BTW, we may have to keep Nardo. According to ESPN, we’re only the 107th ranked defense in the country. That’s WAY better than my eyeballs have told me.
For 8 mil, I can get us to a bowl. Bet (as the kids say).
I’ve actually read Gundy going against Dunn as far as choosing a qb , so I don’t know where you get that
I guess you know where that 24 million is coming from to buy Gundy out ?
Everyone enjoy Gundy being back next year !! lol Smith will be the starting qb unless someone poaches him
I’ve read it too, but I took it to be message board fodder. I have no idea who decided who the starter would be, and I doubt most of the posters on this board don’t know either. They extrapolate based a statement here or there, or based on history of poor choices regardless of the OC. And they may be right, but I doubt they “know”. But if you watch the games, and particularly watch Gundy during the games, you do know that it ain’t Gundy calling the plays. That’s coming from someone else on the headset, that I can only assume is Dunn. And the playcalls themselves have been mostly crap. Thus, I don’t think Dunn is suddenly a good OC if Gundy isn’t micromanaging him.
As for the buyout, I’ve been very clear that I don’t think Gundy is going anywhere. But that’s a crappy reason to stay together, and it only prolongs the inevitable breakup. Ask yourself this question: If Gundy didn’t have a buyout, would you bring him back next year?
Probably would one more year provided he makes changes. Particularly Dickey, Nardo and move Dunn back to WR coach.
We can all biotch and moan in here but he’s coming back, we just better have portal money which I think he’s banking on that everyone has 15-20 million, no walk ons, and 105 players on scholarship
I agree. I do think Gundy is making the calls on who plays QB though.
Knowing the way Gundy picks Quarterbacks we can be assured that there’s a 90% chance the best QB won’t be on the field .
Someone explain why the portal is ‘so much more risk’ this year? I get the numbers game, but right now, every 1A school has 85 scholorship players and some number of usually 25-50 preferred walk-ons. With the new rule, every school will have 105 scholorships but no additional preferred walk-ons. So I guess if you’re not better than the average walk-on, then the portal will be a scary place full of walk-on caliber players, but if you’ve got even a breath of talent, every school in the country (including all the blue bloods, many whom will happily sacrifice a ‘walk-on’ for a talented transfer) now has 20 more spots. Phrase it like this: Is the 21st best walk-on (assuming the first 20 get scholly’s #86-#105) at Alabama really a potential starter at school like OSU? I say not usually. (If you think yes, then that’s just a recruiting indictment on Gundy and his staff.)
Even worse, over time, even the “walk-ons” that are maintained at the power schools this year, will eventually graduate out, and then you know those scholorships will be going to the upper echelon of recruiting. So in 5 years, every school will just be giving 105 scholorships to the best players they can get. And that will be terrible for OSU if we don’t seriously improve our recruiting levels.
Follow the math here:
Over the past several years, OSU has ranked about 50th nationally in recruiting. Sometimes a little better. Sometimes a little worse. But I don’t think I’m being unfair with that ranking. Every year, there are about 2600 new athletes that get scholorships for D1 football (130 schools x 20 schollys). At 50th rank, that would mean our average player is ranked about 1000th (50 x 20) in the country. Obviously not every player is #1000. But for every #300 we get (like Flores), we get a #1832 ‘diamond in the rough’ type recruit. Again, not rocket science math. Now, every school will gain 20 scholarships (85 to 105). Which works out to roughly 4 additional recruits per year. So now, instead of getting the #1000-1020th best recruits (on average), we’ll be getting the #1200-1224th best recruits. That’s a significant talent decline.
You get rid of Gundy and the entire coaching staff is also unemployed unless the new HC wants to retain someone.
I think when revenue sharing starts what I understand is everyone has 15-20 million to work with. After this fiasco of outrageous millions for some players I don’t know how they regulate it. Instead of 100 dollar hand shakes you’ll get 5k shakes
