It’s getting messy in Stillwater.
this is the only this relationship could end unfortunatly
Yes, but only because HCMG is so bullheaded. He can’t get out of his own way.
I’m not even saying he deserves a pay cut, but that rolling renewal has got to go. It took any and all power out of the administration’s hands. The program has only gone downhill since.
Mike Gundy is not the kind of guy that will go gracefully. His ending, if that’s today or a few years form now, is destined to be messy. He’s an egomaniac, but I’m not even sure it’s his fault. Anytime you give someone so much without any accountability (the rollover contract, etc.), you’re just setting things up to fail. Also, 20 years is probably just about the maximum length of time, if not too long, for someone to be the head coach at one place. It just usually doesn’t work longer than that.
As I have said before and I will say again, Mike Gundy seems like a good guy, but like all of us he has his flaws for sure. He has been loyal to this school, but he has also been very well paid in return. Unfortunately, as good of a coach as he has been, he has become way too inflexible and set in his ways, and has become far far too comfortable. I’ve felt for the last 5-6 years now that Oklahoma State needed fresh blood, as the conservative play calling, the lack of effort or at least perceived lack of effort in a lot of the game plans, the loyalty to certain players even when its a detriment to the rest of the team, and finally the miss fires of late in coordinator hirings/promotions. The saddest part of the whole situation is that Mike deserves a statue some day for what he has done for the university, but with the mishandling of this from both the powers to be at the University and Mike Gundy himself is only serving to hurt the University we all care about. If you get to the point where you give a guy an ultimatum like this and a deadline to make a decision, it looks disrespectful and causes chaos, something you never want with a football program, specially now in the age of the transfer portal. The right thing here would have been thanking the man for his years of dedication to OSU, but telling him we need to go in a different direction and then telling him he will get paid what he is owed, but asking him for the good of the program if he would be willing to take less than what he was owed.
I agree with a lot of what you have said, but coaches are not going to back down from their buyout clauses. That’s just industry standard.
then he should be fired with cause for his comments.
I knew his actions would get him at some point. How do they fire him for cause. Ask people in the dept. You cant preach “culture” in the media and then go and try to do your best “Holgerson” life. The day he equated all of us to trash is the day that he should have been fired. Mike has never been one of us. He has made millions off the university. Used a few flirtations elsewhere to get huge raises. He did a lot for the program, but his time has passed. You saw at FSU w Bowden, PSU w paterno, hell even OU w stoops. We need new blood. He will back down and take the “clipping” of the contract b/c he doesn’t want all the skeletons let out.
Mike already has a statue. It is south of town w/ the millions he has made off the program. Don’t make him a saint
Statue isn’t necessary.
Plenty of people who were not Saints have statues. If your unable or unwilling to at least give him credit where it’s due, then I’m not sure you would ever get it. As I said, I have been done with Mike Gundy the coach ever since Bob Stoops saved his job and re-punted the ball to Tyreek Hill. I am still however capable of seeing he has done a lot for the university, regardless of his salary or his flirtations with Tennessee to get more money. i can’t fault a guy for using a tactic I have used four or five times myself in my professional life.
If they fire him for cause I would imagine it’s for the damage his comments of us being poor losers caused to donor support.
Okay, so if Gundy ends up being out all of the sudden, who the heck are we bringing in?
Do we hurry and try to get someone in to keep the portal from exploding? Do we wait and see if Ohio State gets rid of Ryan Day or something like that? Do we get a current head coach? Do we hire a big time coordinator? Do we give Jim Knowles a HC shot?
What’s next?
Proving financial harm as a result of someones words or making a “for cause” argument for a poorly worded statement on Gundy’s part would be very hard to do in court. The regents would be fool’s thinking either of these would have a chance in hell of getting OSU out of the buyout.
Then you can pay his buyout and legal fees. Nice.
Please come coach for us, we’re in a bitter contract lawsuit with our old coach!
He has been an “egomaniac” since I first encountered him in 1986. It’s who he is.
If the BOR really fires Gundy at 5pm today like is being reported it will be one of the biggest Sh&t shows that could ever be convened by them for many reasons. For starters no one is going to want to come to a school with no coaches in place. No coaches worth their salt are going to want to come coach at OSU after they see how firing is managed. Blue bloods can sometimes get away with the irrational management of HC’s but we are not them. That’s just two reasons out of many. We are literately dumping gasoline on ourselves and smoking a cigarette. If they want to have Gundy step down they need to not be so stupid about it. It’s not that hard.
Can this football season get any more embarrassing. I didn’t think so, until today. Coach Gundy has been a positive for OSU for 20 years. He isn’t perfect. He is stubborn, head strong, egotistical. In other words he is like most of the people who have the title Head Coach.
I did not agree with many of his actions (i.e. recruiting, retention of assistants, NIL, transfer portal, etc.). Every time termination talks regarding the HC or staff started my question was “Who do you get to replace them?” I never received a valid answer. Only hearing “Anyone would be better”.
It appears the BOR have decided that “Anyone” is the correct answer. This situation is going to get more embarrassing and ugly.
I don’t expect Gundy to agree. I wouldn’t if I was in his position. Nor would many people. Anyone who says they would is not realistic. I expect he will be terminated “for cause”. Good Luck proving that in a court of law. That’s where this is headed.
I’m preparing for a period of irrelevant football for 2 or 3 years. Thank god for other sports like basketball, baseball, softball and others. Go Cowboys. Loyal and True.
