Sloppy passes, bad team play and scoring droughts only lead to losses. No leaders doesnt help.

Lutz has been much either.

I cant stand this position. No one thinks the coaches read PFB comments, and no one thinks they could do better.

Fans get to complain, thats all it is.

Or maybe you think this season, or hell OSU BB, is doing just fine.

We havent been relevant in 20 years, what’s there to be upset about???

I’m upset we aren’t better. We have been when we have some talent and an administration that cares.
I hear Lutz, I think he’s a decent coach but evidently these guys ddon’t learn. So many bad angle passes, losing your man on D It’s just a combination of things

  1. Stop running the exact same offensive system that results in very few open shots. Lutz is obviously running an offense that doesn’t fit the talents of his current roster. For example, Newman is easily our best 3 point shooter when he has an open look, but he typically has a defender draped all over him when he’s outside the 3 point line. Run some set plays designed to get him some open 3 point shots.
  2. The aggressive trapping help defense is also obviously not a fit for this roster. KState shot 52% from 3 because their shooters were WIDE open due to our defensive system. Same thing happened at TxTech - they made 4 three pointers in the first 5 minutes of the game (BTW, OSU only made 3 three pointers during the entire game).
  3. Lutz continually plays 2 to 3 players at the same time who can’t shoot at all from outside (Brantley, Davis, Suemnick and Jennings). Playing more than 1 of those players at the same time allows the defense to sag off of those players, thus eliminating any driving lanes to the basket.
  4. Play Dow more just for his outside shooting.

Oh yes, I think this season is going perfectly and I would rather OSU basketball just remain in the basement of the Big 12.

Real talk, the fans need to support this new coach. The OSU fan base always gets props for being so great, rowdy, etc., but the truth is we are incredibly overrated. We will clearly only support basketball when it’s doing well without realizing that our support could actually help the team do better. GIA is a shell of itself. I know football has something to do with it but the piss poor attitude of our fans has a lot to do with it, as well. This message board is a microcosm of that attitude and it’s frustrating. Complaining is one thing when a coach has proven that he can’t get the job done but going after a coach after less than one year with (let’s be honest) a stitched together squad full of players that shouldn’t be in the Big 12 is unreasonable and unfair.

I’m going to have another beer.

These are all incredibly fair points. I agree that a lot of what Lutz wants to do just isn’t sticking with these guys. And the wide opens 3s - I can’t tell if it’s just guys missing assignments or if they simply can’t execute the trap along with recovering in time.

I’ve said before that I think Dow, Avery, and Newman should be on the floor together more. They’re our only players that can consistently hit an open jumper, and Avery can at least create for himself.

I think he would like to do more with our bigs but they simply aren’t good enough.

That’s the point, Lutz had to scramble to just be able to fill a roster when he was hired late and most were already committed. Lutz hasn’t forgot how to coach, he’s made the tournament with the last 3 teams he’s had.
Winning brings in crowds and the crazy in GIA we just have had a long list of not winning since Eddy …. Give Lutz another year or two to bring in his guys for his system, you will see the rowdy when he starts winning

History tells us that Lutz can get a team to the dance in his first year so he is capable. However I think it is time to shorten the leash on our BB coaches. We’ve spent too many years giving failed coaches a “chance” to succeed and we have nothing but pain to show for it. I say give Lutz next year to show significance progress, that includes making the dance next year, otherwise cut him loose and move on to someone else unless there is a money issue with his contract.

I’m definitely not saying we need to get rid of Lutz.
What I am saying is he needs to make adjustments to his offensive and defensive sets. We’re over 20 games in and it’s obvious his sets aren’t working with this roster, especially when he has so many poor shooters on the floor at the same time.
Remember Underwood started 0-6 in conference play before he made some changes to his defense that resulted in the team making the NCAA tournament.

Holy crap I forgot about this. I do now remember him drastically changing the defense and then we turned it around.

We don’t have the same talent on this team but anecdotes like this at least give me an inkling of hope, foolish as it may be.

I can agree that Lutz is trying to run an offense and defense that they aren’t capable of running. Not the right talent for the system he likes the best. Here’s where he should change something different. With so many poor shooters I don’t know what he could run
