Grantham adds another member to his defensive staff.
This is the first time that I have seen a DC pick all his assistant coaches. I’ve never seen this at OSU before. Jim Knowles didn’t do it. I also think, if we fire ALL of the current coaches, we lose most of the current recruiting class that we just signed. I realize that OSU was only about 60th in recruiting rankings but if we lose these kids, there are not many kids left who have not signed. I guess we can go the portal route, but it’s buying players and OSU is ranked 45th in NIL, so I don’t see a flood of talented players showing up in Stillwater. What a dumpster fire.
Well, Okstate had the lowest recruiting budget in the Big12 during 2022 (last year of data I could find) and averaged the lowest recruiting budget in the Big 12 2017-2022. While most want to blame Gundy, I think blame should be laid at the feet of the BoR who approve the dollars.
If Gundy wanted a bigger recruiting budget he would’ve gotten it. He doesn’t care enough to recruit that much.
Gundy returned the second most starters in the nation, and then turned them into an 3-9 (0-9) team. The issue goes much deeper than just the budget. If coaching is nonexistent, then the budget really doesn’t matter. Texas proved that for well over a decade.
I suppose you work in the athletic dept? You don’t know this……
And, Texas proved that you can’t fire a good coach, bring in the top coordinator in the nation or the hottest young coach in the nation and create the same success……
It doesn’t take much of a genius to figure it out. Our recruiting budget is by far the lowest in the conference. If Mike wanted more money to recruit there is a ZERO percent chance they wouldn’t give it to him.
Mack Brown went 22-16 his last three years at Texas, and he just got fired at North Carolina. That’s simply not going to cut it at a place like Texas. If Sark would’ve pulled off another 8-5 his third year at Texas he probably would’ve been gone. However, he went to the CFP last season, and he’s doing it again. Sark didn’t get fired for underperforming at USC either. There’s no reason for a coach to not be successful at a place like Texas.
Agreed. Instead, he wanted to give Dunn more money despite having only been in the top 50 in offense one time in the 5 years he was here . Let’s invest in chitty coaching, not better players . Dunn was the 15th highest paid OC in the country and he could barely score any points in the first half.
I think in this day and age looking at recruiting budgets is only part of the picture. Using them as and example of anything isn’t all that smart.
And it took Texas two high profile coaches and lots of underachieving 4- and 5-star recruits until they found Sark. Schools like Texas and a handful of others have the donor money to fire and hire until they find success. Okstate? Not so much.
So what do you use in the days of bending the knee to a recruit? In the era of NIL? It literally takes money to fly, visit, feed, make presentations to recruits. The more money you have, the more often you can follow up with recruits and the more recruits you can visit……simple, really.
This I agree with……but Dunn was the 27th highest paid OC in 2024 at $900k. That said, the offense has been vanilla since the hiring of Yurcich.
If you know a coach isn’t worth anything after three years then you don’t continue to hold onto him for another two years. Which is exactly what Gundy did with Dunn. In fact, they gave him a raise even though his performance as an OC was stagnant. That’s why Gundy is in the situation he is right now. They should’ve gotten rid of both Dunn and Dickey after the 2022 season.
That’s why you don’t hiring WR coaches as an OC or D2 coaches. Notice how both Dunn and Yurcich both got fired.
Precisely why looking at internal recruiting budgets alone is no longer a way to see the total picture.
Again, you don’t know that they wouldn’t have given him an increase in recruiting budget because he doesn’t like to recruit. Since you don’t work in the athletic dept, it’s hard to take your assumption of the situation…….Okstate doesn’t have the donor pool of the blue bloods you seem to expect out of the school.
You’re telling me the university can’t afford another half a million dollars for a recruiting budget? Yeah right dude get a grip. The most powerful man on campus would get the money if he wanted it. They would skimp elsewhere to provide for Mike if he made it known he wanted some extra money for recruiting.
That’s not even accurate. I mean, even OU went to the state for more money. Okstate doesn’t have the big donor pool and Oklahoma doesn’t have the larger tax base to pump into collegiate education. Gundy’s already in the pool, less than a handful, of coaches who’ve voluntarily given up portions of their contracts to help fund revenue sharing. It’s pompous and shows lack of understanding if you think they can easily throw out $500k or more above what they already spend. I’m not the one who needs to get a grip……
