Transfer Portal Tracker 2023: Who's Coming and Who's Going for Oklahoma State Football

You guys seem to really like Rangel. So, do you want Bowman back for another year or do you want Rangel under center?

If we are choosing QB’s I rather have someone from the portal, Brandon Weeden’s doppelganger would be nice, who’s better than both Rangel and Bowman. Assuming Zane Flores hasn’t reached superstar status yet.

You really have to put him on ignore or read his babble. He gets louder as long as the sauce lasts, then he disappears for days trying to get over the hangover  he never adds anything positive

I hope we move on from Bowman. He made a few plays for us but I promise he’s throwing the ball away the first sign of getting sacked Way too slow. We need a qb that can run also. I expect Rangle to portal even if Bowman doesn’t get his 7th year :flushed:
I hope Leon can get his year to come back. Dude could be lethal. Presley comes back ? We need a good backup for him

I never understood why Bowman, who is not mobile, would not just be a drop back passer in a drop back passer offense. If he can’t run, then throwing must be his strong suit. So he shouldn’t be scrambling and throwing the ball away anyway. He has an arm. I don’t think the coaches utilized him properly.

I am thankful Stutzman did not play against us. We may not have beat them with him in there. He is a stud. He finished the season playing hurt so was not as good as his potential. He took over games.

Gabriel seemed soft at times. Very talented but inconsistent. Strange.

Happy to see Oline returns announced. They were solid this year. If they return and we get good OL recruits for depth, running backs and QBs and receiver recruits will all see they can be successful. That’s awesome. Maybe it will affect some defense players too. Nick Martin?

This should be interesting recruiting with OU and UT gone. We have the opportunity to be that next team to step up and win championships. That should also bring in great players.

I don’t think many coaches have the portal/NIL/redshirt games/ new recruiting strategy down yet. The priorities of young players and transfers are completely different. A brand new paradigm. Is Gundy on the cutting edge of that revolution, or is he part of the old structure, not ready or willing to adapt?

I hope we can keep and build and win that Championship(s) for years to come. It’s a brand new world.

Now for basketball…

I think our strategy for building our roster going forward should use our experience playing Texas this year. We’ve got to be honest with the fact that Texas pretty much dominated us in the game. So take the experience and decide where the deficiencies were e.g. schemes, coaching, talent, etc and work toward bulking those areas up. Using QB as an example. The whole Bowman vs Rangel debate is interesting but probably doesn’t represent the solution that we need. If Rangel is indeed better than Bowman he only really represents a minor upgrade to the QB position. Again looking at Texas as our bench mark we need someone significantly better if we are going to take things to the next level. Of course easier said than done for sure but it is the reality of what we are faced with.

You can tell if the ND guy is legit the same way you would a high school recruit (playing other hs kids), size/body frame and you watch his tape, check his footwork and leverage. One other clue is the other schools which are recruiting him. He dings on all of the above - he’s legit.

I would like Bowman back as a backup QB. I’m not excited about the prospect of him starting another full year. We’ve got to transition at some point. Honestly, I would like to see Rangel or Flores start in the Bowl.

I’d be okay with that, but if I know our history, if Bowman comes back, he’ll start. We don’t traditionally bench last year’s senior starter. Even when we should. The only one I can think of was Donovan Woods (won the bowl game and then moved to safety so Bobby Reid could start).

Jeff42 you only need to post once. We already know what your going to say. Perhaps you could save time by just saying ā€œstandard rant 3ā€ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦

He won’t step up into the pocket. He always back pedals and then escapes to pocket so that he can throw it away. Gundy has expressed his frustration with it this all season but he (Gundy) has said Bowman is who he is and that isn’t likely to change. Its hard to ā€œutilizeā€ him as a pocket passer when he won’t step up in the pocket and step into his throws. His arm is decent so he gets away with some poor mechanics. It’s probably the difference between being okay and being really good.

Apparently, I haven’t either. I respect your right to your opinion, but I will echo the sentiment. If Rangel is the guy I think we are in trouble next season. His downfield accuracy is very inconsistent. His mid range game is as well. He is as inaccurate a passer as you would expect a dual threat to be, but without the mobility. Or are we not paying enough attention when he has seen the field?? There is a reason that a very mediocre Bowman beat him out even though could only be a one year stop gap. It had to be determined that a year of experience for Rangel would not provide dividends. I expect him to hit the portal. I pray that Flores is capable and gets his chance. :cowboy_hat_face: GO POKES!!

I think he can be another Chelf. A guy with decent speed and decent enough arm to get the offense up and down the field. I don’t think the guy is gonna throw for 4,500 yards or more. I think he could be a 3,000 yard passer and 500 yards runner on a given season.

You don’t need a world beater at QB as long as the OL and running game is solid. My biggest concerns going forward are Kasey Dunn, and the development of the Defense. Both were very putrid this season.

If you watch Rangel carefully he already has the intangibles of what an experienced QB should have. If you watch Backfoot you can tell he didn’t learn some things in the six years he’s been around.

Rangel actually moves up in the pocket, has good pocket awareness, and gains positive yards. Because he knows when it’s time to tuck and run. If you watch him when he’s looking down the field he knows the exact spot that needs to be delivered on the throw for the intended route.

Backfoot runs backwards from the line of scrimmage and the pocket. He NEVER steps up into the pocket. He has NO pocket awareness because he hasn’t allowed himself to stay IN the pocket. His ability to tuck and run for positive yardage isn’t there. When Backfoot runs away and throws the ball away we find ourselves in 3rd and long situations instead of 3rd and short. Backfoot also has a tendency to throw the ball for the intended route too early, and he’s been guilty of throwing into double coverage.

So yea…….give me the guy that has the intangibles as opposed to a guy that rode the bench for three years before coming to OSU.

The North Dakota guy has offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, Auburn, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Boston College, NC State, Purdue, Virginia Tech, BYU, Iowa State, Pitt, and OSU. Seems like he is probably pretty good to me.

Bowman was behind future first round pick JJ McCarthy and Cade Mcnamara at Michigan. Two guys that would be locks to start for us over Bowman, Rangel, Gundy, Flores, etc. and he was only a backup for 2 years not 3.

Not disregarding any of your analysis about the pocket presence or anything like that. Just the last sentence is very misleading and not relevant to the Bowman/Rangel debate.

 I think you answered your own question.

Okay, I’ll put it this way then. Bowman is average at best, and what you’ve seen the last six years is what you’re going to get with Bowman. There’s no room for improvement or sustainment with him.

Rangel has two more years of eligibility, more recent experience (before the season started) and has improved since last season. Yet, he had seen the field the least time of all three guys. Why? I thought experience mattered to Gundy?

3 years remaining. Rangel only played in 4 games last year as an early enrolling true freshman.
