Again it would be highly unlikely that you could use what other people do as cause against Gundy. Gundy didn’t make them do what they did, he has no control over them. Donors can pull funding for any reason, maybe they just don’t like him, who knows. One would have a better chance of using something like Gundy’s hiring decisions as “Cause” something he has control over. Of course this would only have a chance of working if the administration told Gundy not the make the hire.
Don’t think for a moment that Gundy wasn’t the one who made it public.
Good for him.
If I was expected to maintain a certain standard, and then I give my boss the middle finger, trash my support, and then cap it off by losing the company money while continuing chit performance, I’d expect my boss to probably want to restructure my contract or perhaps even fire me
.
You might want to tell Gundy to go and learn from Kenny Dillingham over the summer then.
I agree. He would’ve been stupid enough to fight the university. OSU has more money than some people might realize.
Ok, but he didn’t have to. He held all the cards here.
How? I’d like to know what all those cards were. Please enlighten us.
A $25 million buyout is a pretty nice trump card.
If Gundy didn’t really want to coach, didn’t care, only cared about himself and the myriad of other stupid claims internet idiots are making as if they really know then the buyout would have been a great option and I’m pretty sure he would have gone that way. Instead he compromised on pay and autonomy so he could stay and coach. That says all that needs to be said.
A $25 million buyout was going to be possible with $13 million provided by one donor. Instead, rather than get rid of Gundy. That money could be put towards NIL resources. It’s actually the donors that hold all the cards. Because now if Gundy wants to continue he has no excuses left.
It was Gundy that retained Dunn after 2022. It was Gundy that hired a D2 DC. It was Gundy that only got eight players from the portal after the 2021 season. It was Gundy that said they weren’t changing. It was Gundy that called his supporting base losers. It was Gundy that refused to change his QB situation.
At what point do you start pointing at the actions and inactions of the “CEO” of OSU football and hold him accountable for them? The deal was structured to where he’s not going to be a payroll bandit any longer, and will be held accountable further. He actually had no choice. Either change or we’ll find someone that will. The difference between Gundy and the donors is that the donors are willing to work with Gundy, rather than act like a toddler that thinks he’s the smartest person in the room.
It’s actually a checkmate move by the donors. Because now Gundy better be worth the value that he (and others like you) say he is. Now the donors can say they gave Gundy a chance to prove his worth. Also, one of my relatives founded the Paddle People and graduated in 2003. He still maintains great sources at OSU. The $13 million source by a donor is a true story.
Hey champ,
You talk out of both sides of your mouth all the time and don’t even realize it.
So… we need to save money on Gundy’s salary, but also, we had an extra $25 million sitting around to throw at him to leave. We should use the $25 million to bring in talent, then. Instead of Alan Bowman, we could’ve had a 5 star talent for that.
It’s not some kind of “win” for the school or the donors to spend $25 million on a guy to not coach. For Gundy, it was win/win. Keep his job or get a $25 million payday for no work. Those are both good outcomes. Let’s say you believe Gundy is bad for the program and he’s a detriment, fine. Again, it is not a win to have to flush $25 million that you could spend on other things to get him to leave even if you believed it was necessary. If my HVAC goes put tomorrow and I have to drop a lot of money to replace it, I didn’t win because I addressed the problem. There are a ton of other things I’d much rather spend that money on. I mean, geeze, Arch Manning would probably come play here for $25 million. That’s an NFL salary. Stupid donors doing stupid things and thinking they know what’s best for the program is why Texas was in the toilet for 15 years.
Anyway, yes, when you win either way, you’re playing with dealer money and you have the leverage. You either win big or you win bigger.
Texas is just one. TAMU also comes to mind as well. I’m sure there are others.
You return the second most starters in the country from a team that won 10 games, and made the conference championship last season. Why would you all of a sudden jump the gun on NIL at the beginning of the season with that kind of roster? You’ve failed to understand this season was a total coaching failure.
The fans, donors, and administrators all see that was the most serious problem. Which is why Dunn and Nardo are both gone. Also, based on how our portal situation is currently going, and the fact we hired a guy that has been fired but has “experience” doesn’t give too many people much confidence in Gundy right now.
For the donors. It was not screw the program completely and establish control over the HC. Call it a win/win if you want, but Gundy is not going to have the free reign he once did. I think Gundy wants to keep coaching. The donors told him if he wants to continue he’s going to be following some new rules. This was a situation where the donors are walking around with the big stick and letting Gundy know they can get rid of him and go get there own Kenny Dillingham if they really wanted to. You forget Gundy has always backed down once the water has gotten hot enough.
Texas won the Big 12 last season and they’re in the playoff this season. A second year HC at Arizona State just won the Big 12 and is in the playoff after going 3-9 last season. I’d say donors aren’t completely stupid.
Hey champ,
You just can’t help talking out of both sides of your mouth… Every. Freaking. Time.
You realize none of this follows any sort of logical train of thought, right? Everything’s going horrible because Gundy is still here, but the donors are in control now, and donors are super sharp.
They were either stupid to keep a coach that has lost the locker room, public faith, and prestige or their meddling is why things aren’t going right now. I don’t even care which of those scenarios you think it is. Either way, they don’t come off like they made good decisions. They kept a coach that is radioactive or (more likely) they made radioactive or they’re calling all of these bad shots you’re calling out.
And yeah, great… Texas turned it around 15 years of irrelevant underachieving despite having the biggest brand in the biggest football state and having more resources than almost every other college program, but they consistently got upstaged by little brother OU and were even getting shown up by OSU more often than not despite several high profile coaching changes. Their turnaround now probably has more to do with how they can leverage their money into directly paying players instead of paying coaches, upgrading facilities, etc.
Yes it does. They’re giving Gundy a chance for improvement. I imagine the expectations will be 6-6 with a retooled roster of what he can currently get. Considering the portal closes in less than three weeks. In reference to confidence, I’m merely speaking of the fanbase. This is simply his last shot to right the ship and turn OSU into a CFP contender, and not become the old Kansas. I personally don’t think he’ll win the conference ever again, but some seem to think he will. Also, you left out Arizona State’s turnaround on purpose. You are just one of those guys that’s fine with 6-6. Just admit it.
Hey champ,
So… you’re going to help him improve by having a big public pissing match with him right before the portal opens and tell everyone you’re giving your coach one last chance and telling everyone he’s not really in charge anymore? I’m sure that assures a lot of prospects and causes no negative recruiting against. Might as well fire him. This board of regents is dumb.
What am I supposed to say about Arizona State? Did they publicly fight with their coach and undermine him as a show of brilliance?
If you think the administration was wanting this to go public then you certainly haven’t paid much attention to what Gundy says AND does in the past. In order to have Gundy improve you have to save Gundy from himself. How many coaches go 0-9 when returning the most starters in the conference? Not even Bob Simmons could be bad enough to accomplish such a thing.
If that’s the result, it really doesn’t matter if it becomes a public pissing match or not during portal season. Last time I checked, Gundy is offering people from Elon Musk U and NW Piss State. Of course, Gundy never has been a huge fan of going after high profile players even when given the opportunity to do so. It wasn’t the donors or administration that hired Dunn or Nardo either.
The BoR made a checkmate move for the future. Gundy is now going to be given enough resources to make the program a contender for the future or given enough rope to hang himself. If you keep going 0-9, or 6-6 to be honest, then there won’t be any prospects worth a piss that are going to come play for your loser program and self-defeating coach.
No, their coach created a plan for NIL and studied how to build a P4 program that’s not a BB. He didn’t try intentionally pissing off his fan base, donors, or administrators at every turn. Sometimes if you try to build bridges, be humble, and not act you’re the smartest person in the room. Others might actually try to support you without any backlash needed
.
Hey champ,
It’s true. You really were born without self-awareness. When you look in a mirror, do you recognize it as a reflection of yourself or do you see the fat, bitter crap sack looking back at you and say, “I would hate to be that guy instead of the suave ladies man that I know I am”.
