Unless he wanted to take the opportunity to put Marshall and PFB in their place. Two separate disparaging responses from one question. Had Gundy not punished Kyle Porter, probably wouldn’t have crossed my mind. As a fan, I would rather lose coaches to better paying jobs than seeing people I support get walking papers. Coaching is not easy on families.
@tomg Honest question……what did Porter/PF do that originally irked Gundy? I honestly am asking
Pro OSU guy? Ok. Does he know who he is asking a question to? Also, how long has that question been in the chamber? And they thought that was a good time? Ha! Learn to read a room. Also name the coach that has ever talked about coaching changes at the bowl game post game press conference? I’ll wait.
You know just like the lil ess you are. You will defend a 6 and 7 team more tge you own school. Talk about an idiot.
I can pick any coach a point out the bad chit they have done. Try this on for size. Chris your new buddy in 2020 only lost his qb. Started off hot 4 and 0 with a win over uo. Lose their qb and didnt win a game. The same back up qb every body is drooling over. Howard lost his first 10 games.
Its funny how you compare gundy to only the best each year. I didnt hear anybody praise matt and dave this year.
I will disagree a tad here with the “coaching isn’t easy on families”. That depends on what level you’re at. It also depends on what you mean by “easy”. These guys as Power 5 Coordinators are in bigtime positions. Big time perks. Big time benefits. Bigtime salaries. I understand there are downsides/negatives in all professions. But being a coordinator at a P5 is a pretty dang good gig.
You know what all those other guys have in common. Changing what they do to try to win. Nothing has changed and the results show it.
@SA_POKE That question has been on the minds of OSU people since they fell off the map late in the season. It’s been all over this site & others like it. All over sports talk. Speculation in newspapers. So it’s a pertinent topic for sure.
When do you think is a good time to ask that question? I think it’s a touchy question to ask DURING the season. But the season was over and he asked the question professionally and respectfully. He prefaced it beforehand. After the season ended last night was the perfect time to ask that question.
NO COACH is going to say “yes I’m firing Coach X”. That never happens & never will. That doesn’t relieve the reporter/media the duty of asking it. Tell me what coaches are honest about what really happened after a game? I’ll wait……. But that’s not the point. Gundy has a job to do. So does the media. Asking a tough question IS HIS JOB. What do you want him to do?
To ask tough questions but not lazy ones. It’s also the wrong timing.
However, I would have allowed a better question. A more direct question. Something like this…
Coach Gundy, do you believe it was the right choice to retain, promote, and give a raise to Coach Dunn after his performance this year?
So asking about a specific coach, by name in the postgame would’ve been acceptable. But asking about moves in general……is unacceptable & bad timing?
Asking about a coaches performance and the choices he made to keep said coach from leaving last year? Yes. Why? It’s a yes or no answer. It also doesn’t discuss firing that coach.
Asking if it was right to retain a coach…….is essentially discussing firing.
Marshall never used the word fire. He never mentioned a specific coach.
You said “read the room”. How do you think Gundy would’ve reacted if YOUR question had been asked last night? Gundy got downright pissy over a question “do you foresee any changes being made on your staff”. So how do you think your question would’ve been received that directly mentioned a coach by name & also challenges Gundys decision to promote him?
Coaching changes? Do you not think that means fire someone?
And I’ll give you your due. My question would be wrong timing and he would snap. So if you feel that way, how are you ok with the question he got mad at? It’s the same thing as you have proven.
Dude……EVERYONE THATS WATCHED OSU HAS QUESTIONS ABOUT COACHING CHANGES. Turn on sports talk radio. Go read a few OSU blogs. Read some papers that cover the Cowboys. That’s a valid, pertinent, justifiable question to ask. The ONLY reason to say it’s wrong to ask would be if this staff is beyond reproach, which they clearly are not. And watch……Gundy is going to make changes to this staff. Everybody knows it’s coming……THATS WHY THE QUESTION WAS ASKED.
Of course the phrase “coaching changes” entails firing a guy. I understand that……but I don’t have a problem asking the head football coach at a major university whether he anticipates making any changes to his staff at the conclusion of a highly disappointing season. You say he shouldn’t have been asked about coaching changes…….but then turn around and say you’d ask him……ESSENTIALLY ABOUT A COACHING CHANGE?!?!
Honestly, there is no scenario under which calling people vulgar names and threatening them is ever justified. In my book, Gundy demonstrated far worse judgement than Marshall.
Agreed. The question was tough, but extremely fair. It’s the only opportunity to ask it & quite frankly, he’s not doing his job if he doesn’t. I respect the heck outta guys that are obviously fans of their school but are also capable of doing their job.
You seem mad. Calm down with the caps lol.
It’s the wrong time to ask a question like that. He’s got to know how Gundy is and what he is known for. If you want OSU to succeed, why would you ask a question that could make the coach react a certain way? Did you see any positive response coming to that question before asking it? Now there is bad press about it. Does this make OSU look good? Nope.
I 100% agree this is a question that needs to be asked but not at that moment. It’s a question that will be asked again. And the first one better be about Dunn but can we wait til they get back home. Surely this isn’t the last time he’ll get to ask him a question.
I’m not mad. It’s showing a point when using caps. That’s it.
“It’s the wrong time”. Ok……so when is an ok time to ask it? The season is over. Gundy isn’t going to meet the media again until likely Feb signing day and by then the changes will have already been made. So if not at the conclusion of the season……then when?
“If you want OSU to succeed……” Dude his job is a journalist. Not a fan. His job is to cover OSU football. Not let his rooting interest influence how he covers them. That’s not what a journalist is or should ever be. A journalist’s job is not to worry about how asking a question “looks”. You’re a fan. That’s ok. Marshall cannot be when doing his job.
Someone earlier replied that the reporter is pro OSU. To me it doesnt seem like it. And yes reporters can have bias.
We’ll agree to disagree. You say good timing and I say bad. We agree the question should be ask. Fair?
And I’ll say that of the coaches, Dunn should be discussed. How do you feel about that?
“Pro OSU” meaning Scott is an OSU grad. He’s working for/under the PistolsFiring umbrella. Again……rooting for your interest is fine. You don’t put your fandom away for life when you become a journalist. However, if you can’t be honest and do your job then you have no credibility. HES A JOURNALIST. That’s what they do. Saying a journalist shouldn’t ask a question…….is insanity to me.
Timing: I say it’s the PERFECT time to ask that question. You have said “bad” timing. So again I ask you……when do you propose it gets asked? Gundy isn’t doing a presser until likely signing day in Feb. The changes will have been made by then. So……when do you ask that question?
My assessment of Cowboy football was spotty QB play, terrible OL play & questionable play calling. Whoever is in charge of those facets……needs to answer some questions.
And Gundy has been in somewhere around 250 postgames over 17 years as a HC. He’s had tough questions asked before. I’m sure he’s had some that were very critical and combative. The one asked last night was neither of those. Gundy could’ve simply said “I will look at everything going fwd”. Then this is a non story. But he intentionally chose to hammer the guy for doing his job.
Okay we’ll just disagree haha.
Agree on the 3rd paragraph though. OL hasn’t been great since Wickline left imo. QB spotty play was to be expected once Sanders went down.
