark for that in a non-con than Bama, who we play that year? It gives Lindenwood the chance to play in a big-time atmosphere, and for some of those players and coaches it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. The school gets some great money too
Exactly. Bama does move the needle. If you beat them, that’s a statement to get in as a non-champ, especially if Bama does get in. Lindenwood isn’t going to cancel that out. You go 11-2 (losing the conference game), but you beat Bama, you have a legitimate claim to be an at large.
Name a game they played the bench playing a low-level opponent like this? I remember us barely beating Mizzou State, which had moved up from FCS only a few years earlier. How many guys played when we played South Dakota State? Central Arkansas? etc? For that matter how many 3rd stringers got game against Savannah State?
Plenty lower level D1 schools need $$$. Why we get 2 for 1 with Tulsa. Why not play Langston then, I’m sure they need the money, why help Lindenwood?
Lindenwood would come here for less than a lower level D1 school does. WHy do you care if Lindenwood gets the check as opposed to Langston? That seems like a complaint just to complain. I have no idea on the particulars of why Lindenwood and not Langston. I also dont see why it matters?
It’s also a big payday for Lindenwood. Playing teams like them does good for everyone. In a way it promotes the sport and makes more opportunity for kids to play beyond HS.
I guess Chad forgot to consult you on the right choices for non conf games LOL.
Against Savannah State? We emptied the bench like two or three times.
It’s true, I am looking at the box score of the game and at least on offense. We played every single eligible player that wasn’t a redshirt or injured. Every rostered RB and WR, all three QB’s threw, every TE blocked and I think every defensive player took snaps. Even kicker Bobby Stonebraker took over for Quinn sharp in 3rd qtr
Yeah I’m not a fan of these type of games, but I get the reason for it. For the bigger school, it’s usually an automatic W and let’s you empty the bench for some experience. For the smaller school, it’s a good paycheck that helps fund your athletic program.
I don’t even think it’s legal for us to play Langston, not in a game that counts. It would have to be like a true exhibition game. Langston is NAIA, they’re not even FCS.
Why not schedule South Bama or Central Michigan? At least if you beat them (Maybe ). It’s a better outlook on your schedule compared to some if you ever find yourself competing for a CFP spot. I figured since we can’t ever win the conference. Perhaps we should think outside the box more on this? Maybe if you pull an 11-1 by some chance and lose the conference title you still have an outside shot of getting one of those CFP spots at 11-2?
Hey champ,
No, no one cares if you beat CMU. They care if you lose, though. No upside.
Is it better to blow out Lindenwood? Or a CMU? What if CMU ends up winning their conference? Is that not considered a good W with upside? Remember, we’re not winning the conference here. We’re just hoping stuff happens and we can find a spot.
Hey champ,
They’re the same. There’s no world where that is going to make the difference to the playoff committee. 11-2 Oklahoma State vs. 9-3 Alabama and we best Lindenwood or we beat CMU. It does not matter. They’re going to give it to Alabama for their namesake and conference or they’re going to give it to us because we have some impressive victories like Oregon and maybe we beat the Big XII champion in the regular season. They’re not going to ever ever ever say, “guys, we have to leave blue blood, television ratings gold Alabama out because Oklahoma State beat MAC champion CMU”.
