Why would the games except for “about 20 teams” not be televised? Why in the world would that be the case?!?! I don’t know where you guys are getting this stuff from. I don’t know where all of a sudden you guys act like the landscape has changed. That was my question……the same majority of programs have always dominated college football. This is not a new phenomenon. In what era of football did the “Have nots” somehow have a better seat at the table? Honest question
Evidently you didn’t see the disparity OSU had with the program until 2000 Ketchup. I give you a lot more games are televised now than pre 2000
We have built a decent program under Gundy, missed playing in the big game by that much
Unless you’re a BB You don’t get many chances at that. I know some on here think we should be in the BB class by now🙄 decades ….
You still aren’t getting the point that the gap widens when more and more money is needed to play at the highest of high and still no guarantee you will get there. ATM come to mind
“The gap widens”……I agree. It is becoming more difficult for the have nots. I do not argue that. But you guys are acting like the Have Nots are suddenly going to disappear. Or somehow not even have their games televised. That’s insanity. The overall game/brand of college football HAS GOTTEN MORE POPULAR. “Better”? That’s predicated upon who you ask. I’ll give you that. But the popularity is going through the roof right now. Starting next year, OSU will be in a Conf in which they are on as level a playing field as they’ve ever been. How is that somehow going to lessen the popularity!!! That’s insane. The SEC is better next year. The Big 10 is better. The playoffs are expanded and will have bigger ratings than anything outside of the NFL. Will YOU turn away? Apparently so. Will some of your compadres on here follow suit? I guess. But for you guys to somehow assume that the rest of the college football world is going to turn away simply due to the Have nots being lesser…….you’re fooling yourselves.
What percentage of fans would you guesstimate watched the Central Ark and South Alabama games on ESPN+?
What %? I’d guess 30k people watched that game. USC-Colorado was 7.2 million. UGA-Auburn was 6 million. The Colorado-Oregon game the week before was over 10 million people. But yeah……the popularity is fading:joy:. And yeah….that’s ONLY Colorado & Oregon fans watching
.
If I’m not mistaken, which I well could be our game and OU I ‘21 was something over 8 million? Anyone disagree with that ? Is it because of OU popularity or people outside of Oklahoma watching ? We have usually draw well on tv when we were good to decent. What I’m saying is I’m not going anywhere from OSU , I’m saying if we aren’t involved in any type of CC or playoff I’m not watching the B1G or the SEC unless Alabama and Georgia etc ,… you are confusing what I’m saying. This game shouldn’t have to be about money !! It should be about a level playing field without 100,00” handshakes. Let me ask you Ketchup is the roles were reversed would be so adamant about how it’s going ?
Of course I would! It’s just fact. I wouldn’t like it if I was a fan of someone like Cal or Purdue. I’m not saying college football is thriving because I’m an OU fan. I’m saying it because the proof is right in front of you. Football is king. The NFL & college. The numbers tell you that. From viewership. To money. To demand. To popularity.
I don’t like the portal. Hate it actually. Think it’s a negative for the sport. But……I’m not bitter enough to think that’s somehow in the process of hurting or damaging the popularity of it. By every metric you OU can find……it’s increasing popularity. Again, next years regular season will be LOADED. The Big 10 & SEC regular season games will be MASSIVE draws. I completely understand that there will be some actual casualties (old rivalry’s, traditional matchups, a handful of schools maybe that got left out during realignment). But the landscape hasn’t changed. The teams that will run college football havent changed. It’s been this way for 100 years. The people saying that all of a sudden it’s the “Haves VS Have Nots”……are ignoring the history of college football. I’d argue that OSU is now on BETTER footing going fwd now that the Conf is a legitimate one. All I read on here was posters saying it’s better for OSU to never have to play Bedlam. The new Big 12 is there for the taking. It gives you a seat at the table. Your chances at a playoff berth are better going fwd than they’ve ever been. And you’re telling me that somehow that’s going to turn enough people off to have any type of impact on the game!!! Come on dude. You’re smarter than that. You and your compadres on here are absolutely in the minority.
I agree with most of what you are saying but with Gundy as coach, I’d be willing to bet he’ll have One less playoff appearance than he’s had conference titles in the last 19 seasons.
I don’t believe Gundy is our only problem, I believe we have some of the dumbest fans in football. Look at Michael and Robert they claim several on here think we should already be a blue blood while I’ve yet to see one post mentioned we should be a blue blood. Several on here think Gundy will start winning championships since OU is gone. Just go back and look how many times Gundy has finished second to OU in the conference.
Unlike Baylor and K State and TCU, OSU will stick with Gundy till it takes years upon years to compete.
I actually like the transfer portal. It requires coaches to be leaders and play the best talent or lose them. You are seeing teams turn around fast and you are seeing better distribution of talent. My guess on the future is it gets bigger with more parity. NIL is the one piece of this that needs some guidelines.
NIL: I hate it. But it’s necessary. I was a D-1 baseball player. We put a ton of hours in, just as all these athletes do. It’s a full time job. So I agree that they need some compensation. Now I agree it needs to have some better guidelines. NIL as an idea,……is a good thing. Just needs to be tweaked. Same thing with the portal. I absolutely HATE how the portal is right now. I’ve said many times that if you make a kid sit out a year, it’ll fix the portal problem & help with the NIL problem. If a kid has to sit a year……he’s not going to be nearly as quick to leave. And if a kid is t eligible to play for a year, the NIL dollars for that particular kid won’t be near as much either. Just my two cents
I agree with the athletes having a way to get paid. I do like the instant transfer policy though. It’s a business from my perspective and to keep the best talent you have to have the best environment for growth Development etc… Balancing out the talent should setup more opportunities for teams to compete every year not just blue bloods.
Lots of good discussion here but for me the issue is simple and it is the lack of a level playing field. Now I know that in the past that has always been an issue for any school that wasn’t a BB. However there were things that non-BB schools could do to mitigate the issues and be competitive. Other things like the expanded playoffs also had promise of helping non-BB schools with the level issue by allowing them to gain exposure in a way that would help with recruiting. Enter unregulated NIL with its potential for making things worse for the have-not’s than it has ever been and there is no easy counter to it other than to bring more money. OSU NIL money is never going to be remotely close to schools like Michigan et al. It gets even worse as NIL serves as a giant smoke screen that allows cheating to be easily accomplished, almost out in the open if you will. Much more than has been in the past. This is not good for OSU and IMO not good for the sport in general unless of course you are ok with only having the same 10 or so programs vie for the NC year in and year out and zero chance of schools like OSU ever being competitive for a NC. If this becomes the norm then I could see less televised games for teams like OSU because what is the point? Who will watch games that don’t mean anything?
My sentiments as well Bruce, but I think the NFL is different in that the owners NEED the other teams to survive. it is in their best interest. so there is a reason for subsidizing.
I don’t think Greg Sankey gives a rat’s ass what happens to any school of which he has no interest and in this system there is zero reason he should.
Media companies are already pinching pennies.
ESPN, Fox, CBS, AppleTV, et al couldn’t afford to keep the PAC12 intact, and that effectively strands a large portion of the country from the quantity of football historically they’ve had available.
What’s to say that next go around in 5 or so years there isn’t a complete restructuring into the mythical “super conferences”.
There is additional monies in Big 10 and SEC with teams like Purdue, NW, Minn, Rutgers, Vandy, and others. Super Conf’s could literally rank programs based on media draw and pay on a sliding scale.
“you are ok with only having the same 10 or so programs vie for the NC year in and year out and zero chance of schools like OSU ever being competitive for a NC. If this becomes the norm”
This HAS BEEN THE CASE BEFORE REALIGNMENT/NIL/PORTAL. IT HAS BEEN THE NORM. Why can’t you understand that!!! You’re acting like this is somehow a new thing. It’s not. Again, OSU & the entire new look Big 12 are historically “Have Nots”………yet they are going to be in a MUCH better place to get a seat at the playoff table going fwd than they have ever been. You keep ignoring that. Someone EVERY YEAR from the New Big 12 is going to get into the expanded playoff but yet……somehow it’s going to drive viewers away? Again dude….that’s simply being a spreader of a doomsday prophecy based on absolutely nothing. I bet you’re a lot of fun at parties.
irrelevant statement. Just Stop.
I’m 67 years old. I don’t go to parties
You say it’s irrelevant……yet you state it as something that’s GOING to happen……without realizing that ITS BEEN THAT WAY! It’s like running around & telling people that it’s going to get dark in about 3 hours.
Yea you are missing the point. In the past there has always been the potential, even it it’s is slight, to improve the situation. Given the nature of today’s environment that potential is at or close to zero. You need to look forward instead of using the past to support your narrative. Also as a BB fan you probably are unable or unwilling to walks in the shoes of an OSU fan so there is that as well. Lots here going against your arguments sorry.
What have you been smoking today jug ? Robert and I have never said we should be a BB !!
You and your son joy have said we have should already be in BB status , Maybe slow down on the drinking a little
