Brent Venables' Shares his Thoughts on Bedlam: 'I'd Love to Play the Game'

I agree 100% with most of what you said. Zero argument here. I have never said W-L dont matter. Of course they do. The poster I was responding to says that playing Bedlam has ZERO effect on OSU whatsoever. Thats absolutely false.

Easy on just assuming OSU would have “several” Conf titles and NY6 games. There is a lot of meat left on that bone. There will be no OU/TX on the schedule going fwd…so lets see how many Conf titles the Cowboys start to rack up. I think both OU and OSU are going to find that the future for each of them is going to be a little bumpier than what the fanbases realize.

I’m not sure we will start racking them up, but I’m hoping the road gets a bit easier. Especially if the transition from Gundy (whenever that is) goes smoothly. If he does stay 8-10 more years, he d#mn well better have something good to show for it without OU and Texas in the way.

When I said “racking them up” I was referring to 2010-2020 time frame. I should’ve clarified. My fault. Good discussion.

@travis5266 The road changes, IMO. Easier? Obviously there are no traditional bluebloods like OU coming in. I get that. I can get on board with saying itll be easier. I think the Gundy window is 3-5 years, not 8-10. I think hes rubbed a lot of the fan base the wrong way and some within the OSU brass the same way, so if he doesnt win or play for a Conf title within the 3-5 years…I think he and OSU part ways in the classiest of classy ways.

As for the 2010-2020 OSU without OU hypothetical…fun rabbithole to go down. Of those 11 teams, there are 3 OSU teams that likely wouldve had their seasons changed. The Cowboys in 13’, 15’ & 16’ definitely would have had a chance. The 12’, 14’, 18’, & 19’ teams had no chance. The 10’ & 17’ teams wouldve had to beat a team they had already lost to. Interesting discussion.

Are you a Gundy guy or no?

Yes, and OSU is 2-4 in those as well. That does nothing to benefit the national perception of OSU. That has little to no effect. I’m not saying there isn’t accolades to being on Gameday. I’m telling you it’s not making as large as an impact you seem to think it does for OSU. In fact, in 2015 when we lost 58-23 on national television we had a ton of recruits decommit afterwards. As I’ve said before and I’ll say again. It has little to no effect on us trying to build our program. Travis is correct in his assessment. It’s been nothing but a roadblock for OSU to obtain the necessary requirements to building a champion program (conference titles and NY6 bowls).

That’s easy being said from a guy that’s been on the winning side of this game fifteen times out of the last eighteen games. It only benefits OU more and nothing for OSU at all. If it has such a large impact then a majority of OSU fans wouldn’t be fine with the game not being played any longer.

The 2018 had a chance. They lost 4 games under 7 points. We had a trouble defense because knowless chose to cover half the field. 4 plays we we would have been in a title game against a team we already beat. Its like tcu got 4 plays to do what they did last year.

Ok, recruits dont do commit/decommit based on a teams ability to win a game. No one commits to a school based on who won Bedlam in a given year. That is showing your inexperience with how recruiting works.

What you said was “OSU benefits nothing but a loss on the schedule”. Thats factually incorrect. Thats like trying to argue whether water is wet. Being in those games, is a benefit. Having them on your schedule is a benefit. Ive given you multiple examples. I never insinuated that OSU HAD to have Bedlam. They will be fine without it. But for you to be unwillling to acknowledge the benefits of being in that marquee game is a sign of ignorance, regardless of what team I root for. It benefits the Conf, each school and their Athletic Dept as a whole. Take that 2011 team. Do you think the Cowboys wouldve been thought of as highly as they were if they didnt have the opportunity to play Bedlam that year? Again, the answer to whether having an opportunity to play Bedlam benefits the Cowboys at all is unequivocally YES. I wont respond to it anymore.

I dont care what the majority of fans want. The majority of OU fans think the Sooners will win the SEC right outta the gate. A large amount of OSU fans think Gundy should be fired.

“The 2018 had a chance”

They went 3-6 in the league and finished 7-6 on the year. They lost to Tech and KState by a combined 43 points. If you are saying that team who finished 3-6 in the league had a chance…then hell all of em did during that span.

Lol i said the other 4 games were winable. You like your sister. 10 and 2 would allow for those 2 loses. Are you saying close games could not be fliped by a play

2 of their 3 Conf wins were by a combined 5pts. Seems par for your course to label 4 losses as near wins while completely skipping over the W’s that couldve gone the other way too. That bunch was much closer to going 1-8 in Conf than they were 8-1

I said what i said every knows there is a little luck in winning the big 12. When was the last nominate team 2009.
Nothing like the big 8 when Nebraska and Oklahoma ran the conference. Teams had 30 or 40 year losing streaks. Lose by 30
But go with you deal its fine

Agree on needing a little luck to win any title. However, Id say a 3-6 team needed more than a “little” luck.

Yes yes how many close or bad coached games did tcu when last year i count 4

@robert28 There was a team last year who went 3-6 in the Big 12 Conf. They also lost 4 games by 7pts, 3pts, 3pts & 3pts. It was OU. Would you say they were close to winning the Conf like the 2018 Cowboys?

Yes or at least change the the outcome. Ksu lost to isu texas would been on title game. This league is so close 1 game makes a difference. Not like years ago

Well I’ll give you credit in the fact that you kept this discussion civil. I disagree and think it’s a massive, massive stretch to say the 2018 Cowboys and 2022 Sooners had a chance to win the Conf title. Agree to disagree.

That is is fine stop talking to me.

Gundy’s era can be split this way.

2005-2016 Pro-Gundy
2017-present Anti-Gundy Bedlam 2017 was my last straw. To put up 52 at home with a Big 12 title on the line and lose by double digits….:rage::nauseated_face: I don’t care how good that OU team was…there were other less talented defenses in conference that held OU under 52.

His antics have grown tiresome. His arrogance has as well. He thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room at times when he clearly isn’t. I’m ready for new blood at the very top and have been for years. I was in a tiny minority in this camp until last season. To lose by two scores to the worst OU team in 30 years was simply inexcusable. It makes me sick to think OU will probably come into Stillwater and win the final Bedlam for the foreseeaable future. When an in-state rivalry means more to the fan base, donors and alumni than it does to the HC, there’s a problem. His defeatist mentality has been a cancer in our locker room for far too long. I’ll shut up now. Cause I could write all day on this subject, but gotta head back to work.

Mike and Bob don’t have a problem with this.

This:point_up_2:t4::point_up_2:t4::point_up_2:t4::point_up_2:t4::point_up_2:t4::point_up_2:t4:. Obviously I’m an OU guy. But I loved Gundy early on. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Ummm……no, that’s factually true. 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 prove that.
