IMO Gunnar doesn’t add much value to our staff and following this past year and all the drama with the BOR it seems like terrible timing and optics. I get he’s MGs kid and a dad is gonna dad, but I don’t see how this helps our football team in any way. And at a time where next year’s team HAS to bounce back (or MG is out of a job), this seems like a bad move.
It doesn’t help the team, but it doesn’t hurt it. So I don’t care. It’s not going to affect the outcome of games. He’s not going to be the guy developing the QBs, we all know that. Most likely just a case of putting a title on him so he has something for a resume going forward. Plus, contrary to belief I’m sure the kid knows stuff about playing QB, he can give helpful pointers here and there. Same thing as tracin getting a spot on staff solely because his brother was a star and they wanted to keep him around in some capacity. And he has helped in that area, albeit in a rather tiny role.
It’s just a quality control position, and I doubt he’s even drawing salary. It’s not like Gunnar is the QB Coach or Offensive coordinator. Honestly, if it were not for his name, no one would even know who any of our quality control guys were because it such a low position on the totem pole. Tracin Wallace did something similar to stay at OSU after his injuries/playing career ended. Robert Allen’s son has an even more prominent position assisting the O-line despite RA working for the school.
Definitely a nothingburger, but still stupid of Mike to do. This season, whether right or wrong, he will be under intense scrutiny for every single decision he makes. His goodwill is used up even amongst the die-hard Gundy fanboys.
Gunnar probably knows more about football than a lot of D1 coaches. It’s been his DNA since he was big enough to talk I imagine. Hiring him isn’t anything to biotch about, with the new rules you can hire a coach for every single player you have if you wanted to . Gunnar will add instead of being a hindrance
Well said, Michael. Just to add to it … Gunnar will not even have an on-field “coach” role. It is just a quality control position. Thus, he’s not taking away a position from anyone.
Under the old rules, only those in the coach positions could be on the field of play. Maybe those rules changed when the number of coaches rules changed. But irrespective, where I think Gunnar would excel is in the film room, which aligns with the QB quality control role. So, yeah, he could have I think impactful discussions with athletes in that way. Like you said, he’s been around this his entire life.
Gunnar knows more about football than a lot of D-1 coaches is a ridiculous statement. I don’t have an opinion one way or another about the kid being in whatever GA type role he’s in but that statement is flat out insane.
It’s been ingrained in his head since he was big enough to read and understand. If he’s intelligent he will take something from every coaches take on what they do. So I’ll stand by my statement, you can have your opinion too
The only limitation on number of coaches pertains to recruiting. You can have as many as you want on your coaching staff…but can only have 10 that go recruit.
There is no limitation anymore on the number of coaches, analysts and so on. They can coach on gamedays now too. The only limitation is on recruiting. You can only have 10 coaches that are allowed to go out and recruit.
This may be a positive addition and I certainly hope it is, but let’s also not forget to see what this really is: Mike giving his son a valuable opportunity to easily enter the football coaching world at a D-1 university before he soon steps away and can no longer provide that.
