The only loser is the one that thinks great success is predicated on how many times you’ve been, and not how many times you’ve won .
You have to get there first
Gotta win the conference pretty much to get to the CFP .

What does 5 or 6 in wins do when you haven’t won the conference in 13 years while Baylor K State and Arizona State are winning? Are you willing to go 13 more years not winning the conference if he’s able to stay in the top 5 or 6?
Do we want to win the conference or not?
But, yet, here you are arguing and struggling with reading comprehension. I said Belichick, outside of his time with the best QB in NFL history, was a mediocrely successful coach. That is an undeniable fact. Wins/losses are quantifiable. I think UNC’s experiment with him will be an abysmal failure. I might be wrong, but I doubt it.
“He was a mediocre coach without Tom Brady.”
Saban was a great coach. Lombardi was a great coach. Bill Walsh was a great coach. Regardless of who their QB’s or situations were at the time. They won more games at some places than they did at others. Belichick didnt become a worse coach once Brady was gone. You said he was a mediocre coach without Brady. He obvioulsy didnt win as much. But that doesnt change what he did. You said he was a mediocre coach.
He was a mediocre coach without Brady. His record proves it. Repeating it over and over doesn’t help your argument. Bill Walsh won Super Bowls with different QBs and was moderately successful at Stanford. Lombardi is from such a different era, it’s really hard to judge his work outside of GB. Saban won national titles at two different schools (was mediocre in NFL). Belichick had one winning season without Tom Brady. He was not successful in Cleveland. Brady leaves NE and wins a Super Bowl. Bileichick got fired. It is obvious to anyone that can think that the primary reason for NE’s success was Tom Brady. Now, I will give Belichick credit for being a good GM and putting the right pieces together to win, but as a coach, his record was mediocre without Brady. Does that phrasing make you happier?
I dont think it will work either. But…you dont really have to go out and recruit HS kids. He can throw money at kids. Even though you stated he was a mediocre coach without Brady, hes absolutely shown a brilliant ability to identify talent and find hidden gems that can contribute. Im not sure if you have any care to hear how he/UNC approached the John Mateer story, but they are showing a willingness to try and compete NIL $$ wise. If he was hired pre-NIL, id say its got no chance. But if all he has to do is sit back and identify what players…he may have more success than you and I think. Chapel Hill is a beautiful place, is in a decent location recruiting wise. And he dang sure has name recognition, especially if Tom Brady is going to occasionally assist in talking to recruits
If you think a coach is merely what his record was in worst 10 years, while excluding the fact that the other 19 years was the most successful, dominant stretch in the history of the game…so be it. It is 100% fact that “his record was mediocre without Brady”. Its also fact that he was the GM and HC of the greatest dynasty in the history of the NFL. Tom Landry got fired. Shula got fired. It all ends at some point. If someone wants to say that Brady is more responsible for that run than anyone else, I wont argue that. “He was not successful in Cleveland”. NO S**T. Who the hell is?? Theyve made 4 playoff trips in the last 35 years…he was one of those. And you may not think hes a great coach, but this quote carries far more weight than yours or mine *It’s a great benefit for all those players that are going to that program, because they’re getting the best coach that this NFL has ever seen Tom Brady said that. I think ill take his opinion over yours
I think Belichick is more of a PR stunt than an actual coaching matter. UNC is increasing its NIL funds from 4 mil to 20 mil now. That’s right up there with programs like Texas and Ohio State. If Belichick is surrounded by talent he can be successful there. That’s what he did at NE. If Belichick finds a great QB and surrounds him with a couple of skilled players he’ll do just fine.
If you’re a player in Texas or Florida and Belichick gives you a call you’re most likely going to have a conversation and visit to the campus. I promise you with the new NIL structure he’s going to be able to get mostly whatever players he wants over there. UNC is strictly looking at this more from a business perspective than a coaching one. Give him what he wants and see if he’s successful with it like at NE it’s a success. If he’s not? Then fire him and go find you a young and successful coach you know that will.
Outside of Randy Moss in '07, who were the skill players he surrounded Brady with? Belichek was successful in New England for 3 reasons:
-
In a salary cap era, he had an elite QB who was paid below market rates, which basically gave NE about $10M a year extra cap space.
-
His QB was as attentive to the details as he was as a coach. This, imo, will be the hardest thing for him to replicate in college, because attention to detail for 18-22 year olds is not a common trait.
-
He understood defense well enough that he could morph his into something that took away the opponent’s key strength. This part will be very successful for him at the college ranks. Just look at OSU last year. Take away our Inside-Zone, RPO game, and suddenly OSU’s offense becomes inept.
Edelman, Welker, Gronk, Troy Brown, and Cooks. IMO, Belichick built an overall good enough team with whatever draft places he had to ensure Brady was successful.
His QB will depend on if he’s hitting the portal for a good one that already possesses all the mechanics. That’s what will be key for him. The fact that UNC is increasing NIL right up there with the top teams in the country tells me it will be less difficult for him to find such players.
I don’t disagree that Stoops wasn’t a good coach and delivered OU a great program with many conference titles. That said, OSU may not be able to pull in a stoops caliber coach. There is a second party at the table and that party may not want to go to no name Oklahoma. OU’s a historical blue blood and can pull may coach it wants. Okstate not so much. That’s why people should be cognizant that firing Gundy may not deliver the results you seek. I’d rather have a perennial 8-10 win program and make 18 straight bowl games than revert to the pre-Gundy years. But, some people may desire to shoot for the stars and crash upon launch. But, hey, at least they tried, right?
You’re absolutely right. And what I’ve mentioned before is he has his cryptonite….he’s loyal to a fault. He shoulda fired Dunn way before OG won the Doak. He shoulda found a different DC than the Nard. Gundy had an interview the offseason after Knowles left. He stated that, for the first time, he was able to offer whatever it took to keep a coordinator (Knowles). Knowles stated that he always had a desire to coach at a blue blood program and left for Ohio St. While Gundy was highly paid, he was never able to spend freely on coordinators. As I said in another reply, it takes two to sit at a table and negotiate. You can’t always assume the other party will sit. You seem to think OkState has the ability to hire whomever or recruit whomever, but that’s not necessarily the case.
Knowles was offered the same amount to stay but Knowles chose the BB. Thats a true story
And what guarantee do you have the program would go back to that? As if 3-9 WITH Gundy is any different?
Knowles was offered 1.3 mil at OSU. Ohio State offered him 1.9. He currently makes 2.2 mil. Stop giving people false information
No, what I’m saying is you don’t hire D2 coaches. You don’t make third stringers from a BB your starting QB. You go, and st the very minimum, you hire G5 coordinators that know what the he’ll they’re doing. This all could’ve been avoided, but Gundy did what Gundy does.
