In a Tense Moment for OSU, Mike Gundy's Apology Was a Refreshing Act of Humility

Bravo! Well done. Hit the nail on the head. Gundy must not politk from the press conference podium. The university is diverse not just black and white in the locker room but conservative and liberal, gay and straight, Asian and Native American. He represents the UNIVERSITY…he represents the whole…he must act like it. I’m a liberal and I wouldn’t want a liberal coach spewing the opposite of what Gundy has been spewing at press conferences. If Gundy wants to be a mouth piece for the right wing then leave the university and be Trumps mouthpiece or whoever he wants to mouthpiece for but no mouth piecing at a university. There was a reason why there were crickets after his goofy Covid press conference…because no coach in America agreed with him and he certainly didn’t represent his university, the administration or the NCAA when he did it. He is not an island of one. He used the university as a cover to go on his right wing rants and dropping of right wing buzzwords. Unless he wants to coach the all white right wing team of 1970 Texas, he needs to shut his mouth and coach his team. He’s going to potentially kill himself in recruiting. Hopefully this apology is sincere, he minimizes the damage and finds a better to heart to lead men.

I understand where you are coming from. However,…even if you don’t agree with Chuba, you have to be able to understand the reality of where the coach and the school is. The school needs players like Chuba now and in the future. Those players when they have success automatically have a platform to drive views that affects lot of things that includes in this case the school we both love. That is just a fact of life with anything. The football program is the single biggest revenue generator in athletics for the school (for any school for that matter). Apart from the opportunity to enjoy the sport as a fan, It also creates so much value for Alumni by being nationally relevant where the quality of players and the coaching allows OSU to be in the top 25 in most years. When an Alumni gets to the job market (specially those with little experience) the University brand from being known nationally helps… it helps build networks etc etc etc. Now all that is enabled by mostly black athletes the team need to be able to compete and stay relevant in the big 12 let alone nationally. For those black athletes who could have gone anywhere but have chosen to come to OSU, the coach needs to be at least empathetic to their views and how they see life (Their paradigm). Chuba was not asking Gundy to subscribe to his beliefs. He was offended by Gundy flaunting his beliefs with a T shirt that represented something that was against Chuba’s beliefs. There is no point in you or anyone else arguing that OAN is not a racist establishment. In fact, no matter hard you argue your points, you cannot force others to subscribe to your views. What matters is whether the black players see it as a racist organisation and whether they were hurt by their coach flaunting the TV channel’s T shirt. You cannot get the best out of your black players let alone keep them on your team if you do the complete opposite of being empathetic.

Gundy shouldn’t apologize for nothing. OAN is a conservative news site. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Msnbc, Cnn, nbc, abc, cbs, spill all liberal garbage and nobody brings that up? I’ll Never spend another dime on this site.

What if I wear a shirt proudly that says I’m an Independent voter and someone has a problem with it. Should I just go ahead and meet their demands because they don’t like it?

What matters is that they give a credible and reliable source/explanation on why they believe so. If not, then you are going to have a hard time convincing people.

What about players of other racial ethnicity? They don’t get to have a say in anything at all? Maybe we should get their thoughts?

You are logical in making your point. However, no body is asking for anyone to subscribe to their own beliefs. Just don’t flaunt the disagreeable views if you hold a position of leadership like Gundy. Combine that with the power these players have to basically shut down a football program all on their own explains why Gundy had to essentially do the right thing.

Black players are not saying, here are our rules and everyone must live by them. They are asking to be treated with empathy. That is not hard to do. If the University goes down as supporting racism (we can argue all day whether that is a fact or not but it does not matter) because black players labelled it as such, you will hardly be able to retain or bring any players with the right skills to the team. In the meantime, the schools that don’t have a problem with just being empathetic, specially in the current context, will have a free hand in grabbing those players who otherwise would have come to OSU.

The bottom-line is it does not matter how the players arrived at their views. It is how they feel and see the world and they have the power to decide what to do with it. The society is wired to support winners. These players are winners and they do wield power in the context of football. That is why coaches and schools do so much to attract the best players. This whole issue ultimately comes down to a business decision for coaches and schools. It’s good for business to show empathy, reconcile and move forward.

Depends on who you are and what context. If you are not in a position of power (average person on the street like most people), then nobody is going to come and make demands from you regardless of what your shirt reads.

The coach is practically forced to apologize and Hubbard pretty much got what he wanted.

“Just don’t flaunt the disagreeable views if you hold a position of leadership like Gundy”

Hubbard is obviously one of the LEADERS of the team. Instead of coming to his coach and resolving something at the lowest level possible (Like it should be) it’s posted all over Twitter and made into a national story. When your the best HB in the country you should know that reporters and journalists are watching your every tweet.

“It’s good for business to show empathy, reconcile and move forward.”

I agree. However, it’s not good for the employees of a business to wield all the power and decision making. If there are inhumane practices against employees and it needs to be changed or addressed so be it. Someone you work with or a supervisor wearing a shirt you don’t agree with is a different story. You don’t have to change the entire makeup of an organization because a few people get upset.

How can you possibly understand or fix anything if they can’t or aren’t willing to express how they arrived at their views? If I were in that position I would WANT to know why. I think the other side of the equation should be willing to as well.

“The coach is practically forced to apologize and Hubbard pretty much got what he wanted.” - well Gundy made a business decision to keep his job and to save the football program. He said it himself it was “dumb” to have worn the shirt. It actually was dumb to do that when majority of the team were black and basically the message that gave to the team was " I don’t give a rat’s a-- about your views or how you see the world".

“Hubbard is obviously one of the LEADERS of the team. Instead of coming to his coach and resolving something at the lowest level possible (Like it should be) it’s posted all over Twitter and made into a national story. When your the best HB in the country you should know that reporters and journalists are watching your every tweet.” - agree. Chuba could have gone about it differently. However, him calling Gundy out whether publicly or privately was not wrong. Its just the way he felt and he wielded the power he had to make a change as he saw it. We would never know if Gundy would have agreed the same way if it was done privately as there would not have been a media storm behind it. I hate it that this happened and the bad rap that OSU got for it. But it was self inflicted by Gundy being “dumb” as he was in wearing that T shirt.

to you last point - in a normal work setting what you say applies 100%. In a normal work setting normal employees most likely would not be in the 0.0003% of the population with the kind of ability to do the job at the supremely high level required and have a national media following to boot. In football and at all American level you are truly blessed to have the skills you have and the power that comes with it. The context is very different to a normal work environment. Also keep in mind Chuba gets paid equivalent of the college costs which is peanuts compared to Gundy’s $5.2 million salary. A player who works for Gundy for essentially no salary and his skills help Gundy keep getting paid that salary speaking out and asking the coach to be empathetic is not asking for a lot.

I am sure that conversation was had between Gundy and the players. Apparently talked for 2 hours… Players would have explained why and what specific issues were hurting them. Gundy obviously took that in and decided that he was “dumb” to wear the T shirt.

“He said it himself it was “dumb” to have worn the shirt.”

I would probably say the same thing after practically being threatened to be fired.

But it was self inflicted by Gundy being “dumb” as he was in wearing that T shirt

Gundy wearing a shirt doesn’t necessarily equate to him being dumb. How is he suppose to know he is offending someone yet when nobody has mentioned it to him?

We would never know if Gundy would have agreed the same way if it was done privately as there would not have been a media storm behind it.

That’s why I said that if Chuba wasn’t listened to with a one on one conversation with Gundy then go ahead and publicly address the issue.

“ Also keep in mind Chuba gets paid equivalent of the college costs which is peanuts compared to Gundy’s $5.2 million salary. A player who works for Gundy for essentially no salary and his skills help Gundy keep getting paid that salary speaking out and asking the coach to be empathetic is not asking for a lot.”

Chuba is also on a scholarship. Nobody is saying Gundy shouldn’t be empathetic. Chuba is not the LeBron James of college football. A player shouldn’t dictate based on empathy what other people are allowed to wear. It’s completely understandable if Gundy represents the university and he was caught wearing a shirt with a rebel flag, swastika, or KKK shirt. This was simply a news network shirt that was blown completely out of proportion.

All the same applies to Chuba, yet you have no problem with him expressing his views.

Chuba can say what he wants. It doesn’t mean everyone else has to agree with him or even to be silent in the face of his lack of understanding. It’s ok if Gundy wants to have views that are different than SOME of the players. You do realize that some players agree with his views. Are they not allowed to express them now? Are they to be silent so as not to offend the “star”? Are their beliefs now cancelled?

My Mom taught me to respect the opinions of others but to stand up for what I believe in. I should never have to compromise my beliefs to appease the beliefs of another. In fact, I have a duty to state the truth in the face of falsehoods.

Claims that wearing a throw away OAN t-shirt while fishing is bad is patently absurd and that should be clearly pointed out even if it hurts somebody’s feelings or impinges on their beliefs. They are wrong and should be told so.

And it should be pointed out to those who think kowtowing to the mob and discarding or hiding your own beliefs is some kind of grand accomplishment are equally as wrong and should be told so as well. Yes, it’s ok to be different. I would hope my University embraces that diversity.

Respect is a two way street, not a four way stop sign.

Pointing out Chuba apologized for not reaching out directly. Right after Gundy spoke without any apology. This is why only Gundy had to do a second apology. You have much further to go than Gundy but I hope you get there.

Yeah, I have a lot further to go to pierce through the lies and misinformation.

And I will say again that I have no idea what “problems” Chuba is talking about with the program, but claiming wearing an OAN t-shirt hurts their feelings is just about as absurd as you can get. Talk about being misinformed.

And BLM is a violent, leftist, racist organization. They want to kill cops. Will the players who support BLM apologize to Gundy for supporting cop killing? Oh, will they say they don’t support that part of BLM? Or maybe they do. But they don’t allow Gundy that same deference for his supposed support of OAN?

The hypocrisy and double standard just reeks here. And these are college students? Yeah, a lot further to go.

One can support the black lives matter movement and idea without supporting the black lives matter organization.

And one can support OAN without supporting all of their viewpoints.

Does Chuba know that? The hypocrisy is the entire point.

My understanding is the shirt was evidence that Gundy wasn’t actually listening during meetings about the players thoughts surrounding the protests. Maybe he was, but what’s the evidence of that?

Please provide a non OAN source for the following repsonse.

“And BLM is a violent, leftist, racist organization. They want to kill cops.”

BLM protestors chanting:

What do we want? Dead cops.
When do we want it? Now!

Pigs in a blanket, fry em like bacon!

Do you support violence against cops?

You could easily find this if you wanted to. I am not sure if you are that oblivious or purposely obtuse.
