Mike Holder's $17 Million Problem

Here is one thing I can agree on. His antics of playing around with other jobs to get a pay raise is kind of irritating. Some coaches do this though. Not all but some.

That’s actually a great idea Bruce. We need specifics on unchecked power and not just generalizations. I agree that KP should show us what unchecked power looks like.

“Hubbard and other players inside the Cowboys program embarked on a daunting project that no Oklahoma State president, board member or athletic director has publicly attempted – save Mike Gundy from himself. Essentially, Hubbard’s public outcry is forcing Gundy to make significant strides in his personal growth and evolve to the modern era by addressing deficiencies that other OSU leaders let spiral for more than a decade.”

Except he didn’t save Gundy from himself. He just gave him an additional task and problem to worry about. Gundy should be focused on coaching football. He shouldn’t be focused on fighting for his job because someone disagrees with him.

“Some people need to be educated,” Hubbard said in an ESPN video. He added: “I’m going to do my best to educate him and do my best to make Oklahoma State a better program for all athletes.”

Is Hubbard making OSU a “better” program for all athletes? I have a feeling not everyone on the team agrees with him. You can’t claim to know what’s best for the football program unless you know first hand what every player on the roster will agree to before demanding change. That’s what we call entitlement thinking. That doesn’t necessarily equate to what’s best for an entire group.

Purple states might but subsidizing us all from what I found.

The article goes into a lot more into the back story of how Hubbard reacted to the OAN shirt. The T shirt was just the final straw. Gundy had been completely distant and uncaring during the pandemic. Even him posting pictures and videos enjoying a privileged life without even contacting a single player is really shocking behaviour. The players were having to take cuts but nothing for the headman. Gundy could have made sure the players were taken care of by taking a small pay cut himself. The details in the article I would say is really damaging for recruiting. It seems that no one in leadership had bothered to check on the players welfare during the pandemic … the same players who bring in $40 million per year to the university.

If you reveal sources, then you lose your sources. Where do you think Thamel got the info? Someone close to the program, possibly local writers, gave him the info because if they write that stuff, MG will cut them off from the team like he has PFB. It’s really not that hard to figure out.

While good information this doesn’t match my analysis. This only deals with spending (Government money to states) and not money states pay to the federal government. The overall point is conservatives politicians complain about social welfare. From the data I posted the federal government provides 1/3 or all money spent in the state of Oklahoma. In essence other states are covering the cost of social programs in Oklahoma. I find that conflicts with the “pull your own weight” mentality portrayed through out conservative media. It is also deeply ironic that conservative media portrays Democrats as always looking for a hand out.

Okay…or it’s quite possible he wrote it the way he wanted so his article would receive views and comments since it’s human nature that people thrive on negative news and it just so happens to be a hot topic not only at OSU but in every place across America right now.

If you don’t want him gone, why use his buyout in the title? Here’s a couple title ideas: Mike Holder’s PR Problem, Mike Holder’s Unchecked Football Coach Problem. If you’re not advocating for his removal, and OSU is not looking to fire him, then the buyout number is irrelevant. How about “Mike Holder Needs to Reign-In His Thoroughbred Coach”?

Not the way I read it. 17 million is the primary factor in retaining Gundy. If there was no buy out Gundy wouldn’t be the coach at oSu today IMO. His leadership had toxic elements that impacted coaches and players in his program. His behavior to those outside the program (AD, fans, media) was not good either. None of that changes the fact Mike Gundy was the right coach for oSu at one point. It is very sad that he changed that dynamic, but this happens with many people in positions of power. We all need to remember the pressure and stress that is put on people in positions of power and forgive them when they struggle.

This is almost certainly true.

Kyle you say it isn’t about a shirt, it’s been all about the shirt. It is what started this fiasco. You have mentioned it 50 times in the articles from you and KB… I’ve stated several times Gundy is unconcerned and aloof. Hopefully this will wake his a** up to be more in touch with his players. I don’t think he is racist, no way. But write about it in that form. Gundy isn’t getting fired unless Holder wants to pay a huge sum to get rid of him, he really doesn’t have a valid excuse to do it. But come on man write something positive , there are many positives. I’m sure you have heard Pat Jones stating he has heard the players are telling Chuba to cool it. It’s dividing the team. I have no I idea if it is or not. But the longer you keep writing about the more it festers. Let’s all get on the same page. I promise you if they pull together and win the Big 12 this year this will just be a bad memory
I worry about recruiting the longer it’s a hot topic

If it was about a shirt don’t you think Gundy would have gotten more public support?

The only reason he isn’t getting any public support is because he’s going on almost a decade without winning anything of important significance. He’s 2-13 against the school’s biggest rival and has one Big 12 title in 15 seasons.

Now if he were a Dabo Swinney, Nick Saban, Lincoln Riley, or (dare I say Ed Orgeron) then he would have gained more public support. Now if he has at least three conference titles and let’s say five or six wins against OU then you would see more public support.

Former players and coaches, from within his program, is who I was talking about. Sorry for the confusion.

Well if there was no buy out it’s likely there would be no contract and no Gundy to wear a t-shirt at least at OSU

Good points Michael. KB tweeting about the shirt started this whole thing and second I too worry about what all this will do to the team dynamics. We all know that it not only takes talent but a cohesive team unit to do well in D1 football and I worry that all this might serve to drive a wedge between and among players and coaches making team focus difficult

Haisten can write what he wants. He’s paid for readers. Just don’t get the negativity of articles when we could be in for a special season. The little clause of why Gundy could be fired , any well versed attorney could eat that for lunch. He wore a frigging T-shirt I’m done discussing this here, I get nauseous doing it :cowboy_hat_face:

Yes I am done with this too. These articles imply that Gundy doesn’t have any value as a coach any more aside from the fact that it will take 17 million to get rid of him. Sorry but that’s a really stupid assertion in my book. I could say a lot more about Gundy, the failings cited about him which are still mostly unclear and for the few cited seem correctable and racism in general being falsely perpetuated by the woke crowd, politicians and those who profit from it but I won’t. At this point talking about it is just beating a dead horse. One either sees it how I do or they don’t and nothing I can say or facts that I present will change that. Have a great day!
