Early Big 12 Exit by OU, Texas Seems Dead; League Discussing Potential Gonzaga Addition

@travis5266 I know the prevailing sentiment since they announced they were leaving has been very negative by OSU fans. Honest question. If OU/TX stay through the contract and fulfill their obligations of said contract……would you still feel animosity/ill towards those two for leaving?

Unlike most OSU fans, I feel no animosity towards them for leaving. I’m not even angry at them for the way they did it. I simply want them gone. Here’s how I look at it: Texas doesn’t matter. Our history with them doesn’t matter. With OU, it does. Here’s what I mean: OU owns us in football, which is the main sport that gets the most attention, the most dollars and can craft the most dominant narrative. Yes, OSU owns OU in several other sports, none of which matter in the power structure. They just don’t. So, continuing to kick OU’s assss in wrestling, golf….is not worth the cost of continuing to get our asssses kicked in football. I won’t feel any differently if OUTexas leaves after 23 or 24. I want them out as soon as possible. I wouldn’t feel differently if OUTexas stayed through the whole contract. At this point, It does no one any good whatsoever for the two in-state schools to continue to compete against each other.

I understand why the conference and the TV networks want their full amount of money, but I disagree with it. I care about what’s best for Oklahoma State first and foremost. Not the other teams, not the networks.

I could keep rambling, but I won’t. Haha!

@travis5266 First off, that’s very well said. A solid, honest take & it’s much appreciated. Appreciate the convo.

I agree with 99% of your post. But when you say “what’s best for Oklahoma St” ……wouldn’t continuing to play Bedlam be what’s best for them? The reason I ask is simply because of this: losing Bedlam doesn’t hurt OSU much at all. The national perception tends to be that OU should/will win Bedlam anyway. Now, that’s not my take on it. OSU is a quality program that can beat OU any given year. This isn’t my Dads version of Bedlam. But losing a game that you’re “supposed” to lose doesn’t affect the program in Stillwater. Winning it though has tons of benefits both on the field & off.

@KetchupSicle Thank you, sir for the compliments. I try to be level headed most of the time and have actual conversation. You seem like one of the good one’s too.

How many more Big 12 titles and NY6 bowl appearances would OSU have if OU were not on the schedule from…say 2010-2020? Without researching, I count at least 3 or 4. 9 times out of 10, at the end of November, OU is the one team in the way of all of our goals. Take them away, and Gundy’s tenure is exponentially greater. TV money/ ticket sales are irrelevant to me. Increased donor giving isn’t happening without championships. The boost in recruiting by beating OU 2 out of 10 years means nothing. Win championships and everything else takes care of itself.

@travis5266 I completely agree with that. I guess I’m just looking at a macro instead of micro as it pertains to Bedlam. I look at it more of what it does from a winning Bedlam standpoint as opposed to losing it. But you’re right.

Losing does more bad than winning does good. When OU loses, it’s a rare, temporary embarrassment. When OSU loses, it rips the guts out of the fan base and is more evidence of being a second-rate program who will never ever win the biggest prizes. I’m being over dramatic, but you see the point: OU has dominated it in football and the quicker the series ends, the better. On another note: What’s happened to the team that smoked Bama in the LNC? Y’all fallen apart?

@travis5266 We’re not very good. The least athletic basketball team to come through Norman since Capels last year. The Bama win had more to do with Bama’s apathy than anything else. I like Porter Moser & think he’s a good coach……but you gotta Win. I was in the building for OU-TX on NYE & the place was packed. They lost. Bedlam had the largest Lloyd Noble crowd I’ve seen since the early 90’s…….& they lost. The support for hoops is never very good & I think it’ll be awful the rest of the way. It’s a bad time to be bad when you’re trying to convince people to build you a new facility. OU hoops has a reputation of being a bad fan base, but it’s not that it’s “bad”. It’s just fair weather. When the teams are good (Hield, Trey Young, Blake Griffin) the fans show up. When they’re not……it’s a ghost town.

Skip the new basketball facility and use that money to pay the buyout from the Big 12 a year early. That SEC money will help soften the financial blow.

Personally, I don’t want any part of the SEC just yet. Let’s use another year to build the roster & let BV learn how to manage the clock.

You are in the minority. Two years ago, OU fans couldn’t wait to get out of town. Heck, as soon as Brent was hired, most still wanted out ASAP. One 6-7 later, OU is now saying they need time to get ready. It’s hypocritical on the part of the majority.

Let me clarify a bit. I’m all for the move to the SEC. The benefits are massive. As a fan, the games will be a major upgrade. I’m a huge baseball guy and I couldn’t be more excited what it’ll do for the program. Absolutely cannot wait.

Now……I’m fully aware of the negatives. The ceiling for the program will be higher…….but the floor will be lower. The 6-7 this year was an anomaly. I throw it out (unless it happens again this year). I think OU goes to the SEC and is a LSU/Tennessee type. It won’t have the sustained success that it’s had in the Big 12 and certainly won’t be what Bama & UGA currently are. But I think the people that say OU will be forever 7-6 or 8-5 are as ignorant as the people who think they’ll go over there and play for the Conf title every year.

I don’t know of a single OU fan who doesn’t want to go to the SEC. The debate comes about when they want that to happen. I don’t think it’s hypocrisy as much as it’s reality. OU’s roster after Riley left wasn’t ready for that league week in & week out. I believe BV will get it there as the guys he’s brought in with this full recruiting cycle appears to be much better up front. The next class in-state is loaded with bigtime DL guys & I expect him to get a few. Now as I’ve said……he’s gotta Win. Brent is great Feb-August. He’s not shown that he’s very good Sep-Dec.

Yeah, I wasn’t saying every OU fan doesn’t want to go. Just the timing difference is all, which you stated. My how times have changed. 2013-Trevor Knight plays the game of his life and beats Bama. “Haha! SEC is overrated. We don’t want to hear the excuse that Bama wasn’t up for the game.”
2023-Two years away from joining that “overrated” conference.

Money makes the rules.

Speaking of baseball, OU was really good last year. Is it going to be similar this year? I don’t pay attention to them in baseball as much as football or basketball. Who is OU’s coach?

Hopefully, OSU does better than getting beat at home in a regional like last year. Last year’s squad frustrated me. Josh got the new stadium that he needed. It’s time to win a Natty (but don’t think it’ll happen yet.)

In 2013, I think the argument could be made that the SEC as a whole was overrated. I’ve said all along that the 2014 offseason was the crossroads of Bob Stoops career. If Mayfield didn’t fall into his lap……OU was in trouble. I’ve said I think this upcoming season is the exact same thing for Gundy/OSU. The fanbase is divided. Program seems a little stale. The upcoming season seems to be on shaky ground roster wise. We shall see……

OU baseball is in great shape. Skip Johnson is the HC. He’s a pitching guru. The main Asst is Reggie Willits. He played HS ball in Ft Cobb, JUCO @Seminole, OU, then in the big leagues with the Angels. He most recently was the 1b coach for the Yankees. He’s a small-ball, baserunning genius. He’s dramatically overhauled the way OU plays offensively. As long as he stays (which I think he will because his oldest boy is a Sr in HS & his middle one is a Freshman in HS & both are BIGTIME players that are committed to OU) OU will be in great shape. They are breaking ground on massive upgrades to the dumpy park. I think OU is a Super Reg team with a chance to get to Omaha.

OSU has 2 studs in McClain & Riggio. But they are going to have trouble pitching this year. Anyone who knows me knows what a huge fan I am of Holliday & OSU baseball. But I think they are way overrated this year. Here’s a name for you guys to watch……Carson Benge. He’s a 2nd yr kid from Yukon. Sat out last yr with a UCL issue. He will be a 2-way guy this year & the heir apparent to 3b when Mclain is gone.

@travis5266 Ok, I literally just saw the OSU baseball post on here that’s got my man Benge first on the list. The quote by McLain is dead on! Benge is a different breed. He used to wear sweatpants under his gamers……in the summer. He’s an absolute different breed of cat. Was a late bloomer, but can absolutely rake. He played on a squad full of Oklahoma kids outta Enid that won the World Series in New Mexico right before enrolling at OSU. Ian Daugherty was on that bunch too. I’m an OU fan, but have numerous contacts/players within the OSU clubhouse. Love Cowboy baseball

I’m an OU guy and most all, and mean nearly 100%, have not felt like moving to the SEC right way was a a good idea or something they wanted. If you’re hearing that it’s because they simply don’t want another fan base to know they are not comfortable with the idea. We have our “Robert’s” in our fan base also, but most are rational lol.

@Watermelon We have arrogant, intolerable fans too. But you are absolutely right in that I’ve never come across one like the moron on here. Ever. And I saw two OU fans beat each other to a pulp in an Arrowhead urinal in 03’. I saw a guy drop a deuce in a custodian closet at the Orange Bowl in 01’ (00 season)……& NONE OF THEM WERE AS MORONIC AS HE IS
