With James Franklin being fired from Penn State, who says no to us signing him ASAP?
We know the next head coach at OSU should not be an alum and it needs to be someone who can actually coach. Franklin isn’t moving laterally to another powerhouse, but will step back a tier in order to show he’s still got it. Seems like OSU’s a great fit for that.
Who says no?
And no, I can’t imagine ZRob coming back to Stillwater.
“Franklin was 4-21 at Penn State against AP top-10 opponents, including 1-18 against top-10 Big Ten teams in conference games. Franklin’s .160 winning percentage against AP top-10 teams is tied for the third-worst record by a coach (minimum 25 games) at a single school since the poll era began in 1936, according to ESPN Research”
That was what I referenced to thinking about Franklin, Gundy had a better record against top 10 rankings. I’m not real familiar with Franklin other than usually top 15 school. Whoever we get needs to know Texas well , not sure he does
Not really anyone that stands out to me other than Zac as far as staying if successful
James Franklin to OSU is not realistic at all. OSU doesnt hire guys that were already HC’s. Mike Gundy, Les Miles, Bob SImmons, Pat Jones, Jimmy Johnson, Jim Stanley…those guys were all Assts. They also arent going to pay what Franklin will be asking. OSU is a good job. Not great, but good. Thinking OSU can get James Franklin is crazy talk
It’d be crazy talk if he didn’t just get fired. He’ll take a step back in prestige for the university he goes to. Which means he’s looking at a tier 2 football school (strong track record, non-blueblood). He’d be here 3-4 years and then move up again.
The way we’ve hired in the past means nothing. You think the same group who fired the most successful coach in the history of the program only 1/3 of the way through the season is doing things ‘as usual’? Nope. This is a completely different landscape we live in.
I wont argue the landscape being different. Thats true. A couple questions here. Where do you rank/list the OSU football job? Is it a top 15 job? Top 25? Ballpark, where do you list this job historically? What do you think the reasons are that would make James Franklin want to take the OSU job?
You said hes looking at a football school with a “strong track record..”. You think OSU has a strong track record?
We were below .500 in wind before Gundy ,…,now we are about ,550 without looking. The only coaches that made us relevant were Stanley, JJ, Les, , then Gundy … I don’t really put Pat in there, he had j Thurmond, Barry, and Hart Lee.,. No we have never decided we wanted to be a football school till Gundy and the money in it now. I think Gundy got us in the top 30 schools but it will sink fast if the next coach doesn’t circle the wagon with donors
Top 30 is exactly where I would put it. The new conf realignment does do it any favors, but I think historically its a top 30 job. IMO, there are 27 that are better programs. You get in to a handful of others that are very similar.
The portal/NIL allow a turnaround to POTENTIALLY happen much quicker than it used to.
I hope this question finds its way to Colby and Carson for the next pod.
I’m curious why we’re not hearing the names of more assistants (besides Colin Klein) currently in CFB. I think assistants like Will Stein and Andy Kotelnicki have a lot to offer. Carson said in the Kansas recap episode that Chad wants a young coach that knows NIL. Both of these guys come from jobs that do NIL well, have or have had great offenses, are great recruiters, and have experience in the Big 12 (Stein: Texas 2015-2017; Kotelnicki: Kansas 2021-2023). Did I miss something that Chad only wants a HC? Are these guys are already connected to another job? I worry we’re overlooking great candidates just to get a guy with HC by the name.
(For Stein I know the argument will be made that we don’t have Phil Knight. I agree but at this point we just need a HC that knows NIL. The point could be made since the start of NIL we haven’t had a head football coach that knows how to [or wants to] do NIL properly)
Kotelnicki is very popular. He is going to be a HC when he decides to. Stein will too. But those guys also arent going to go to a place where they will be behind the 8 ball early on. Thats why Im not sold on Klein taking the OSU job. There are a bunch of jobs open and he will get his shot if he wants it.
Stein and Kotelnicki might be grand slam hires but I think several of the ones that have interviewed would be better hires. For example Eric Morris has a history of great quarterbacks, head coaching experience and scores lots of points. Or another example is Kane Wommack who has a little head coaching experience and as a defensive coordinator has a defense that works in modern day football.
