Well, well, well. How the turn tables
It’s amazing what’s possible with recruiters who aren’t scared of the big boys
This is what I’m talking about. Snag highly recruited players from other programs if you can. We should’ve been doing this every since the 2021 season ended.
Yep that new coaching staff is killing it. I wonder how they managed to find their way to Stillwater?
This guy must have been given a large bag to come to Stillwater OK or is there another explanation of why he would chose OSU?
We’re statistically a Top 20 program over a long period of time. It’s a good landing place for guys who want to win, be developed, and have a chance to be drafted.
That’s why the lack of recruiting has been frustrating.
According to people like Michael13 we couldn’t get those type of guys to come here . Despite the fact that from 2005-2008 Gundy actually had two top 25 recruiting classes
. See what happens when you get a coaching staff that actually comes in and tries when it comes to recruiting? Good things happen when you’re forced to put your ego on the shelf by the BoR, and hire people that at least have experience in what they should be doing
.
Ok St. "( especially now with NIL ) can pull ANYONE in the country. Just like the rest of them. With big stacks of money and benefits.
Texas Tech right now is a great example of killing it in the portal.
Pulling the big stars isn’t Gundy’s style. He doesn’t handle divas well. Big personalities. IMO
I am puzzled by this,if just for the fact that you don’t get much bigger of an icon in a sport than Gundy, so why not use your clout to pull some crazy names man?
I will save my judgement on how effective high star recruiting really is for us until I see the results.
The problem is want to, not capacity for the blue chip players.
Yes that is what counts. Winning is what matters.
Hard to believe we had the money to buy a blue chip. Seems we are over stocked with DBs and tight ends. Next portal will thin out the crowd. So far on paper it looks like we have a team that can compete. I wonder what caused Gundy to realize he needed better players and coaches in order to win conference games? Did a mandate come down from Chad who probably got heat from mega donors, or did Gundy look in the mirror and realize he needs more frequent haircuts and better talent in every aspect of the program? 8 wins would turn the corner. Gundy can afford to donate $3 million to NIL each season. That buys you a good QB.
Tell me how many programs are winning more than one conference title by primarily recruiting almost nothing but three star players? Or third string quarterbacks from a BB program?
I consistently said on this forum that Gundy, after the 2021 season, shouldn’t hire inexperienced coaching and should be more aggressive in the portal. Go after good talent at the G5 schools and pull second string guys from BB program. What did he do? In the spring of 2022 he only picked up 9 players out of the portal and then in 2023 hired a D2 DC .
Each program will garner their own results, I do not see another that matches our current system beyond Utah, and that’s primarily due to having the same level of tenured coach on staff.
At the end of the day, 11-8 games won is not actually success according to the pay for play model.
I have no doubt SEC teams have been dumping $$$ into their 4 and 5 star recruits for decades. ( illicit or not. )
Penn State is a great example of a team that is proving they want to compete. Buying out the NC winning DC coordinator to make him the highest paid current DC to date.
We are not Georgia, Alabama, or OU. Their success in and around the portal and subsequent application of stars and how they matter is just witchcraft.
Were the actual recruiting values worth their salt, it would systemically suggest whom will win each year. In a more viable sense.
We are also not Vandy, NC State, or Charlotte. We are quite capable of pulling whomever we want. Coach or player. We just choose not to. ( price is too high for the payout… ) Tennessee’s recent QB that got pushed out is a great example.
Once the leadership gets a good handle of how much money equates to success, they will spend it accordingly.
Whatever that looks like.
A National Championship is success. The rest is just second place.
I’m not saying Gundy should be any of those programs. In fact, I don’t expect him to be any of those programs. If you paid attention to what I just said. How many teams recruiting mostly 3 star players have won more than one conference title in 20 years? The only ones in the current Big 12 I can think of are K State and Baylor.
What’s even more embarrassing is that we went winless in a conference with no BB schools while returning the most starters in the conference. I don’t expect Gundy to win a national title. My thought process has always been you have to prove you can win your conference consistently first before even thinking about the CFP or a NC for that matter.
No reasonable person should ever say Gundy should be winning at the same rate as those programs you mentioned. However, if 3-9 Arizona State can prove they can win the conference the next year. Then if Gundy is as good as people says he is. Then given that he has 30+ new players from the portal now with a decently experienced staff. There shouldn’t be any viable excuse as to why he can’t win this conference unless he just has a ton of injuries.
Surely we have all those new TE’s because they are listening to @bill18 advice. He needs to demand a paycheck me thinks.
Would it be possible that a new OC and DC could influence player personnel?
True! But be prepared to be disappointed. It’s 99% guaranteed. Actually I asked google AI and it said 0.005% chance of OSU winning a natty so there is that.
Agreed, I think he is the first maybe ever to have these ideas. We should be having conversations on if Kenyatta’s job is in jeopardy. His thoroughly researched opinions are indistinguishable from sideline personnel with decades of experience.
I couldn’t agree more. I’d also be happy just collecting without doing anything as well a lot like what Dunn, Nardo, and Rattay did as well.
