STILLWATER — Mike Gundy’s Cowboys lost again. Oklahoma State fell to Texas Tech in a 56-48 shootout on Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium. The Cowboys fell to 3-8 on the year and 0-8 in conference play. The most interesting thing Gundy discussed in his postgame news conference was his future. We have that covered here. But here are five more quotes from the Cowboys’ coach. 1. On OSU’s Third-Down Defensive Struggles You could point to the high snap or myriad special teams blunders, but where OSU consistently lost this game was on third down. Texas Tech converted on 64% of its third-down attempts on Saturday, going 14-for-22. For good measure, the Red Raiders also converted a pair of fourth downs among the eight occasions they were stopped on third. One of those fourth-down conversions was a 40-yard touchdown run. Poor third-down defense has been a consistent theme this season, as opponents have converted 46% of their third downs against OSU. “There’s times we didn’t get pressure,” Gundy said. “There’s times they hit throws. I would just be careful to really answer that until I look at the video. But most of the time that we have these conversations after games,…
Because I know Gundy comes here to get ideas and thoughts on what to do…
- Part ways with Nardo. There’s the old adage of “…if you have two QBs, you don’t have any QBs…”. Well, we have Nardo and Joe Bob Clements as “co-defensive coordinator.” Get rid of Nardo and do what you should’ve done two years ago and name Clements DC.
- Part ways with Paul Randolph. Virtually nothing has been said about this new hire after the season started, yet our beefy defensive line has consistently been dominated. Realizing we lost Oliver, but our pass rush has been nearly 100% dependent on a LB blitzing. Unimaginative and uninspiring. And Randolph is old. I doubt him as a recruiter.
- Part ways with Charlie Dickey. He LOOKS like a hard-nosed, old guard coach. Yet, he couldn’t take the most experienced o-line in OSU history and win the line of scrimmage. Get younger blood here. Someone that will recruit well in the portal.
- Let Ollie go. I know it’s not really Gundy’s call, but I wouldn’t try to persuade Gordon to hang around. Go be a pro or go get your bag at Ohio State or Alabama or anywhere else.
25 days ago Gundy says Smith isn’t ready. Now he says he’s only been practicing for a month. Gundy should just stop talking because he just sounds like he doesn’t know bleep. If that kid looked that good with only a month of practicing I’m very concerned about the other quarterbacks and the coaches that develop them. I can’t get over the fact they felt comfortable going with the senior citizen bum who can’t throw a football for as long as they did when this kid was sitting there. I’m sick of him thinking that young QBs can’t run the offense. Sometimes you just have to throw guys in and see what you have.
If you take an untalented coaching staff and throw in a head coach with no motivation then this is what you get. There is no way a staff performs like this with a head coach (that cares) looking over your shoulders. Gundy checked out recently. The recruiting, lack of development, game prep, in game adjustments, etc., all point to this. If everyone didn’t see Gundy’s “mental departure” then there would be a lot more people supporting him right now.
Ollie Gordon is going to the NFL next season…
