Todd has championships and is proven. More successful. In high demand and it’s a business any more the last several years. I think he’s ready to be a head coach.
2018- 31st
2019- 7th
2020- 74th
2021- 73rd
That was his total defense rankings at Florida.
We haven’t since Wickline left. Any reason we would start now?
Feels like a known commodity or low risk, low reward hire. See Mason, Derek. I like that he has NFL experience since we are moving toward NFL model with player salaries, mics in helmets, etc.
I do not like that he is coming straight from NFL and therefore will not be bringing any transfer portal guys with him. I also worry that he is entering the last stages of his career and wonder how much gas is left in the tank.
My initial impression is that it is a B- hire.
Because the other proved it didn’t work. Going from the trenches out has always worked. No one can name a team that has great line work that is t successful and usually sustained success.
Agree. Moving around every 3/4 years is not a bad thing, by any stretch.
Was Monken fired from his last few jobs? There’s a difference.
This hire is more Gundy being Gundy. You don’t want me to hire an unknown from D2? Okay, how about an old retread who’s been fired from his last few jobs? How do you like me now?
I think this is a bad hire. I also think its a hire that signals Gundy going further away from recruiting HS kids. This is a move that screams hitting the portal. He has been relieved at his two highest profile gigs (UGA and Florida). Hes more of a 3-4 guy, which will be really hard to recruit to at OSU. This is a guy looking to get another paycheck.
Did anyone notice the Oklahomans Super 30 list over the weekend? OSU signed 3. Thats as bad an indictment on Gundy than anything. Kids went to Kansas, Tech, Mizzou, Boston College and so on.
Grantham ain’t Monken. Apples to oranges. Monken has championship rings.
I don’t know if this guy will be a good hire or not. But at least now if it fails, the university has the capability of cleaning house and moving on in the future. Something it clearly lacked this year.
This guy has a ton of EXPERIENCE, but has minimal SUCCESS. I don’t get this hire at all. He seems to be the anti-Nardo.
A mistake doesn’t make you an idiot. Did you become a Sooner fan all of a sudden?
Given RA and PokesReport “broke” this story, I fully expect when the news is announced it’ll be “Todd Graham.”
It certainly feels that way. Especially when you see that his NFL career seems to be circling the drain. I wonder if there were extenuating factors with the hire. Things like all the drama with Gundy’s contract making candidates run the other way from the job for just one example. Could be a lot of things though.
Hope he coaches from the sidelines instead in the booth.
OU has always sustained great line success and sent guys to the NFL consistently up until this season. We’ve literally had maybe three offensive lines since 2013 that weren’t below average. That’s about a 25% success rate up until this point.
If we’re going to claim we’re a top 20 program then we better start coaching and playing like one. Especially when it comes to the trenches. If you can own the trenches, you can own the conference.
Gundy has always talked about how “experience” matters. The issue is that he’ll stick with it even if it sucks donkey balls. I agree with aix though. At least if he screws this one up it gives even more of reason to go find our Kenny Dillingham.
OSU actually has 4 on The Oklahoman’s Top 25. However, this is the first time that I can remember that OSU didn’t sign at least 1 player ranked in the top 10. Venables has definitely made a point to sign OK kids while Riley was recruiting nationally.
Yeah, and he’s never stayed anywhere more than 3-4 years, which was my whole point. That’s a bad reason not to hire someone.
