And where were we ranked in the final rankings in 2018. Apples and oranges.
OK, so… the budget jumped over 100% in 2018. So, where were we in spending in all of the years and recruiting classes leading up to 2018? It’s not a lightswitch.
So you’re saying that this is the main reason Gundy can’t win the conference? How much were we spending in 2011?
I’m for spending money on the football program but I think we should get something for the money spent besides being put on a list of wins and getting zero conference titles. If Baylor can win 3 in less than 10 years and we can’t win 2 in 20 years, we ain’t getting our money’s worth. Name another coach who is paid top ten and would still have a job with 1 conference title in 17 years?
Find me someone who has done that with Gundy’s athletic budget. K-State has with Snyder, but Snyder is widely considered one of the greatest football coaches to ever pick up a clipboard, so yeah, if you’re an all-time top ten coach, it’s possible, but those guys aren’t sitting around waiting to be found.
Gary Patterson has recently been in the top ten, so has Kirk Firentz, and Dan Mullen. Patterson won mid major conference titles, but he also had a giant athletic budget. Firenze won a couple back in the early ots. Mullen got paid without doing anything.
What happened to Patterson? Mullen gets how long to to win the conference? How long after that? 11 years? 12 years? How many could go 5 years without even making the championship game?
BTW Bill Snyder never made 4 million a year.
When was Gundy a top paid coach?
OK, I couldn’t find a complete breakdown, but for the 2011 season we were outspending everyone in the top 25 except for Alabama and Ohio State:
So, there you go… 3rd place spending, 3rd place in the final AP. In between that time and 2018, we apparently fell behind Iowa State at least in recruitment spending. That 2011 budget is low by current standards as it’s the entire football budget, not just recruiting. Also, we were catching up to other programs at the time, spending on facilities to get us on their level, so we’re spending to have what top teams already had for years. Gundy outperforms his resources. He’s not a wizard like Snyder, but he does exceedingly well with what he gets unlike a Texas that pisses their resources away for no result.
Edit: Also note, it’s 1 and 2 and then a biiiig drop to us at 3. Then almost everyone else is comparable within $2-$3 million, so it’s not like we were blowing people out. We were keeping up plus a little bit extra.
The top dogs are spending 10x that now. TV money, etc. It’s easy to see how we fell behind.
This is the greatest, most irrefutable defense Gundy has ever received. We finished 7th this year and our total spending doesn’t even chart in the top 25. We have an amazing coach.
I think I get what you are saying. As soon as we spend over 2 million on football recruiting, Gundy might be able to win his second conference title.
No, I’m saying you can’t give a guy a butter knife and tell him to slay a dragon.
I truly hope they give him 2 million cause I still don’t think he could win.
OK, well, that just shows your attitude. You hate the guy and want to put all the blame on him despite being shown in black and white that he has financial limitations. For what he has to work with, he’s thrived. He’s found ways to maximize his resources. There are other coaches that achieve without superior resources and some who don’t achieve with superior resources, but I don’t see how you can knock a guy for winning with less.
It’s a shame he had to threaten to leave twice and we still don’t have great funding.
I’ve been trying to tell y’all, both AR and Joe have a PERSONAL issue with Gundy. All they literally asked for this time last year was a CCG appearance, guess what ?? They got it it, but since it’s personal they have to try and double down and try to make it look like he’s the worst coach in power 5. They are buffoons man.
This 100%. The thing is, it wasn’t even surprising. You knew they’d move the goalposts before acknowledging they were wrong.
damnnn… you AR the greatest hater on this free forum
Yet still 1 in 17 seasons.
The defeated cry of a defeated man. You got so owned this whole conversation.
Yet with another 140% increase He still won’t be able to win the conference.
"We need more money " "We need more money "
If I’m not mistaken this is our first top 10 finish since 2011. Why are you guys just focusing on one year?
A truly amazing coach that’s fine with running the ball in for the win, with a broken line, and 3rd string running back (Who had 18 rushes for 30 yards before the run) in the biggest game of his career in 10 years.
