“Bring Doug home.” What a silly comment. Wrestling and golf are individual sports. Coaching them is a different animal than coaching football or basketball. John Smith was the best wrestler in the world when he was hired. He took over the best program in the sport. That’s a pretty easy transition. I know nothing about Mike Holder as a coach because he coached golf and frankly no one gives a crap about golf, especially college golf. Doug Gottlieb has zero experience. He has never been the best basketball player in the world. He didn’t even make the NBA. He’s never ran a multimillion dollar company. He’s never recruited players. It’s an absolute joke to even consider him.
I think our basketball NIL sucked these past few years. Is that because donors don’t want to donate or because they didn’t think Boynton would win anyways? I think it’s because they’d seen enough of Boynton’s poor coaching and thought NIL wouldn’t make a difference when the wheels completely fall off at the end of both halves and the 5+ minute scoring droughts every game. I suspect that boosters have indicated they’d make an investment into NIL with a new guy that they wouldn’t make with Boynton and that’s why he was fired this year.
If Doug wanted the job then Doug should’ve found himself a college basketball coaching job about 5 years ago to get some experience.

I don’t think NIL payments are included in university athletic P&L statements.
Forest for the trees. We aren’t any different financially then the ISUs and Texas Techs of the world. Yet those teams are competitive year-in and year-out with the same NIL constraints and for some reason we aren’t. I’m not expecting us to become Duke, Kansas, or UNC. But we should be on par with the ISU’s, KSU’s and other similar programs.

NIL cannot be run through the University. It is private individuals or companies that play players for a service or use of their name image of likeness.

Well, we are when it comes to raising NIL money for men’s basketball.
Donors/alums at TxTech, ISU, etc. are doling out more money than our donors/alums.
The admin gave Boyton one last gift by firing him before April 1st, when the payout would have been less. What moves are really doing to get made before the first two rounds of the tournament,. The money could have been used for other things.

I’d image it’s basically a silent commit by someone and it will be announced after their team loses.
Then we need a better fundraiser as our AD. I get that ‘technically’ the school doesn’t manage the NIL donations, but in reality, the AD could (or should) be telling our donors to route their donations to the foundation so that the NIL money is there. If we lack NIL money compared to our peers, then that is an indictment of the AD.
In major conference basketball, NIL is currently the main driver to attracting and retaining players. End of story. If we don’t figure out the NIL fundraising aspect, it really doesn’t matter which coach we hire.
Im with you 500k is nothing. But, how much of this mikes problem. I have yet understand how in 7 years no player inproved, with out more time played. With no offense scheme it left people doing at of one on one stuff.
Say 3 0r 4 years ago he had changed the stuff we all talk about, you think the nil would have been 500k.
Offense set cost us the most doing other teams runs. How many double digit leads have we lost in 7 years. Mostly from keep shooting 3’s and turnovers
It is amazing how literally no one he recruited improved during their time in Stillwater.
Likekele, Anderson, Boone, Walker, Thompson (I’m not sure if he was ever good to begin with) - all regressed during their time under Boynton.
You’re probably correct that it’s Boynton’s fault that the NIL budget was so small. I just worry that after paying the $7 million + buyout, there won’t be any money leftover for NIL, and we’ll be back in the same hopeless position.

I don’t think they make the move this year and especially before the buyout drops if they don’t have some committed NIL dollars from donors.

5 years to build is dinosaur thinking. This isn’t the find 'em in 8th grade and build a rapport. Have them sit on the bench as a freshman and build from there.
