He probably knows more than you.
They didnât rate HS kids like that then. Stilly is a nice college town. Why didnât you go to Abnorman instead? You sound like an undercover LandSquatter!
OUâs campus is ugly. Itâs jammed up right in the middle of Norman. Norman itself is a sty with streets designed by a monkey. OSU is a pretty, open campus.
However, Norman is a bigger town with more activities and close to OKC. You canât get anywhere from Stillwater, so I get what heâs saying. I wasnât a partier. I was there for school, and I loved it. Top tier athletes arenât at college for school. They donât care what the school looks like, how good it is academically. They arenât even on campus that much. They take online classes, miss class and have tutors, take transferable courses offsite, etc. I donât think they have any real affinity with the school outside of the athletic facilities, fans, and coaches.
I donât find there to be a contradiction to both love OSU and Stillwater, but think that many athletes would rather be elsewhere, all things being equal.
I think a lot of that is the touted âCowboy Cultureâ. Guys there primarily and only to play football, no distractions, often small town guys who are interested in hunting and fishing for fun instead of drinking and trolling for girls.
You realize, I would hope, playing football is a full-time gig. They ainât got much time to be going to OKC, which is BLEH IMO. Whatâs so great about it, what can kids do there? What people like you, who hold that kind of opinion, donât realize is the best unis are in college towns. Whatâs there thatâs so great to do in places like Ann Arbor, Oxford, Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Notre Dame, Tallahassee, Knoxville, Columbia, etc???
Sure, there are a lot of college towns with not a lot going on. Although most of those places you named are still bigger than Stillwater. Tallahasseeâs just a quick drive to the gulf coast and four or five times bigger than Stillwater. But yes, a place like Tuscaloosa also had a very serious-minded football-focused attitude. Itâs no secret that a big part of why Sabab quit was the NIL money being a distraction to that.
Even full-time gigs have downtime.
Whatâs there to do in OKC?!?! We got concerts and events, the Thunder, clubs (if youâre into that), itâs got a great food scene, basic city amenities, what do you want?
Do you have a Ferris wheel from Venice beach thatâs been reconstructed near an okc river that runs less than half the days because itâs too windy ?
Maybe!
It certainly wasnât that way back in the late 70âs. Example Terry Miller was in a couple of classes of mine, actually sat right next to him in both while he did miss some he was probably there more than 50% of the time. Times have changes though and not sure if it has been for the best or not.
So for you itâs just bigger is better, lol. Thatâs why big cities are killing it w/ championships in football like Athens and Tuscaloosa. Great food scene in OKC? Thatâs funny!
Bigger is going to have more variety of activities and things to do. Thatâs just how it is. I already said there are small towns succeeding because itâs the business of football first there. If youâre going to Georgia and Alabama, youâre trying to make football your career. Itâs not that you canât get there from other schools, but obviously, theyâre NFL factories there.
I donât know why youâre trying to bag on OKC and the cuisine man. There are no shortage of articles being written about the emerging food scene here. Chefs are starting to gravitate back to their home states and away from the traditional food meccas. This has been the recent trend. You have every type of cuisine here and accomplished chefs making it. Itâs not like itâs Tulsa.
When I was at OSU from 76 to 81, I saw players like the great Terry Miller at bars at night. You are right, players dont have a lot of time outside of class and practice but they do like women and they get out
We were at OSU at the same time. I use to see Terry Miller out at Pistol Pattys and the like. What a great 1/2 back he was. He should have won the Heisman over Earl Campbell.
Itâs a huge difference nowadays with âvoluntaryâ weightlifting, meetings, watching film, etc.
Earl was bad asz but I was biased to Terry I was pulling for him. Any other year he wins it
I was there those years myself
I could get on board with that. TM had some back issues in his playing days so he was probably never at 100% physically.
I can agree here as well. I didnât see him play much in college but boy howdy some of those games playing for the houston oilers were unbelievable
Yes he was !!! He was almost the same in college. I met him at club near Houston back a long time ago when he had been out of pro ball. He was on crutches then, they say he can hardly walk now
