On Rangel,
There’s nothing more to say: The season is lost (at best we win 2 more games) and it’s time for a change. If Gundy can’t or won’t make the necessary changes, then he needs to step down.
It looks like BYU had 49 plays on which someone could be tackled: 13 pass completions and 36 rushing attempts. Of those plays, our defensive line and linebackers accounted for 11 unassisted tackles; 14 tackles total.
I don’t know if this is damning or not.
I would say this: Kendall Daniels is a good player, but he’s probably not a linebacker. And I don’t know why we are getting manhandled on the defensive line. I know we have some beef and athleticism but it just seems like we are easy to block.
Proud of the fight and effort. Robertson seemed like he had 100 tackles. And I learned I can still stay up past midnight.
Loyal & true.
I don’t want to hear any more excuses for injuries. Even before this, injuries weren’t the main issue with this team. The coaching is absolutely inconsistent. It’s like Gundy actually tries when he doesn’t know what he has.
We started this season off doing the same stupid chit we started off doing last season. It shouldn’t take the middle of the season and a bye week to have the team and coaching staff prepared to play. I said last season I thought Rangel was the better of the three. He just hasn’t been able to get on the field. Sure, he needs improvement, but the offense actually runs better through him because he’s not slower than a turtle.
This still doesn’t change my opinion on Dunn and Dickey. It looked better last night, but it should’ve already been that way . I was trying to wait till the end of the season to give Nardo the benefit of the doubt. His defense has just gotten worse over time (stats show it).
Gundy seriously needs to clean house with AT LEAST three coaches after this season. This program will not get close to even being a conference favorite if he holds onto the current staff he has. I know he doesn’t like to continually hire coaches, but sometimes we all have to do things we don’t like to do. That or he can go ahead and retire.
He’s went from a 4-2-5, to a 3-3-5, and to linebacker this season. They keep forcing him to learn different things every season he’s been here .
Justin Wright played last night and had zero tackles, in fact our Lbs only had 5 tackles total. 4 of our top five tacklers were safeties
Being at the game I was struggling to have any hope we could actually win, which we should have. To me there seemed a real shift downward in the game when Rangel went down. Granted the BYU crowd was really loud (and pleasant I might add) but Bowman had trouble getting plays off on time, struggling with footwork, etc…. Things I expect a 7 year senior to be really good at. If Rangel could play I would think we could rip off a bunch of wins down the stretch, with Bowman, I just don’t think so.
Offense resurrected itself with Rangel, showing again that Gundy can’t evaluate QB talent. Injury riddled defense and inept defensive coordinator are the reasons for an obvious losing season. Halfway through the season and the tackling is still horrible. Trent Howland probably injured, so might have to burn Field’s redshirt. But who stays 5 years these days? We probably will see M. Smith as QB at some point. I knew Rangel would be injured at some point because he’s not big enough, so no surprise there. Valiant and surprisingly good effort except for defense.
Multiple assistant coaches need apply elsewhere. Nardo and Dunn at top of list. Jack Springfield might have made a big difference coming back from injury, good to see running lanes. Ollie, please hang it up to heal for NFL, not worth risking career ending injury on a team going nowhere.
I thought Bowman was playing with abandon last night. He wasn’t great but it seemed that he ran in the open more than usual. None of our QB’s seemed to be sliding at the end of runs to save themselves which shows effort/heart. The down side to all of this is that we are just about out of QB’s.
I don’t think Rangel is a better QB than Bowman. But he’s a better QB in Dunn’s craptacular, run the QB 10 times a game system. Even the play where Bowman was intercepted. Against Bowman, the linebackers, who have no fear of the QB run, drop back and make that a near impossible layer throw over the LB and in front of the safety. But if the QB is mobile, those LBs can’t drop back that deep or they’re giving up easy QB run yards and thus the throw from the QB to the middle crosser is much easier. Just another of the many examples of where the offensive coaching and playcalls completely fails to align to the team’s talents.
Results are damning. Nardo is probably nice guy, but he needs to go. New DL coach is not making hoped-for impact either.
My question is: did OSU change blocking schemes during the bye week? How could we have been so inept to begin the season and then last night run for 250+? I do realize that Rangel’s ability and his threat to run can open things up, but we still ran 20-94 in the second half without him.
What a waisted season.
Agreed.
Our blocking schemes didn’t change, at least not that I noticed. But we ran a TON more motion in this game vs. the prior games, which gave us several leverage advantages. For example, the long run by Ollie in the first quarter was all setup by the full O-line shift which gave us a 2 man advantage to the short side of the field that Ollie took advantage of. You also saw the ‘run’ by Pressley where he motioned into the flat and caught the backward swing pass at speed and turned the corner for a nice gain. BYU uses a lot of man defenses, and so effective motion allows you to dictate where the linebackers will be on a given play. Add in the threat of QB run, and suddenly their LBs weren’t able to just focus on Ollie going downhill into the butt of the center and our running game magically looks better. The question I have is why it took our craptacular coaching staff half a season and a bye week to make this adjustment.
All I can say is we played well enough to win on the road against a good team. Heart breaking to give up a winning drive with one minute to go.
Also bad that backfoot Bowman is back. I can’t stand that he hasn’t figured out how to properly step into the throw. I’m sure he thinks he has more feel for the throws but the results don’t actually back that up. Idiotic. I’m afraid next week we will be back to running and throwing into defenses that don’t respect the QB.
We will need some younger players to step up to get our lowered goal of 6 wins. Depth has always been a problem for us since we can’t recruit 4 and 5 stars.
And Bam—-no bowl invitation. Sad
I made it a point to watch the linebackers instead of the ball on about 15 plays last night and I was disappointed on all but maybe 1 play. One of our linebackers in particular looked lost out there. I haven’t had the chance to go back and watch the game but wondered if anybody else noticed this also or am I trippin. I don’t know what depth we have at backer, but they might want to reevaluate who they play in that position going forward. If our linebackers are doing what they are being taught to do then those coaches teaching that technique need to go ASAP.
OSU is now in sole possession of last place. Kansas won and Baylor put 59 on tech in their win.
