Talking through the past two days.
Man. All the talk of Gundy being selfish and then he takes a paycut.
He was making 7.75 million, wonder how much was restructured for NIL purposes. I’m thinking he dropped to about 5.5 million and bonuses if he wins championships and wins playoff games. That gives over 2 million for players.
Solid take there Marshall. It Gundy walks and takes $25m, or we get into an ugly legal battle, OSU football would be wrecked for years. Now he gets a chance to redeem himself.
Arizona State was 3-9 last year, now conference champs. Let’s do that.
No lie honestly I’m worried, I’m hoping the OC hired can assemble his own staff and develop the QBs also improve the o’line. I believe our QB room is loaded and need a guy who builds around them. Defense hoping we go back to the 4-2-5 because most of the defense/type players are 4-2-5 guys and still know the system. Nardo had no clue about the 4-2-5 running 3-3-5 concepts with it.
Honestly don’t think he had a choice. I wouldn’t want to be forced out with a 3-9 record and I’m not even taking shots. If I was going to be forced out I’d probably like to be 8-4 or better if I was Gundy. I’m just hoping the god complex personality is over with. I never wanted him fired but just to wake up and realize Dunn isn’t cutting with. We’ve been totally blest with great talent to make up for poor game planning in the past.
He absolutely had a choice. Take his $25 million and retire or take his $25 million, be an analyst for a year, and take a new HC job.
Gundy’s ego is too ■■■■big to go out on 3-9. Also I can’t imagine the university is threatening firing for cause if they don’t have a cause they believe would work to get out of paying him.
Hey champ,
He doesn’t have to go out on 3-9 because he could just get another job later.
The university is either bluffing, stupid, or it was misreported.
1.) They didn’t immediately fire him. They offered a renegotiation.
2.) He suffered no disciplinary action.
How are you going to argue that he committed a fireable offense if you’re still willing to work with him and didn’t do anything when it happened?
- Officer Bob was caught doing drugs on duty.
- Did you fire him?
- Nope.
- Suspend him?
- Nope.
- Then what happened?
- When it comes time to renew his employment contract, we’re going to renegotiate a 20% cut of his salary or else we’ll fire him for cause!
He would’ve gone out on 3-9 at OSU and his ego is too big for that. There is zero chance his ego is allowing him to go out with a pathetic ass limp noodle season like this. Also you don’t think the university had input from lawyers saying that if it came down to it they had enough to get away with firing for cause? Yeah I would place a large wager they felt confident they can get his ass if came down to it.
Here’s hoping Gundy can break his addiction to shopping the bargain rack for coordinators.
All a matter of perspective I suppose. I see it as he had to renegotiate because he didn’t like the other option. So that seems like “disciplinary action” to me.
Per my sources (my neighbor’s dog), Keith Patterson’s Abilene Christian Wildcats lost in the playoffs yesterday. He should be named Defensive Coordinator today.
Gundy has multiple very good choices, how many of us would scoff at walking into the sunset with 25mil in their pocket and that is just one of several good options. My guess is that he wants to continue to coach at OSU and is willing to compromise to do it, he is not being forced into it because he has no other good choices, that is simply untrue. He is compromising because he still wants to coach at OSU.
They could’ve made it a drawn-out legal headache. They wouldn’t have a case, though. Even in “right to work” states where you can supposedly fire people whenever you want, you’re going to get nailed to the wall every time if you don’t have the documentation. For instance, if a worker’s employment review is stellar for years and the company fired that employee for performance, they’re going to get nailed to the wall. It would be so easy to prove they didn’t fire for cause and were just using it as a negotiation technique. It was a bluff or threat to draw it out in court.
I would imagine all they would have to do is have a list of the donors that said they were pulling funding based on Mikes comments and had a case built in financial harm to the university. I’m no lawyer but I would imagine the university would’ve gotten the go ahead by their team of lawyers that they could pull it off if they wanted to take it that way.
But they’re willing to renegotiate and keep him on? He actively hurt the university, but they renegotiated? He actively hurt the university and he wasn’t suspended even one game? Actions don’t match the claim.
Some rogue regent almost cost the school a lot of money and PR.
I have had my issues with Gundy, the assistant coaches and the team. They are all responsible for this year’s fiaco. They all failed at one time or another. The biggest failure now is the Board of Regents trying to exercise their power. To air this in public was a colossal failure. It was rumored one donor had 13 mil to buyout Gundy.
Here’s my suggestion. Give it to NIL. Find great assistant coaches, go big in the portal, recruit top tier (4 & 5 star) players, provide the resources to compete and develop. Act like a blue blood, if you want to be a blue blood. Do what Boone wanted for years.
You would have to have faith Gundy would use that 13 mil to get 4-5 star players. From what I have seen he rarely makes an effort to land a 4 star kid. Hell that DL kid from Durant that’s committed to Oregon wasn’t even offered by OSU. Until someone forces Gundy to bust ass on the recruiting trail and in the portal what’s the point of donating big money for NIL?
A donor offered the 13 mil to fire Gundy. It’s not Gundys money. The smart play would be for the donor to donate to NIL. If Gundys new agreement is to do a better job with NIL to use for recruiting. using the portal, and to get better assistants and players I’m all for it.
