Answering reader questions about the upcoming football season.

A lot of it depends on two things:

  1. The opposition talent
  2. Who surrounds him

I don’t think he’ll put up similar numbers in the Big 12. I do think he can get close to it though. Which brings us to #2. His success will also be predicated on how good the players around him are.

I think the Oregon game is going to give us a great indicator of how this team is at the beginning of the season. If we’re within a couple of touchdowns of Oregon I think they could be Big 12 title contenders (barring injury).

How quickly the OL gels and produces will ultimately seal his fate. I think his weapons will be good but if the OL struggles, forget about it.

Yeah the Oregon game will be a good early measuring stick. We’re currently a 17.5 underdog. I think one advantage OSU will have is that Oregon will travel across two time zones to play an early game. Not to mention last year’s complete destruction will be in the back of their minds. If they come out sluggish and OSU can pounce, it could be dog fight.

I include the OL in that as well. I’m not talking strictly about skilled position players.

“And so if I take a three-star quarterback, nobody get mad at me. Like that’s all I can say. We have a set of qualifications in a kind of a formula that we have to recruiting these guys.”

I believe the context of that quote was for quarterbacks. Even HCMG brought in some 4 stars and many made an impact, which would be nice for HCEM. Dez, Cheetah (Tyreek), Shettron, Daniels, Tylan, JW, Reed, X, Rachetti, wasn’t Lavey and Shaun Lewis, Cox, Lowe… know some are missing.

"Kyle: Man, from the hip, my top five are:

  1. QB
  2. RB
  3. WR
  4. DBs
  5. LB"

Here it is…
1. QB if he remains upright, he’s enough but even the backups looked decent.
2. DE I’ll take coaces word for this and they seem (with my O Brother Where Art Thou accent) bonafide!
3. WR passing game including TEs - anxious to see how Coach utilizes a 6’5" TE.
4. LB Looks like at least 6 solid options.
5. RB (have to see Hawkins break Big XII tackles and gain some additional yards. Seemed he was bottled up in Spring practices. The RB room sounds good, but is there one RB that has taken a snap at this level - Missouri on this one (Show Me). Almost put CBs at #5.

Drew would do well to play another season. The next draft is loaded with QB prospects. Plus two CFB seasons only? Get an insurance policy just in case, play three seasons of CFB, two at the highest level to have a better chance of becoming QB1 in the NFL. IMO!

Back of whose minds, there aren’t many players left from last season? :joy: Too soon, i.e. not a very good joke?

LOL! no worries. I meant the Oregon players. Having that utter beat down last year in the back of their minds could lead to taking us a bit too lightly.

I’d like to see what his NIL contract says. That would be a deciding factor for me if I were to consider the draft or not.

If I’m not mistaken Drew wasn’t a starter in HS? Backup mainly because he had only played ball a year or two ?? Was told of Drew by a friend of EM ?? Tells me EM knows what intangibles he’s looking for

Pretty sure his contract was for 2 years. That was the buzz when we came here, anyway. Of course, a top draft pick position and a big signing bonus will repay that contract termination fee pretty easily, I’m sure.

I know his contract was for 2 years and 7 mil if I’m not mistaken. I’m talking about the specifics of the contract. Like an injury, games missed, gambling, or any other specific issue in his contract that requires him to fulfill it for full payment.

I would consider all these based on what they say. If I were to go ahead and declare for the draft depending on where I might land in the draft order. For example, if I’m getting 7 mil guaranteed no matter what happens I’m pretty much set for life even if I do suffer an injury.

It I leave early, and say I’m only awarded 3.5 mil for my contract. Then I get injured and never make an NFL career. It might be better for me to wait and fulfill my contract based on who is in the draft, and what order in the draft I might land in.

Correct

Strange, isn’t it? Our previous HC played the QB position all through high school and college. However, couldn’t evaluate his quarterbacks good enough and tried running off the best QB he had in his entire HC career.

Here comes Eric Morris that played WR. However, he has a resume of evaluating quarterbacks nobody wanted and turning them into high NFL draft picks. Quite an anomaly if you ask me.

I’d imagine they just wouldn’t pay the second year if he went into the draft. If he balls out enough to be a first round pick that means we probably had a pretty good season so I’d be totally fine with letting him ride off into the sunset.

He seemed to be the only guy in the stadium who thought Alex Cate was a better QB than Weeden. :sob: :sob: :sob: I was literally YELLING at the TV, put in Weeden!!! I’m sure you were as well.

Yes I was. Watching us be down 21-7 against 3-win Colorado team in Stillwater while watching us predictably run Hunter and Toston through a brick wall because Alex Cate can’t hit the backside of a barn.

What was even more frustrating was watching Bedlam just a couple of weeks later. Seeing Zac try to play the entire game with a busted shoulder and losing 27-0. While Weeden rode the bench the entire game. Even though he proved he could move the offense just a couple of weeks earlier :man_shrugging:.

I doubt we would’ve won anyway, but we sure as hell didn’t have much hope when Gundy essentially tried to Alex Cate mode in Bedlam despite seeing it not work against Colorado :man_shrugging:. Thank God we have a coach that’s willing to think outside the box now.

Just to rebuke your “ story everyone knows the deal on Weeden. Also Gundy isn’t coach anymore. You love beating him in the ground when he took us way farther than we have ever been , but it was time for him to go. Gundy may not have been good with qbs, I give him credit for lots and lots of players he uncovered, so much the goons and Texas started watching the diamonds he got committed “ Now I had rather look to the future, you keep living in the past ? Or go pay Marshall

From 2005-2017 Gundy had six 10-win seasons, won the conference, made two NY6 bowls (winning one). We had on average about 2 players drafted per year.

from 2018-2025 Gundy has two 10-win seasons, never won the conference, made one NY6 bowl (won it). We had on average 1 player drafted per year.

We told you guys this for almost a decade and especially when NIL came about he would take us back to the latter Pat Jones years. It’s not about what you done in the past only. It’s about maintaining for the future as well.

Those types never give a lot of the credit to T. Boone. Without his dough Gumby goes down w/ a losing record.
