Thanks for stopping by - here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news.
I’ll be really disappointed in the administration if Gundy is fired mid-season. That’s not how you treat your winningest coach of all time and someone who’s given 30+ years to your university.
If that means we’re a little late to find a replacement and recruit, so be it. We’re entering into a program rebuild anyways, it’s not like we need to be in a hurry to make the playoff next season.
I would agree here. Lets take a proper approach and make the transition with the right people, in as positive fashion as possible and with as little disruption as possible as well. My only hope for next year is that we can pull it together enough so that we can give a little payback to the Ducks when they come visiting in 2026.
I think youre absolutely right. I just wonder how Gundy handles it, which I think will steer the direction in which this thing goes.
He needs to be treated with respect, but we also need to move on. It can be announced mid-season, but he should be allowed to finish the year.
I’ll go further and say I don’t think any coach should be fired midseason unless it’s a criminal or like a conduct issue or rules violation. There’s no reason for it. No upside to do that. You aren’t going to hire a replacement midseason.
I dont agree with that. You have no idea how much negative recruiting takes place when a guy is dead man walking. With the early signing period now, it speeds up your calendar. In a perfect world, I get what youre saying. Its much cleaner that way. But I think your best served for everybody if you cut bait when you realize its over. Now, I hope they dont do that to Gundy because of what hes meant to the program. Jobs open. Shuffling behind the scenes start. You better give yourself as much time as you can to find the right guy. The longer you wait, the more shallow the hiring pool gets.
I’m okay with it being announced mid-season or even him resigning mid-season as long as he isn’t “pushed out” before the season is over.
I think you’re right for 95% of programs.
I think for the blue bloods whose fan base expects playoffs every year, you have to move as fast as possible for recruiting, scheme install, etc.
Yeah, I get that, but how is an interim coach better? Wouldn’t the negative recruiting change from, “this coach is on the outs, you don’t even know who is going to be there next season,” to “this coach is gone, you don’t even know who is going to be there next season”? There’s no reason to think the interim guy will still be there. Unless you’re targeting someone who isn’t currently coaching, you’re not going to be able to even talk to your short list about the job until after you would have fired the guy anyway.
He won’t get offed during the season….unless we lose to TU and/or by another Big 12 team by a lot of points. Down the road we should be looking at a younger innovative coach like Gj Kinne of Texas State, but I bet we could also get a guy like Dan Mullen, cause we got more dough than UNLV.
I think they may tell him they’re going a different direction next year but let him ride this season out his way.
I think you’re overstating this a bit.
3 recent examples where midseason firings did allow the program to push the timeline up:
USC: Fires Helton, gets Lincoln Riley in before the bowl. He gets a massive jump which benefits him in the transfer portal.
LSU/Notre Dame: LSU poaches Brian Kelly before seasons end. He gets to Baton Rogue early AND Notre Dame was able to name Marcus Freeman as his successor before the bowl (which they lost to us, of course).
A&M: Fires Jimbo, poaches Elko from Duke before the bowl (which again, they lost to us)
Lose to Tulsa or get blown out by 3 or 4 big 12 teams and you won’t have to worry about recruiting. Gundy may have built this program but he totally destroyed it last year. This program is as far down as it was in 1991.
@ar1 You’ve been muted.
You said that like I should care.
All I’ll say is this: He has a different opinion than you. Don’t claim everyone hates him for it.
Regardless of season record, Gundy has to go before he does any more damage to what he’s built. I have a bad feeling that with a few more bad losses, he’ll say a couple of things he shouldn’t in a presser.
You sound like a child bud. You sound like a young child that can’t deal with an opposing opinion. It’s your generation.
The difference between me and you, you thought everyone agrees with you. I don’t care if everyone agrees with me cause I know it just my opinion.
