OSU Athletic Director Chad Weiberg's Job Status Still Reportedly in Question

So, he can do his due diligence on coaching search firms, but not coaches? What sense does that make? IDNGAF if people think this is harsh. I’ll die on this hill. This is bigger than Weiberg. I’ve been through this corporate nonsense, and my wife is going through it at her job. We have an entire executive level of people in America paralyzed or unable to make the decisions requisite for their positions doing this everywhere. No one having any skin in the game is actually bad. However, everyone is completely misrepresenting my point.

1.) How much credit does a guy get for hiring someone to find a coach for him?
2.) How does that make his job safe if the university can just retain the services of the same firm?

So, follow me here, I’m not saying he should be fired for using a firm, I’m saying that making good hires when you aren’t the guy producing the hiring pool is not much of a saving grace. If they are thinking of firing him for any reason, outsourcing your decisions to someone else isn’t much of a plus in his category.

Then maybe the person should be smart enough to say, “well….you hired them Chad!!!”

Why does it matter as long as it’s working? If you bring a person in to get a job completed to standard. Then why the hell would it matter how they did it if you placed no specific restrictions on how it should be done? Are you looking for something to complain about?

Why? Did you ever think perhaps it frees him up to do other things? Like speaking to donors, alums, and boosters about future plans for financial investments into the AD?

AND it’s getting even worse now because they’re all doing the same thing with A.I. I’m sure we’ll all be patting Weiberg on the back when he uses Claude instead of ChatGPT to hire his next coach. Or maybe the coach will be A.I. too. Maybe Weiberg will be too. Maybe I am right now.

Silverfield is a good coach. Memphis would’ve taken us behind the woodshed Gumby’s last two season’s. You think a HC should fix a program that’s been down 10+ seasons before this season? They just whooped the team that beat our behind!

Blah blah blah.

You are the king of hot takes. Next you’ll tell us the sky is purple. You like to rub against the grain here. I swear, sports fans spouting inane opinions on message boards and out loud at stadia are a considerable part of what’s ruining sports.

I don’t give two chits what Weiberg uses as long as he’s being successful at it. It’s becoming obvious that firing Gundy and hiring a young G6 coach with a younger staff was the right call. Something I’ve been wanting us to do for the last few years. Only someone like you would have an issue with a guy using whatever resources necessary to make something work .

Yes…you gotta stretch this one really far. I don’t see why using a consulting firm is an issue :man_shrugging:.

Well, I understand the sentiment. I think that we have had some pretty complex happenings concerning the athletic department of Oklahoma State.

We’ve literally had to navigate many and multiple deaths.

It’s worth remembering that Chad Weiberg bleeds orange. His very brother died on the OSU basketball plane crash. He is OSU through and through.

Any sentiment of being willing to get rid of him would be comparable to wanting to fire Eddie Sutton, not in an off year, but after taking us to the sweet 16 two years in a row.

It’s absolutely nuts.

I might add, if Weiberg was let go, what would be the effect on the mentality of those coaches Weiberg has hired?

I am not a Silverfield believer. Memphis has a significant resource advantage over the remainder of the AAC except maybe Tulane now that Houston, Cincy, and UCF are in the Big 12. He didn’t do anything meaningful in his 6 years, they finished 3rd, 7th, 8th, 4th, 3rd, and 6th. I think Arkansas has another bust on their hands. Can’t say I feel too bad for them though.

Pretty sure some of yall have never actually worked with consultants. Just because you use them doesn’t mean you automatically outsource all of your thinking. You CAN ask them to do everything and just roll with their work, or you can have it be a dynamic relationship where they are an extension of your staff.

Probably really really excited if the next AD is going to have a plan to fund their scholarships without the coaches needing to go fundraise. Lutz is probably coaching for his job, so he’d probably be nervous. Is there any example where an AD got fired and the new guy started slashing and burning successful coaches?

1.) Then get off message boards.
2.) Yeah, the thing ruining sports is the thing that has existed as long as sports has existed.

Trust me, I usually do. The problem isn’t a personal one. The problem with nonsensical opinions like some of yours is that while they used to exist in solitude, now they are propagated more frequently in stupid echo chambers which can have some influence.

It would be one thing if you weren’t doing your job and making terrible hires. That’s not the case though, at least yet. He also tried giving Gundy another shot even when it was looking bleak.

Agree with this concept. It’s like having a contractor.

Totally get what you’re saying. Those situations are undoubtedly more difficult and tragic, but I wouldn’t say more complex.

But, honestly, that point doesn’t matter as much as saying that Chad has faced and dealt with some real challenges.

I just worry what consequences might come with a Weiberg firing. (i.e. Morris going…)

Sorry to do this to you, but you’re being an idiot (and a jerk at the same time).

Here are the stats of Lutz compared with the 4 OSU coaches before him, over the same number of games (except Underwood for obvious reasons).

Lets see how he stacks up…

  • Total Win%? Worst
  • Big XII Win%? Worst
  • Postseason? Worst (tied with MB)
  • All this with portal changes that make fast turnarounds easier today than ever. Advantages the other coaches didn’t have.

But it’s not fair to compare Lutz to these coaching juggernauts. Boynton is the Nick Saban of CBB and Travis Ford is basically John Wooden reincarnate. I wish so badly that we could have Sean Sutton back on the bench.

What all these coaches have in common (outside BU)? They all got fired.

Lesson learned: If you’re going to be a condescending jerk to someone, you better be right. Or at least don’t be 1000% wrong.
