The Top 5 Quotes from Mike Gundy's Pre-West Virginia News Conference

‘[Bowman’s] play in this game was much better than his play against Utah.’

I must have watched a different QB than Gundy, the one Gundy said did good except for 4-5 glaring plays.

Weeden would struggle with these offensive calls. It’s just highly predictable and teams have made adjustments to stop us and we just keep doing the same things with minimal changes. Not sure how much they can change at this point. Had a whole off-season to prepare for a big year and I think they thought they could just “rest on their laurels” so to speak. Ain’t working.

We’ll ride out this season, hit the portal heavy, and at least have a new OC, and hopefully a new DC.
Gundy does not like change, but it’s time.

Maybe I’m being too cirtical here but the lackadaisical nature of these pressers are really starting to bother me. Give me some fire - especially coming out of a loss. I’m not asking for the game plan here, but give me an ounce of faith that y’all are going to come out fighting on Saturday.

Also, the fact that six minutes of the presser was about the SEC/B10 conversation is sickening. We’ve been embarrassed in back-to-back winnable games and we’re talking about something completely unrelated to the season? Get out of here. Can we focus up on the here and now?

Hope so. Not fully sure the defense is as bad of an issue as it seems or if they’ve just been asked to do too much by the offense consistent ineffectiveness. I mean they were on the field 3/4th of the game against Utah cause the offense was 3 and out on repeat. Just saying I don’t feel as strongly about the defensive inefficiencies.

Completely agree. Showing emotion in a press conference has little to do with winning or losing but Coach Gundy’s very comfortable in his job. And that shows in his conduct. He knows he’s a made man. Only the special one’s can avoid complacency with a bunch of money in the bank and little threat of getting fired.

“ is that there needs to be a culture where we look and see no matter what we look to improve — even if we win — for the next game. I think that is what we have here, and that is all we accept here”

No, that’s not what he has. What he has is a bunch of offensive coaches getting top 15 pay in the country to deliver a turd sandwich every game. When you return almost your entire team, and look like you get worse every week, then it’s obvious you’re accepting mediocrity or worse.

You heard the man State, “nothing bothers me”.
If I made $8 million a year I too could care less about wins and losses.

“I think there is a lot of truth to that, and in the back of their mind, ‘We went through this last year, and we’re good.’ Whatever it takes them to get them to that point, I’m good. I just need them to get to that point.” Can’t believe he actually said that. They shouldn’t be going through anything, they should be getting coaching that will give them a chance to win games. They’re not getting that, and it’s on you, coach.

‘[Bowman’s] play in this game was much better than his play against Utah.’ — That’s not saying a whole lot. Mike probably needs to get Lasik…

7 mill + 1.5 mill annual retaining bonus. I’ll take that extra 500k.

What player with any talent wants to transfer to Stilly after watching this?

Maybe an academic failure, 3rd rate QB or disciplinary problem child?

Nothings going to change in the off season…

nobody is asking the man the tough questions in these pressers though either. we all get upset that there’s no fire or emotion, but of course there’s not, because nobody is challenging him with the questions we all want the answers to.

Agree. Stillwater is a small, insulated ecosystem and it’s so small that Gundy can basically pick and choose who is allowed to ask him questions. The a** kissing amongst local media (I know PFB gets shut out from time to time so I’m not blaming you all) is insane.

It’s to the point where on Pokes Report (go figure this was a Robert Allen article) I happened to notice a semi critical header on an article after the game Saturday that within an hour had been changed to something about “Gundy coming in early to work on game plans”. Only way to get into the building is to kiss the hand so no one ever holds the program to any standard above where we’re already at.

Nothing is going to change in Stillwater hell Gunnar is killing it in Emporia and Gundy wouldn’t play him. What is he going to do next year for QB Flores will be long gone.

I didn’t see much improvement from the non-Conference wins, which led to the Utah loss. And I didn’t see any improvement from the Utah loss in the KSU loss. Maybe game 6 will be the game where the coaches improve.

Been saying this since Dunn took over. His numbers are ‘acceptable’ if he’s got a mobile QB to run that system and to bail out the moron calls (like the back-to-back QB draws). But I don’t think any of the QBs on the roster are capable of elevating an offense that runs 75% RPO, and who’s offensive playcalls are 100% dictatable by the defense. Gundy talked in the post-game about the fact the safety came charging the box. Well, duh. If you charge the box, then you know what the play will be. It will either be a futile run right at that safety, or it will be a pass to the outside receiver who will either run a slant if the DB has outside leverage or a fade if the db has inside leverage. The slant is hard against press coverage, and the defense knows when its coming, and the fade, while harder to stop coverage wise, is a low percentage completion by NFL caliber QBs, much less average college guys. The RPO is no longer a viable stand-alone offensive system. Its a gimmick that can be run 3 or 4 times a game and be successful, but against teams with a pulse., it will be eaten alive (as we’ve seen with KSU and Utah). Its like trying to base your whole offense off Jet Sweeps and reverses. If an OC did that, they would be laughed out of the building. We need creativeness in our calling, and a WHOLE LOT more downhill (power) running.

The defense gave up 250 yards to Utah, and gave up 8 yards/carry against KSU (for 300 total?) I get that the offense has been putrid and provided zero help, and the defense has made some nice plays in spots. But eventually, you are who the stats say you are, and the stats do not reflect a good defense.

They aren’t going to because Gundy will do his best to ban them. That way he can’t have anyone suggest he’s wrong and delusional.
