Saying “I was wrong” is as powerful as it gets.
This article was just as refreshing as Gundy’s apology video. Nice job, KP.
Some excellent points made. I would push back that true leadership is not putting yourself in a position where you need a public apology to save your job. I will say the second apology was better than the first.
Why should anybody have to apologize to anybody for a political belief??? That’s where we are in society? Put the shoe on the other foot for a sec. does gundy have the right to stand up and tell Chuba he’s not going to coach him because he wore a CNN shirt and have support by other republicans and have no backlash? If not where’s the equality we are so striving for? This is totally discriminatory And hypocritical on Chuba’s part and someone in the media needs to quit being such a cowered and stand up for what’s right. These kids unfortunately are confused what they are fighting for and it’s sad. We don’t need a kid on the team who thinks this is ok and call him self a leader!
Nice writing KP! We’ve all been wanting to see some humility from Mike Gundy. I’m thankful we have a locker room full of guys who were willing to put in the effort to understand his perspective as well, while explaining their individual perspectives to him.
I really think this has the potential to galvanize the locker room.
Hopefully this whole situation will result in Gundy having more self awareness.
Thank you for answering some of my questions KP. While I still feel ill at the thought of how all this went down, I do think that what I just read in your article is genuine and that you want the best for Oklahoma State. We disagree on what that is in some areas, but I appreciate your openness on this one.
Just like Chuba should have text or called his coach instead of jumping on Twitter, I hope Kyle Boone will use his brain before tweeting next time also. Like you said, its better when we are all pulling in the same direction.
Well said. True leadership is accepting responsibility and empowering others. He can use Mike Boynton as an example.
Why does he never smile? For all his wealth and success on the field, I don’t think he’s a happy man.
When you know better you do better. It’s more than a t-shirt. It’s what that t-shirt represents and obviously the players in that locker room as a group don’t want to be associated with the message behind that “t-shirt”. I’m hoping and I truly believe Oklahoma State will be better for everything that has happened the past couple of days. The Gundy apology is a good 1st step. The players should continue to give their perspective. Good article KP.
Congratulations on conforming the program so that now players on the team can wear saggy pants, listen to gangsta rap that is profanity laced, earrings and hair as seen fit by the player…There was so much power control by Gundy that it was completely out of hand…You saved the program!
You don’t know what it represents you were told what it represents by Left wing people. No matter how you look at it, it all ends right back to…are you a republica or Democrat lol. Your a Democrat. Stop the BS.
What is wrong with earrings and hair as seen fit by the player? The coach wears his hair as he sees fit. Why the double standard?
You pointed two of the four points…What is your opinion of the other two?
Are you being willfully obtuse or is the entire point of all of this really just flying right over your head? There’s no discussion to be had with you because you aren’t willing to look at things through the lens of somebody different from you. You don’t see these players as human beings, you just see them as machines who just need to shut up and play. If Gundy was as stuck in his ways as you are, we wouldn’t have a team at this point.
The players gave their perspective on what it represents. They let their voice be heard. I’m proud of them for speaking up, and I still believe Gundy is the man for the job.
Or…it has nothing to do with an outdated two party political system and more to do with common sense and being able to look at issues with nuance.
The Oklahoma State players are more intelligent than some people would like to portray. What is wrong with allowing people to express themselves? We all wear our clothes, hair, etc. differently and like different kinds of music. I think that’s a good thing. I don’t want a world where everyone looks exactly the same.
A very thoughtful, well written article KP!
You are in the right profession !
Just wanted to post a rare comment as I felt like this needed to be said. Now the intent here is to be constructive toward PFB but if you feel it isn’t please feel free to delete this post. Now the only thing that I have to say about Gundy and the football team and the actions that each took during this debacle is that I am glad that they are on the path to putting the situation to rest in a positive manner. The one thing that does bother me is my perception of the PFB and it’s coverage of it. After reading the many PFB articles on this subject and going through some of the twitter posts, including KB’s seeming outing of coach Gundy in his fishing trip photo, it seems that PFB maybe falling on the wrong side of this current wave of cancel culture that is poisoning this country (just my opinion) . So just some food for thought, my perceptions could be right or they could be wrong. Everyone is free to makeup up their own mind.
