I watched the ISU game as I cried myself to sleep last night. Lots of TE and FB personnel sets. They’re in there blocking, just not getting many passing targets.
What baffled me is that we rarely had 2 WR’s split out wide to spread out the defense. Majority of formations looked like a max protect with even receivers bunched up near the box. Weird given our WR athleticism. Result was the D could stay in the box AND pass protect our bunched up receivers.
One of Backfoot’s Ints was targeting TE Johnson in a very crowded midfield. 2 receivers and 4 defenders bunched up. FB Cassity was also targeted but well covered and inaccurate throw. Overall the TE and FB/H were not targeted often.
And of course Presley was floating around open waving to get Backfoot’s attention. Interesting sideline discussion where BP tried to talk with Backfoot with Backfoot turning his back on him.
You just listed the Holgy, Monken, Yurcich years. And for context, both Holgy and Monken were tossed “keys to the Ferrari” and they drove it very well. Yurcich was here long enough to do some program building along with calling great plays and coaching QB’s.
Knowles finished well in years 4 and 5, but his first 3 were questionable.
Dunn has had his shot and proven his play calling will not “elevate” our offense. It’s time, time to find someone who can play call around deficiencies and actually improve our chances to win games.
A productive offense solves most of our problems.
P.S. Clicked through our ISU game last night and was NOT impressed with the play calling. Our sets bunched receivers into the box enabling ISU to play both run D and zone coverage simultaneously.
Knowles DID NOT roll a Top 25 defense for well into his stay at OState, but that last year was definitely memorable.
Funny that you pick the one “clarification” to nitpick, instead of the softball slam dunk regarding OC’s and our record. I’m actually agreeing with you. LOL
