Daily Bullets (July 21): Chad Weiberg on Blue-Bloods

Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news. OSU Bullets • British Open update: Through three rounds, Alex Noren is T-15, Austin Eckroat is T-40, and Rickie Fowler is T-70 (TheOpen.com) • How OSU was able to hire Sean Snyder as another assistant on the football team (NewsOK) • Solid argument from Chad Weiberg on how a 12-team playoff would have impacted the view of OSU as a blue-blood program: Weiberg states that if there had been a 12-team playoff during the Gundy era, “we’re certain that there were four times when we would have been in, and we’re pretty sure of two other times. And that’s with OU and Texas in the league. “If you’re in the playoff five times, coming out of a league with OU and Texas in it, does that change the national perception of your brand? You certainly can make the case for it.” [TulsaWorld] • Where Mike Gundy stands on all the “lists” going into year 20 (PFB) Non-OSU Bullets • The 20 best disaster movies • The blame game (faith-based) The correct answer is November – college football and basketball, NBA and NFL: The US sports calendar.…

Chad is correct on us in the playoffs since Gundy has been here being in a conference with uo and Texas

Trouble is, we’re playing checkers while the playoff teams are playing chess.

But…….there wasn’t so we didn’t. If there was a 20 team playoff we would have been it more.

Blue bloods all have one thing in common. We don’t have it.

Throw up some more dough then. Hard to compete with unlimited money. We have never given money to football like the goons and be 2 billion in debt. Hopefully we get really competitive with NIL because that’s where a bunch of players are coming from
I doubt Jeff knows there is a budget

And now with the excuses. 18 years without NIL and now with NIL and recruiting is still the same.

That’s because you only look at stars jug. Stars from sportswriters that never see a kid, only what they hear. We have got some kids last year and this year if they all stay that are good kids/players
So add you telling me money to give doesn’t make a difference……… why don’t we get to see TCU and Baylor budget Mr win at all costs

You’re right, Stars don’t matter when your goal is the Texas bowl. Or when your recruiting ranking is in the 60’s.

Ahhh the “OU has no money” or is in debt. Explain to me like the moron I am, just how OU is effected by their alleged money trouble?

KState has done pretty well. Michigan State has made a playoff. TCU made a run. Clemson wasnt a big boy and made it to the next level. NIL just became a thing the last handful of years. I give you that having money/tradition/facilities and so on make it easier for some programs to make the jump to the next level. But I cant stand when fans say the things you do in using that as a hard ceiling. OSU/Gundy have to start further back than a place like OU/Bama/Ohio St and so on. But there are coaches and programs that do it without being a blueblood to start

“Stars from sportswriters that never see a kid, only what they hear”

This isnt 1990. Recruiting services/rankings are pretty accurate nowadays, and they certainly arent done by sportswriters. Bery Tramel and Jeni Carlson arent rating recruits. Neither is Paul Finebaum.

The other schools have nil too. A lot have more.

We had arguable the bset last 2 best lb. Cobb and martin what were the rated. Tomato slice ou gets rid of 4 stars every year. Your coach goes for low 3 stars. If recruiting is more accurate then none of this would happen.
How can a recruit have 30 school with many bigg teams be a 3 star. Sure majority. 5 stars fall

Just like every time, ill try this with you as long as you can keep it between the lines and on topic

I said its “pretty accurate nowadays”. Thats the truth. It isnt foolproof. But its a pretty good indication of what a player will be. They absolutely get some wrong, just like every other entitiy out there who is in the business of prognosticating what a player will be. MLB/NFL/NBA get it wrong all the time and those guys have for more information than the recruitnicks do. Its all a form of guesswork. “If recruiting is more accurate then none of this would happen” If recruiting was absolutely foolproof or a guarantee, it wouldnt happen. Thats not the case. You do your own evaluation and go from there.

Im guessing youre asking why does OU go after 4 stars or high 3’s? There are only 18 kids in the 25’ cycle that are 5 stars. There are around 250 that are rated 4 stars. There are 134 D-1 schools. Its simple math. There are only so many to go around. Just because OU takes four kids that are 3 stars in a class…that doesnt mean the recruiting rankings are flawed.

The pro sports are completely different. Nfl in theory has no room for replacements. Retirement trade and cut. The new 7 plus are competing for sport. College always have spots. Of course teams do weird stuff some coach have no say. No 1 pick makes mg go crazy.
Mlb has so many pics the dnt even go straight off numbers. 6’ 4" lp throwing 100 is a pick no matter if he throws strikes

This year ive looked at alot of guys and 247 compared to the composite are widely different then they use to be. There are just a lot of 4 stars running around the portal.

“Pro sports are completely different” In my opinion, no its not. Players are getting compensated to play. Free agency basically every year. NFL franchises have 20 people on staff who do nothing but evaluate draft prospects. They also have far more tape against far better talent at their disposal than the recruiting services do. The NFL guys miss ALL THE TIME on guys. So expecting the Recruiting Services or College staffs to not miss either…is a little unrealistic

Your first comment went off topic.
Hs kids dnt have to win their spot. Nfl keeps guys if they win or are close enough because of signing bonuses. Its still a competition. Still gm are sometimes worst to pick players. They also can go after guys they dnt need. Those tend to be a trade down the road. The both ate being paid now.

For how long before they fall flat on their arse ? Is it 1 year , 3 years before they have a losing streak. I’m tired of your crap that up isn’t paying money in some shape or form. You may think you’re the ultimate insider. I know more guys that pass you by a mile about uo football. You’ve been in it for almost 100 years. And this isn’t all Switzer days. I know big boosters to them And they aren’t shy about telling it

That’s total BS … you know that Kids get stars because they get picked for making all the camps they can. Coaches campaign their kids Get out with the sports writers see the all

@michael13 So please give me one name of a sportswriter or journalist that is giving stars or evaluations to formulate a star rating for HS players? Just one name. “ Coaches campaign their kids Get out with the sports writers see the all” Explain this sentence to me?

“Tired of your crap”…….what are you even talking about? Let’s stay on topic here. You mentioned OU being in debt. I asked you nicely to explain to me what the alleged money problem OU is in that has effected their athletic program negatively in any way?
