Five Thoughts on Oklahoma State's Coordinator Hires

Thoughts on OSU hiring Doug Meacham and Todd Grantham.

Since we hired middling coordinators, any know if we’re paying them like middling coordinators and adding to the NIL kitty or are they getting “high performer” money like our prior middling (at best) coordinators were getting?

I wouldn’t sign Chandler Morris. I would go with who we have on the roster. If we sign Morris and he becomes the starting quarterback, I could see all 3 currently on the roster portal out. Whereas, if one of the 3 current QBs wins the job maybe only one portals out.

Totally agree.

If I’m bringing in a portal QB for this team, its a veteran backup only. This team is going to need help in the defensive front 7. That’s where we need to be working the portal. With young QB’s we need to be able to trust our defense until they get rolling.

These are aren’t just “unsexy,” they’re abysmal. They are just like Gundy–old and mediocre. Do any of these three–Gundy, Meachum, Grantham–inspire confidence? They are middling. Next year’s schedule is tougher than this year’s. It is quite possible that the Pokes only win 2 games next year. The BOR fumbled, Gundy is being purposely obtuse, and OSU has blown the best opportunity it has had in over 70 years to become a major player (well, maybe the second best opportunity after Gundy failed to capitalize on the 2011 season). I can’t imagine I’m the only fan who is more than disappointed. I can’t imagine that big time boosters are happy. I can’t imagine players are happy.

I can definitely see that argument, however we as fans have to realize there is another possibility - that the QBs on roster may just not be all that great. When you have a mediocre QB starting, the fans think that the best QB is always the one that isn’t playing. But logic demands that isn’t always the case. Extremely gifted QBs are rare, and I remind myself that these coaches see these guys in practice every day. I have not. And while I haven’t seen Flores play a snap yet, the other two guys haven’t made me jump out of my seat.

Completely agree. This was Gundy’s chance to start anew, hire some guys with up-to-date concepts and inspire some confidence in his leadership amongst the fans. Instead, it’s a middle finger to everyone from the fans to Shrum, Weiberg and the BOR. He fulfilled, in a technical sense, the requirements put forth in his new contract (P4 experience, etc.) but without the maximum effort required after an abysmal season.

I never figured Gundy for a slacker, but that’s what he’s become.

I think these hires are a sign of defiance from Gundy. “You unempolyed, poor complainers think Nardo and Dunn were too young and not good enough? Ok. Ill go the complete opposite”

I wonder when the first time will be that Gundy says as much in a soundbite.

I think Meacham is a decent hire. He doesnt have to really recruit HS kids as much nowadyas as he wouldve in the past. You can really just hit the waiver wire and pick up kids to fill your roster. Now, thats not a great way of doing business. I think Meacham is an ok hire. I think Grantham is a terrible one

100% this. I think Smith has real potential, but I can tell you that the other QBs on the roster are not all that. There is a reason why Rangel and Flores haven’t seen the field much in two years and it’s not just their injuries this season. Fans always think the backup QB is the second coming and as bad as QB play has been at OSU in a long time, I think there’s even more of that sentiment.

I don’t think Dumby and Meacham get along too well, which is why Doug left years ago.

Why are oSu fans so eager to want Chandler Morris in Stilly. The promise/future is NOT him, just like it wasn’t Bowman. 6 wins max next season either way.

How would we know when Dumby only goes w/ experience? In his infinite wisdom he put a 7th year guy who can’t run and throws off his back foot far too often, but let’s blame the young kids cause our HC sucks at QB1 picks. :joy: :sob:

I hope we don’t bring Morris in. Unfortunately, no matter who is playing QB next year wont be drastically better than the next. We have too much going out to replace. Let’s use the 2-3 we have and input Meacham’s up tempo offense. We have to (unfortunately) lower our expectations next year and make sure we set ourselves up for real growth in the future. Two things about a great up tempo offense: 1. It allows the speed of play to cover up some deficiencies on the OL 2. It will help us get some athletes on the recruiting trail and transfers.

Not going to get into a big debate here but I will say that some of Grantham’s defenses were far from middling so you can’t claim this as factual. If you bothered to do any research you would know that. Now as an opinion you’re free to have that and you may even be right in the end. We shall see.

“ Heck, North Carolina just hired a 72 year old.”

Belichick is a well-known figure across America. He’s coached Tom Brady and won super bowls. About the only thing any teenage kid knows about Gundy is he’s that “mullet guy” and that he just went 0-9 in his conference. If Gundy wants to hire old men he could’ve just went to the local nursing home.

Grantham has had top end talent when he was at Georgia, Mississippi State, and Florida. This team is does not have any high level talent. Quite frankly we’re devoid of pretty much any talent as almost all of it just graduated or hit the portal.

I kind of feel the same. Unless we’re joining Conference USA next season and have a chance at the CFP I’m not sure I see the point in bringing in a one year loaner for a 6-6 season given what our coaching staff and portal looks like as of now.

You’re right. He has a very checkered past as a DC and was eventually fired, and not even Saban would give him an actual coaching position in 2022. That’s the difference between a championship caliber HC compared to a bowl eligible HC.

These comments make me laugh. I think all of you have forgotten what OkState football was like pre-Gundy. I think Gundy’s earned the right to build the team how he sees fit. You all act as if OkState is some type of blue blood with significant donor cash to buy whatever coordinators or coach it wants.

Is this a troll post? I think Gundy’s done quite well with the QB position throughout his career, aside from 2024 Bowman.

He was bad before and after Brady.
