Gundy talks Utah, the running game and more.

“ “We ran the ball well Saturday when we had an equal number or a half-man disadvantage. We didn’t run the ball well when they had one or two people extra there.”

  1. It’s Tulsa
  2. Figure something else out
  3. He still needs to fix the running game

He gets delusional a few times a year. Gets that wired outburst and starts saying wired stuff.

got the W tho…

Me: Coach, I’m a big fan of you. I support your program financially for 20+ years. You are paid a lot of $’s for solutions. Certainly a solution for the running game exists?
Grundy: Yes. Correct!
Me: So, you are either setting up Utah for new way to deploy OG? Or, You have no answer, and it’s Bowman pulling a rabbit out hat every week and another lost opportunity season ahead of us?
Grundy: Yes. Correct!

Love this site, and the well written articles as well as your collective attention this place has brought our boys. Good stuff man.

I must however disagree with the beginning of #3. Ollie Gordon won us the overtime game against Arkansas. Almost single handedly ( as a skill player can anyways. )
Yes the game was baffling for both sides, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

But for all the rightness with #3’s words, I would call his application to our offense as “Clutch” more than described. Just sayin.

Go Pokes!

Because we didn’t figure out until overtime to stop running him through brick wall :man_shrugging:.

His work there was great, but wasn’t single handed. Great pass from bowman, it was a narrow window he threaded and the line held for Bowman to be able to throw .

Against Tulsa!!! They might be lucky to win four games from what I’ve seen. It’s amazing to me we have an OC that makes a mil a year, and can’t figure out until he’s into the fourth or fifth game of the season how to take any pressure off his QB.

Well not being sacked takes pressure off of him eh ?

Until the opposing defense that’s good enough decides to put pressure on you half the game. We haven’t really faced a good team yet. So I’d say this game will be a good test on the quality of our pass protection.

Hey champ,

If they do that, they’re going to free up Ollie.

A bunch of money dropped on Oklahoma State today. Speculation is that Cam Rising isn’t playing.

You have more faith in Dunn’s play calling than I do.

Hey champ,

It has little to do with play calling. If Utah goes after Bowman, the run will be open. He doesn’t have to creatively call anything. I will acknowledge that he hasn’t pivoted to more run calls even after the defense backs off, but if your assertion is that Utah is coming for Bowman from the whistle, then the early runs will be more effective. If they don’t, then the passing game should continue to be wide open.

He can’t even run basic schemes and concepts efficiently no matter what. The only time that works for him is if he’s playing a team that barely has a pulse. Like I said, you have more faith in Dunn’s play calling than I do. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong, but I’m not counting on it.

Not sure if you noticed it. You said Dunn’s play calling still kind of sucks when it comes to running the ball, and at the same said the early runs will be effective. So exactly what are you trying to say?

In all honesty. I believe Utah WANTS Bowman to be the guy that beats them. If the Utah DC is worth a crap he’ll realize early on that if Dunn is still running the same nonsense with Ollie he doesn’t need to stack the box. If OSU has trouble run blocking on basic schemes anyway then what good is it to stack the box if it’s not needed?

Just drop six or seven in coverage and force Bowman to make throws with heavier coverage. Bowman certainly isn’t going to burn the defense with his speed. So why not? We may not have given up any sacks yet, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be punting more often either. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t trust our pass coverage either.

Hey champ,

Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit, is it? I gave two scenarios:

1.) The defense will key in to get to Bowman, like you said. In this case, the box won’t be stacked. Ollie will get loose without a ton of creativity.
2.) They will do what every other team has done and stack the box to stop Ollie. The passing game will be open and we will continue to do what we have been doing.

Your new assertion that Utah doesn’t have to stack the box because Dunn can’t execute a run game is absurd. Ollie Gordon was the leading rusher in the country last year under Dunn. Even if he isn’t the world’s most stunning offensive mind, he clearly has had proven success with an almost identical current roster. I didn’t say he couldn’t do it. I said that, later in games, the running game looks more open but he hasn’t gone back to it, mostly because the passing game was working so well.

If you had said that Utah’s defense is so elite that they won’t need to stack the box and can still give Bowman problems, that would be a logical concern. I don’t know if it’s true, but it would at least make sense.

Apparently reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit either. Tell me where I mentioned creativity? The problem is I didn’t. Because Dunn doesn’t know what creativity means. I believe I said “he can’t even run basic schemes and concepts no matter what”. I can already tell you don’t watch the games.

Look at my comment above. Again, you don’t need to stack the box if the opposing OC keeps running the basic scheme in the first half that every opposing coach in the conference already has figured out. Especially when his OL admitted in another article they can’t execute it properly. This is the #12 team in the country. It’s not an FCS, G5, or low tier SEC team.

Yep, and this year (so far) he’s lucky to get to 3.5 yards per rush. Is it Ollie, Dunn, Dickey, or the OL?

Where’s the proof so far? Figuring out in OT that giving Ollie space should’ve been a given in a first half. You don’t need to pay someone as the 15th highest paid OC in the country to figure that out.

He hasn’t gone back to it because what he’s trying to do clearly isn’t working. He doesn’t have a choice but to pass. As I said in an earlier post. Why are we not running any trap or outside zone?

It’s not about Utah being elite. It’s about Dunn being incompetent for a majority of the time during the game. You should’ve noticed this during the Arkansas game. Dunn was largely incompetent up until about midway through the third quarter. We’re playing a top 15 team Saturday.

Not to be too critical of Dunn. There are at least a couple of games during the year where he doesn’t seem incompetent. Hopefully this is one of them. However, that’s typically after we suffer a loss. I don’t trust Dunn until I actually see him do something.

I’ve heard lots of analysis on what Utah is likely to do. Some say they will do what everyone else has done and stack the box and dare us to pass. Some say Utah has an additional advantage over everyone else who has stacked the box so far because they have 3 or so very good corners who can cover one on one making the extra run defender not much of a disadvantage as one would normally think. Not sure that I buy into this totally because of our exceptional receiving core, ohhhh and wait we have TE’s that we actually throw the ball to now too!!. One more thing is that I expect that the coaching staff has spent an inordinate amount of time getting ready for this game, they knew when the schedule came out that this game was going to be important and probably started planning back then. Because of that I expect them to be ready scheme wise, of course I’m sure that Utah has had similar thoughts so both teams will be well prepared. It should be a good game. Of course I must close in saying that I have probably put the jinx on us by saying all of this and we’ll end up being down 21 points to zip in the first half of the first quarter and I’ll be downing my third beer and rage quitting the TV lol. Such is the life of the OSU football fan. Go Pokes!!

Hey champ,

You really do just have four lines.

You’re all over the place. First, they can’t execute. Ok, but they did last year. No personnel has changed. They obviously can execute. You asked where the proof was. It was last season.

You said it wasn’t a creativity issue, then you mentioned other schemes they should be running. Obviously, it is then. You’re so thick, it’s hard to even take you seriously as a person.

Then you asked whose fault it was. It largely falls on Dunn, could be more Ollie than we want to think. However, the biggest change is how defenses are playing the run. You’re obsessing over the run game, but what are the main reasons you run the ball?

1.) Wearing down the opposing defense.
2.) Controlling the pace and the clock.
3.) To keep the defense honest.
4.) Most importantly, to open up the pass.

One is a problem. Two can be somewhat mimicked with the short passing game. Three is moot because opposing defenses are playing run on every play. Four is already happening because they’re selling out on the run, we’re in the position now where we’re trying to pass to open up the run and they still aren’t going for it even after they’re getting gashed. What does forcing the run give us? If they’re putting 8 in the box, they’re already giving us most of what we want from the run.

If Bowman struggles like he did against Arkansas, we’re in trouble. If he stays cool, he’ll have one on one looks all day. I don’t like the game on Bowman’s shoulder because he can get rattled at times, but it is what we’re being given.
