Daniels, and now Roberson, to OU. In a sadistic way, this makes me smile.
Should be a good pickup !! Wonder why he left since. Rialo (sp) is just a sophomore. Maybe of enough bslls to go around
Dave Aranda won the 2021 CC. He won coach of the year amongst many other coaching awards. He was the hot coordinator. He also sports a 31-30 record and 1-2 in bowl games, two losing seasons following his B12 CC win. Yet, as a young coach with early success, he hasn’t been able to turn in top 25 recruiting classes. Is this the type of hire you’d prefer? I mean, he has a CC win which seems to be a key criteria for you…….
One thing I would look at is what he’s doing in the portal. Also, if you ever pay attention to Baylor fans they were ready to fire him last season. Even Baylor fans won’t tolerate losing, and they lost a bunch of games for a long time for the first 15 years they were in the Big 12.
Baylor fans have also enjoyed three conference titles within a decade. OSU fans keep making excuses why Gundy can’t do that. Is that the position you want to keep taking? Making excuses for failure, even when you hold an advantage?
I also have more data on Gundy than I do Aranda. Gundy has completed 20 years. I know exactly what I’m getting from him. It’s pretty much bowl eligibility, be content with that, and don’t ask for much more. Aranda has just completed his fifth season. There’s no telling what much more he might do if he stays for 15+ years at Baylor. If had to guess, probably more conference titles than Gundy will ever get.
This is literally a debate whereby a corvette driver is complaining about not having a Porsche, while being laughed at by a mustang driver. The reality is, there are no guarantees that you’re going to be happy with a Gundy replacement. Cool. Fight for it. Pay for it. Then take the 50/50 odds that you’re not in the same boat three years from now, either due to failure or success.
It’s more like a Toyota Corolla driver not having a Mustang, and not even asking for a Porsche.
Toyota Corolla- Bowl Game
Mustang- Conference Titles (plural)
Porsche- CFP win
A Toyota Corolla is a nice, dependable, and reliable vehicle consistently. However, it’ll never morph into a Mustang because it is what it is. Nothing more, and nothing less really. The only way it changes is when the driver finally gets the guts to actually trade up and see what happens.
How do you know three years from now we’ll be at that 6 win mark for each year? Exactly how many years in a row do you want to go to the 6 win mark without any real significant accomplishments before deciding the program should be past that point?
I’ll take the over on 6 wins based on Gundy’s track record to date vs the doom and gloom of more .500 or less seasons, therefore he needs to be fired attitude. As for the car analogy, I think the nation’s top 10 winningest active coach equals a corvette vs a Toyota. Nice try, though.
You basically are saying you don’t care if the program improves past that point? Are you 80 years old or something?
Or he’s got a lot of miles on him and needs to finally be replaced.
29 players from the portal so far. Wonder where we will end up at ?
Who do you hire to replace him? Who would come and stay at Stillwater and win?
I’d replace him with a young coach in his 30’s. Not continue to hire and recruit like it’s 2006. Your question about a coach staying needs more specification. Why do you need a coach that stays in Stillwater for 20 years just to make ANY bowl game?
Tell me how that’s making OSU football better for the future right now? There are plenty of coaches out there that could stay here 4-5 years and get you to a bowl game during their entire stint. Even if Gundy stays for 30 years you’re still going to end up getting a coach that won’t stay that long. Because we aren’t taking those next steps with the program.
If you’re willing to pay a coach top 20 pay just to make a bowl game at OSU I’m sure there will be plenty of young great G5 coaches that would take up that offer, or even a great P4 assistant from a BB school.
Stay as in stay long enough to win more than we have. And do you have a specific kind of coach in mind or one you can name? I am not disagreeing with you just picking your brain.
Yea….you go after a guy like a Ben Arbuckle. If he’s successful at OU after 3-4 years he won’t even be age 35 yet. He was at Washington State. You realize how tough it is to get guys at Washington State?
Go after a guy like Casey Woods from SMU that has recruiting contacts in the Texas region. A dude that’s a good offensive mind and was under Gus Malzahn. He’s 41 but has proven his worth so far.
Jon Sumrall is 42, and at Tulane has done a good job. He went 23-4 at Troy and won the Sunbelt twice. He’s 32-9 as a HC so far.
These type of guys are out there. You just have to be willing to go find them. You don’t think any of those guys would take top 20 pay for just making a bowl game at a P4 school? You need someone that understands the current CF environment and has more in realization with today’s generation. Especially if you’re a school that doesn’t have a massive NIL budget.
