Years late and a dollar short, the powers to be running this university threw away another season not firing him at the end of last year. Mike Gundy was a good coach, he had his moments, but it has been blatantly obvious for many of us who have our eyes open and don’t buy into the idiotic argument of who can we get that is better that Gundy. He has been too set in his ways, pushed back on NIL instead of embracing the suck that is NIL and diving in head first. I look at the team, the offense, the lack of creativity and I see a guy who has been phoning it in, which might be fine if he was making 400K a year, but that’s not what he was being paid to coach this team. He deserves to be respected and revered by the fans and the University and I hope both entities allow that to happen at some point in the future..
Mistake. We have no potential for major NIL monies, a tiny town 60 miles from the nearest metropolitan areas (both with universities that compete for NIL revenue), and an SEC team down the road that can literally pick and choose its recruits. Who in their right mind would come here except for a mid major coach hoping to make a name for himself before he moves on in three years if he wins. And if he loses? Gone in two and the ring around the rosey begins. Oh! But we can get Zach Robinson (who has ZERO major college head coaching experience!)! Let’s hope. For all you Gundy haters out there, and for you brilliant minds that actually fired him, I hope you are happy.
Yea we have answers lol. A new era of OSU football has started today and a coaching search is moving forward instead of at the end of the year. We are ahead of schedule. Not talking for everyone but for me the process is exciting and don’t care how long it takes to find a coach as long as we are moving forward. As for you well sounds like you would weather not move at all. Cheers buddy!!! Only direction this program can go is up from here.
Couldn’t be more happy. Infact the boys and myself are going to celebrate with a cold gold after work. You invited if you want to join.
Read my response to bill18. I’m not saying it wasn’t time. I’m saying it’s a bad look. I agree that this was the last year. I disagree with the optics.
And there are many more ways to go than up from here.
And it’s “whether,” not “weather.”
My guess is Gundy wasn’t going to give em a choice on how this goes down so they just got it out of the way now to get a search going.
My assumption is they asked him to retire, he refused and Chad was stuck.
I don’t think it sours replacements. These guys in coaching understand it’s a cutthroat business. Plus, money and status speak - for any G5 coach this will be a big step up in both regards.
Yea I didn’t see it in time. I was responding to your first post.
I assume the BOR gave AD the ultimatum of getting rid of gundy or he would get axed also. It’s a money world and money won. I’m also sure that gundy’s son didn’t speed things up after that rant.
I’m thinking they offered to let him resign at the end of the season, and he didn’t want to a la Gary Patterson and TCU.
Who will care about this “bad look” besides you? Dude is getting 15 mill
Will have 0 effect or even cross the mind of potential candidates.
Dude we got smoked by Tulsa, not an SEC team.
It wasn’t just that we lost because of inexperience, bad coaching, or bad luck. We lost because their guys were bigger, faster, and hungrier.
You make fun of Stillwater… I live 4 blocks away from the University of Tulsa. Trust me, recruits would choose Stillwater every time over Tulsa. So how does an American team with 1/10 the budget do it?
There’s no excuses anymore. I’m sorry. I wish you were right
P.S. Vegas hasn’t touched the spread for Saturday since the firing. They see the same performance with and without Gundy.
Fair. Been there. Thanks.
Yes, I think you enjoy it. Otherwise there would be no reason to subject yourself and the rest of us to the endless nonproductive comments.
I guess we’ll see.
I agree that it’s sad to end this way, but it’s ending this way because Mike Gundy forced it to end this way.
Is he fired or just “relieved of his duties”? Might be cheaper to let him just hang around with his orange stapler.
I wouldn’t have agreed with firing him last year, but I would’ve understood. Firing your coach after three games and still owing a massive buyout is ridiculous. There’s no point in keeping a coach that you have no confidence in. There’s no point in firing a coach early. Someone said, “we can start the coaching search”. We don’t even have an AD. You can’t interview candidates until after the season anyway. All you can do is make a shortlist. You might get in touch with some agents through back channels, but there’s no shortlist because we don’t have an AD to make a shortlist. What are we doing?
I would suggest Gundy’s been coasting since way before 2022.
