Bedlam Football: Alan Bowman Can Do Something Few OSU QBs Have

If I remember correctly:

  1. Corndog badly underthrew Wallace on the two point conversion.

  2. We still lost that game

I was using your logic. Lot go into wins but you always point out that gundy was on the side line. Even tho he has won more big 12 games then any active coach. So using your logic you cost us loses.

I remember knowless couldn’t stop ou at all. Guy puts up a record day vs a coach putting up a really bad day. Yea knowlees lost it. Its obvious that gundy made knowless understand and taught him how to coach defense.

This is all spot on. While they might not harp on it, HC Gundy, Clint Chelf (on OSU MAX), and most analysts comment on all of the following issues Backfoot exhibits.

Against a mediocre Cinci pass defense loading the box to stop Ollie, Backfoot still managed exactly a 50% pass percentage. He threw 17 completions and conversely threw 17 zero yardage passes, all while Cinci was ā€œloading the boxā€.

Backfoot has many many fundamental flaws, that obviously are not going to get coached out of him at this point. Let’s go through the list:

  • Phantom Flush - flushes out of clean sustained pockets no obvious reason other than taking too long
  • Crawfishs 10-15 yards backwards before lofting arching passes off his namesake Backfoot
  • Horrible on-the-move accuracy - Once flushed (often for no reason) his accuracy plummets.
  • Deep balls - high inconsistent. Some are beautiful dimes, most are simply uncatchable
  • Short/Intermediate accuracy - Rarely throws his receivers pre-break or in-stride. More backyard pitch and catch.
  • Zero run threat beyond diving forward. Refuses to take a hit for a first down or additional yards.

Any time a QB has clean pockets, a Heisman quality RB taking all the D focus, and he’s still only throwing for 50%, that’s average at best QB play.

Neither Gunnar nor Rangel had any of these issues. Both would stand in the pocket and tack drive passes, took very few ā€œriskyā€ passes, and can run for a 1st down when the opportunity presents. Both are accurate when flushed, yet don’t flush unless necessary - good pocket presence. Essentially they both have exhibited better QB fundamentals, better passing and better in-game performance than Backfoot.

If Ollie were to take a twisted ankle, sprained thumb, or bruise thigh it’s really difficult to see Backfoot playing well enough to keep up with OU’s scoring.

I would hope he could considering he’s the second longest tenured coach in the conference. Matt Campbell is second, and he didn’t start until 2016. Can you come up with something better?

If that’s the case how come we haven’t been very good on defense the last two seasons? In the meantime, Knowles has take a defense that ranked 39th two years ago and has them currently at 4th.

Well he did the same with us. Again another repeat deal with you. Its call players. Is he stopping Michigan this year. We got 2 starters out. They are improving new dc alot of new players. At least this coach is cover the whole field. I would rather a guy get beat one on one you can fix that easy enough.

Which is strange considering Backfoot is a 6th year player. You would’ve thought someone at Tech or Michigan would’ve told him flushing yourself 15 yards into the backfield is going to result in either a possible sack, interception, fumble, or incompletion you can’t recover from.

The goal is to get near the first down marker and eventually past it. Not run away from it and try to get closer for an eventual punt. It also forces his receivers to have to come back to him as well which results in them sometimes having to abandon their routes.

Crawfishing 15 yards to throw off your back foot or phantom flushing to prove how inakrut you are on the move isn’t something a QB coach misses. He’s doing this in spite of the coaching. Hell, Gundy even calls him out in the post-game interviews.

I have this gnawing in the pit of my stomach that Venables is going to scheme Backfoot and disrupt his game. Hell, Bowman does it to himself already. I have no reason to believe Backfoot will improve his 50% completion percentage against OU’s D.

I’m praying that Bowman has a transformational epiphany and cleans it all up before kick-off. Or that Ollie can take control of the game in the 1st quarter.

Ok i was watch locked on tech. The were rising gudy. I said come on guys you know you want gundy. Gave me a like and post no chit. Go look it up . Just another one of these podcast that love gundy.

We are? Is that why we’re one of the worst defenses in the country at giving up 20+ yards per play?

Which puts our Defense dead middle of the Big 12 vs Conference opponents in Points Allowed and Long Scrimmage Plays Allowed, and 3rd Stops.
Our Defense is also tops in Conference on 4th Down Stops and 3rd behind OU and UT in TFLs.

I don’t think anyone was naive enough to think Nardo’s new 3-3-5 would magically install itself in 9 months.

National Stats are good sports bar chatter, but come across as ā€œcherry picking the uglyā€ to ā€œwinā€ arguments. Since we won’t don’t have any more Non-Conf games, why not look at relevant stats? Relevant as in comparative with teams we have and will actually play?

I’m not trying to give Nardo any hate being that he’s a first year coordinator and all. I’m just stating the obvious. We’re susceptible to giving up big plays. It’s happened in almost every single game. That’s what OU excels at as well. Korie Black is about to get picked on a lot in this game.

You picked the worst ā€œstatā€ you could find when in reality OU and OState suck almost identically at giving up the big plays. But hey, lobbing out the ā€œworst in the nationā€ is much more evocative. LOL

Serious trouble you say. Well IMO if UO stops Ollie then our goose is cooked plain and simple.

OU tried this against Texas and did in fact get picked last year. So let’s not.

There are some things this defense is good at, but defending big passes is not one of them. We’ve given up 7 touchdowns on passes of 30+ yards over the last three games. I didn’t say we were the worst in the nation. I said we’re ONE OF THE WORST.

Now as far as OU giving up big plays. I’m fairly confident that Backfoot probably isn’t going to beat them deep too often with his deep baseball style throw that tends to flail in the air for 10 minutes. I’m DEFINITELY not worried about him beating OU’s defense with his feet like Bean was able to do either. You might be able to do that against athletes at Cincinnati. That’s not going to happen against OU.

I hope the Pokes blow them out of the water. My main concern is that Backfoot, and possibly to a certain extent Gundy will cost us this game.

I’m with you. If Ollie gets held to 150 yds, then would be pleasantly surprised if Backfoot can pull the win for us.

This aged well.

I knew he gave us the best chance to win. I said it in fact. I didn’t think we would win, still but we DEFINITELY would not have won with Gundy or Rangel. It’s very simple. He gives us the best chance to win games and we are only 5-1 with him as full time starter.

So I’ll say it again cuz im in a petty mood. I KNEW HE GAVE US THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN.

Lot of blah blah blah on this one but the fact remains he is and will continue to be our best option at QB and we are 5-1 and tied for first in the conference whether you like it or not. So deal with it, accept that gundy and Rangel aren’t the options and enjoy the rest of the season.

Like I said, petty mode activated and I said it before and I’ll say it again, black foot or bumble foot or Beelzebub foot, or whatever you call him gave us the best chance to win and will remain so. Oh and slow foot also had a 13 yard touchdown run while throwing for 334 yards on 66 percent passing.

Pretty nice little Saturday. GO POKES
