The Top 5 Quotes from Mike Gundy's Pre-Texas Tech

Gundy talks the importance of getting a win, young players and more.

Hey, my U10 rec soccer team had a 2-6 record. But, we showed up every practice, go to work every day, practice and play hard. I need a spot on Gundy’s staff, it sounds like! As long as I show up and put in the time, I’m safe!

The only coach that would think this way of not getting younger guys reps. Not to ā€˜give up’ on the season but to try to win. there is no fire on this team and a lot of quit happened weeks ago, players aren’t the issue but coaching is. I get if a player is NFL bound not pulling him or even in consideration for a draft pick but the rest should be shuffled to see if they can get SOMETHING out of this squad.

We’re going with what gives us the best chance to win. – Gundy

So, he’s resigning?

I’m fully convinced the dude needs to go. Almost everything he says is completely tone-deaf. He is so out of touch with his own team and the reality of their situation.

ā€œI haven’t seen anything where it’s eating on them. I’m sure that there have been games they wish they would have done a better job.ā€

Jesus H. Christ - if we don’t have a single coach on the staff that is noticeably upset by this season, then Gundy absolutely has to go. If Dunn and Nardo are actually working 15 hour days and can’t do better than 3-7 with this roster and Gundy can’t see that as an issue, his coaching days have expired.

That combined with ā€œwe don’t put young guys in just to get them experienceā€ is just coaching negligence (or worse, apathy).

You sound like a perfect fit for our staff. How’s a seven figure salary with zero accountability sound?

Wait, first though - just make sure you don’t play any underclassmen over upperclassmen. Ever. No matter what.

The worst part is if you read between the lines he’s clearly implying that while the coaches haven’t been affected by the results, the players definitely have.

Rather than match that energy or encourage it, he’s commending the staff for its apathy.

ā€œBut it would be nice if we found a way to win the game,ā€

Weird….you found a way to go to the conference title game last season with the same exact roster, and now you can’t win a conference game? What do you think it might be Mike?

ā€œ If not, we won’t just put a young guy in just for experience.ā€

So let me get this straight. Your OC sucks and your QB keeps throwing interceptions. However, the guy next up in line hasn’t been given a decent opportunity to show anything at all. So how much is that experience helping you out so far Mike?

ā€œ Gundy was asked if he were to make changes to his staff, if any of that timeline would be determined by the busy start to December. He said he ā€œhadn’t thought about that kind of stuff.ā€

You know what……I believe ya Mike!!! Because you’re the type of guy that’s proven to everyone that you’ll continue to hold onto chitty coaching in hopes of proving a point to stroke your own ego. I’d say your 0-7 conference record is not exactly proving your point, but we already know you think it’s better to lose than to change :man_shrugging:.

ā€œThey work. Coaches are consumed with 14-, 16-hour days and preparation. They’re creatures of habits, like robots during the week. We’re all the same. We hide in our work. We go to work in dark, and we come home in the dark.ā€œ

Wow!!! That’s crazy. I’d think your OC would come up with something better than a middle school caliber offense, or maybe finding space for the best RB in college football. Maybe your DC would finally figure out after six or seven games why his defense continues to be the worst P4 one in the country.

I’d also wonder if you catch yourself reviewing the game plans from your staff before game day on one of those 14-16 hour days. I would guess you probably don’t though. Considering you’ve consistently talked in your post game pressers about how you didn’t like the game plans :man_shrugging:.

Honest question for discussion — realistically (no Zac Robinson/Todd Monken pipe dreams) who would we all like to see replace these guys if we actually do see some heads roll? (OC, DC, HC?)

Come on man what’s with the rational question? can’t you see there is a Gundy hate session going on here that is going to fix everything.

Hard to believe this is the state of the program. Is he really this oblivious? Coach, thank you for all you’ve done, but please retire and let us move on.

Carson and Colby covered this really well on the latest pod. Definitely worth a listen.

Is Mike a Gundy a great coach, probably not. Is Gundy a great recruiter, probably not. Can Gundy be a little tone deaf, probably. With that said, Gundy has authored the greatest stretch of successful football in OSU history, and it’s not even close.

The Gundy experiment works because he is a Cowboy. Called OSU his New York Yankees job, although he has wavered a little bit here and there.

Like it or not, Oklahoma State will never be a destination head football coaching job. The average stay here is 5.4 years. If you take Gundy out of the equation the average drops to 4.7 years.

The minute Gundy steps out the door this job returns to being a stepping stone position and we immediately return to the days of a hire a guy that improves the program in four or five years and moves on or a hire a guy that does not improve the program in four or five years and is fired. In other words, mostly bad football.

I prefer stability and think Gundy has earned the chance to rebuild.

While I can’t say I TOTALLY agree simply because we’ve been nationally relevant for a decade or so…and I wear orange-colored glasses everywhere I go. BUT…that being said…our basketball team was in the FINAL FOUR in 2004 - won the conference season and tourney! Then Coach Sutton goes in '05…and here we are…
Can that happen in football? I would HATE to think so. I know there are SO many ā€œbill18ā€ and ā€œmatt14ā€ guys out there who just hate all over Gundy because we’re ā€œsettling for mediocrityā€ and just dismiss the fact that Gundy’s brought us to hitherto unknown heights as a program…but has only one conference title. I know those arguments - and I get it…to a degree. But man, I DO NOT want to see our football program take a Travis Ford/Underwood/Boynton spiral!!
We’re having a bad year - a difficult stretch. But we were literally JUST in the conference championship game. We beat ou 2 out of 3 years (which the Gundy haters hate to recognize for some reason). Give Mike another season to right the ship - THEN hand it off to someone who will keep us rolling. Now, if he doesn’t change some coordinators in the offseason and we run this same group out…I may have a different song. But, for now, I trust he knows what he’s doing. You know why? He’s proven it…for YEARS! ā€œAdapt, react, re-adapt, aptā€ - that’s what I always say!
GO POKES!!

Does anyone seriously, seriously still believe in this man?

Next year is going to be even worse. We’re losing what talent we have and just who the hell wants to play at OSU right now if they have any other options? OSU is about to be relegated to the trash heap of college football, and its Gundy’s fault. There’s no sense in suffering through another 3 or 4 seasons of this just to give that man a chance to right the ship. He cannot do it.

There is NO LIGHT at the end of the Gundy tunnel. This does not get fixed with him in charge. Period.

WSU OC, UNLV OC, or BSU OC all look pretty good to me.

I’m fine with giving Gundy some time to fix this mess if he fires quite a few of these bum coaches we have on payroll, hires proven up and comers, and fixes his goddamn attitude towards fans. If he wants to run it back with Dunn, Dickey, and Nardo he can hit the unemployment line with them.
