Both quarterbacks who transferred out from Oklahoma State this offseason have landed at Power Four programs. A day after news broke that Maealiuaki Smith was headed to Ole Miss, Garret Rangel announced via X that he’ll play at Virginia Tech. Rangel played three seasons in Stillwater, completing 52% of his passes for 1,075 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was a four-star quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class out of Frisco, Texas. Coming out of Lone Star High School, Rangel picked the Pokes over offers from Virginia Tech, Utah, Northwestern, Houston and others. Rangel entered this spring in a four-man quarterback battle with Smith, Zane Flores and TCU transfer Hauss Hejny. The group battled through the Cowboys’ spring camp before Rangel and Smith hit the portal. To provide some depth after losing two bodies, the Cowboys added freshman Tulsa transfer Banks Bowen to the room. Rangel was the most experienced option in the Cowboys’ quarterback room before he and Smith announced their intentions to transfer. Rangel joins a Hokie quarterback room that includes four other quarterbacks including 2024 starter Kryon Drones (1,562 passing yards and 16 total touchdowns) and backup William “Pop” Watson (481 passing yards and two total…
Hope he’s getting paid…
Was holding out hope he might return, but good luck to him and wish him all the best!
He’s better than the old Baylor guy
That’s a much better landing spot than I anticipated for him. I thought he’d fit better at a place like Colorado State.
I don’t think he’s going to play. They have a returning starter and returning backup. Unless the starter is bad and they’re trying to motivate him.
I get the sense you root against anyone who transfers out of OK State.
He’ll have a shot to compete for the starting spot next year.
Some of them also praise OSU’s undrafted free agents. Then trash a former OSU player that became one of the best tight ends in the country and was actually drafted .
Best of luck to the young man. He showed me, one of his biggest doubters, in that BYU game he has potential. I hope he wins QB1 job. I got three friends who went to VT and all of 'em been heartbroken since Beamer Ball cause they’ve stunk it up. Thought for sure Tulsa’s own Justin Fuente was gonna steer them back on the right path…
The world is a better place when the Hokies ball out. IMO anyway. Good look to the young man.
I wish him the best of luck. Virginia Tech has a great gameday environment with very loyal students and alumni. Can’t go wrong there.
You sense wrong. That’s just honest evaluation. Both QBs that left are:
1.) Mediocre
2.) Going to teams with more likely starters ahead of them.
Look at the late QB pick up we grabbed from Tulsa. I think he’s the exact same type of pickup. A designated third stringer who may not barf down his leg if injury issues force him to start a game.
These two guys were probably asked to leave or at least told they were out of the running. I don’t hold that against them. Trace Ford who left for OU–that had me rooting against him. Tyreek Hill who had to leave because he slapped around his pregnant baby mama–I’m rooting against that guy.
That girl evidently stayed with him cause at KC she filed a couple more complaints against him and they found out she lied on one or more. Probably sticking around for a money grab which she already has in the baby Doubt you ever know the real truth
Dude… different ladies. He married Kenny Vaccaro’s wife. Come on now, Google before you type.
- Kiffin & Pry must disagree
- That’s always the case when you join a new school - especially after spring
- Your evaluation has to extend beyond one year. Smith has 4 years left of eligibility and Rangel h
1.) I don’t think they disagree at all. This is the NIL era. No one wants to pay 3 QBs. We didn’t want to pay 4 QBs, so we dropped 2 and got a bargain QB for #3. That’s what VT and Ole Miss are likely doing. They’re grabbing a value guy in the price range of what they want to spend on a QB3 and hoping for some upside. Banks has very little chance to start here. Smith and Rangel have very little chance to start there.
2.) Ok.
3.) No, I’m taking that into account. The 4 star guy, top 20 player from Mississippi is Smith’s same classification. Unless he is such a rock star that he leaves early or he’s a complete whiff, Smith isn’t going to play… and by then there will be more competition in the QB room. Rangel is already a RS Jr. and VT has a RS Sr. incumbent QB. Maybe he’ll be in the mix next year, but he has one shot and VT’s backup from last year is still rostered.
Yeah that’s where you and I are at a sticking point.
I simply can’t believe that Lane Kiffin who is an egomaniac and QB guru at a school with a massive NIL budget is going to go out and offer a guy with 4 years left of eligibility 1 of 105 scholarships at the most important position because he thinks he’s a mediocre QB, but can be a nice “depth piece”.
Yeah, they’re well-funded, competing against other SEC teams that are also well and even better funded. You can only play one QB. You have 21 other starters and every one of those 21 positions has rotations unlike QB. You could spend your resources on a 3 deep player that won’t touch the field oooor you could spend your money on the other 50 players that will be on the field.
What does being a QB guru mean? If he can get the best out of someone, don’t you think he ought to be able to get more out of the two higher rated QBs that he’s had on campus and been working with already? You also don’t have the luxury of projects in the NIL era. Smith can leave at any time and Kiffin can grab a dozen portal guys as good as Smith any year.
I think I’m just shocked by how certain you feel that Smith is a perennial backup after he’s started 2 games as a true freshman on a bad team, and then (frankly) was able to leverage that tape to upgrade football programs.
Let’s be honest: as a QB, going to Ole Miss and being coached by Kiffin is a promotion from OSU being coached by Gundy.
