Three Things I Learned from Oklahoma State's Win over South Dakota State

The Cowboys checked some boxes during their Week 1 win.

I am still very concerned about our run game blocking and the big plays we gave up on defense. I thought our offensive line would wear them down eventually but it never happened. We were playing a Division II school. No holes for Ollie and crew to run through. All the hype about our offensive line was disappointing first game. 3.3 yard a carry! Wow!! Also the defense is giving up the big plays - also very concerning - we’re is Wright? What is our defensive passing coordinator been doing the last 12 to 15 years? Again Gundy trying to make a statement with Nardo. I know he is liked by the players but…. As we move into the season I believe we are going to be disappointed with Kendall Daniel move to LB. Anyway, I root for them like crazy and what them to reach their goals - we have the talent but I just don’t know if we have the coaching to get us their - Offensive Line Coach Duffy ans Nardo…

We make so many changes that we can’t solidify our defensive positions and assignments. Kendall Daniel’s has went from learning a 3-3-5 last season to now learning how to be a LB? We spend more time changing stuff and HOPING it works rather than refining what we’ve already established when it comes to the defense. I’ll say it again. Put a truth serum in Gundy and he misses Knowles big time.

Also, this happens all the time. We averaged 1.9 yards per rush against Missouri State three years ago. That’s what’s wrong with our coaching staff as a whole. They’re not going to change anything until they’re forced into a disastrous performance in front of thousands. For whatever reason, Dunn seems to think if you keep the same play calling that the other coaching staff will change their mind and do something different on defense :man_shrugging:.

I didn’t think the overall performance was bad. I do agree with you giving up the chunk plays and rushing for 3.3 a pop against an FCS school will get you beat by a lot of teams.

Hey champ, let’s not get too doom and gloom after one game. The offensive line kept Bowman clean the whole game, so pass protection was excellent. He had days to throw. He looked way more comfortable than last year, no flushing the pocket early, no backfoot ducks, he even had room to scramble for yards for a guy who is essentially a statue. Biggest improvement over last year by far. Yes, I would’ve liked to have seen a better YPC, but some of that was driven down late game where we were running clock and running straight up the middle into a very disciplined (yes, FCS, but b2b FCS champs with a huge undefeated streak) defense. I don’t know that we were throwing out all the wrinkles in our run game.

The chunk plays were a bit more concerning. Korie Black is a black hole, so it’s an issue of getting the rest of the secondary tightened up. It’s the unit I think everyone had the most question marks about going into the season. Maybe it becomes a season-long issue, but maybe Nardo earns his money and figures it out. Also, like the offense, I doubt we threw every scheme at an FCS opponent we were dominating.

Tl;dr Don’t doom spiral after a solid win.

I learned about the enduring power of friendship

Hey Champ,

OSU had 171 yards of total offense at the half. Also, OG had 11 rushes for 47 yards (4.2 per rush). So this naive notion that OSU was just simply trying to run down the clock isn’t going to work. That’s not exactly very impressive against a FCS school. The best running back in the country should have better stats than that against an FCS. You better hope we don’t play that stupid game against Arkansas. Just admit we had issues running the football most of the game :ok_hand:.

While I can admit it’s a solid win against a good FCS school we’re going to have to be a lot better than that if we have any chance of making the CCG this season.

Knowles is gone. Get over it. SDSU was a team that allowed 89 yards a game last year rushing. They played to stop the run If Dunn can hang 44 every game ( one TD dropped by Stribling) I’ll take it We just better be ready for Petrino’s offense. The chuck plays bother me too but you try and correct it. I’m sure Gundy is aware of it … lol

It’s FCS dude!!!

Yep, and they told him not to play musical chairs against South Bama and he did anyway. You guys never learn.

Impressed by Bowman, the offensive line giving Bowman time, the receivers, and the kickers.
Shocked seeing Jackrabbit receivers in the open with no defenders near them. We got lucky their QB was rusty. Petrified about our secondary. Lack of holes for Ollie is worrisome. Nardo is a question mark. Dunn is not the right guy for the job. Based on just one game, I still think we drop 4 games. Teams are going to be throwing against us, big time.

You don’t think their first priority was to stop the run ? If you don’t you’re bigger moron than I thought. FCS. sure but good enough to not be beaten in 29 games. There are teams in FCS that can play better ball than Temple and Houston.
See how much criticism you can accomplish tomorrow

It’s FCS dude!!! They would be considered one of the lower tier teams in our conference,

I’m not going to get excited about teams we should beat. I’ll be excited if we can finally prove we can win another conference title.

I don’t know about that I saw a solidly called game last Saturday, Also have watched/read a lot of post game analysis and you are in the minority with this take. SDSU was solidly coached team (BTB Nat champs) and Dunn held his own. So for me I’m giving him a pass for now. Now on to the next game as you are never better than your last one.

Hey champ,

The team exceeded your expectations by 17 points. If you weren’t just trolling, you should be excited by that.

Look for the good in life. Until next time.

Ask KSt about them. SDSU went in to their house and beat KSt when Snyder was there 5-6 years ago so yea they can play with some teams in a bunch of conferences

These first couple of games are kinda Traps like yeah you beat them they’re an fcs team. Breaking a 29 game streak is a cool thing . They beat some guys that know how to win. How many years do we have to go back to get to a cumulative 29 wins for Pine Bluff ?

Now if we beat Arkansas do we say yeah they’re SEC but a down SEC team ? If we lose to Arkansas we lose to a down SEC team ?

Also if we win can we chant FCS FCS?

We only change when disaster strikes. I imagine it’ll be the same this season. I’ve been saying this since he’s been the OC. Now in year 5 as an OC and nobody has any interest in hiring him elsewhere. I wonder why?

I never said I was upset by the margin of win. The only things I mentioned was giving up the chunk plays and our inability to run the ball even before halftime. Which you mentioned was late in the game btw. So who’s wrong here?

And K State can win the conference two or three times while we can’t.

So what does that mean other than you repeating the same thing for the 315tth time
You just got proved wrong and you come back with this crap :man_shrugging:

Hey champ, what I said were the late runs drove the YPC down. Your stat showed that the YPC dropped by about a yard from halftime to game end, so I was correct. I also said some vanilla run scheming probably hurt us and that their D is disciplined.
