Video Game Thread

Showing some love to this thread for those playing with their new Christmas presents.

Apparently, there is a search function in PFB.

Disclaimer: I haven’t owned a console since the first xbox and it’s been years since I’ve played anything other than a little FIFA on Switch.

Put in about an hour on Valhalla last night with most of the settings on Novice. I’m really trying to get a feel for the controls, speed, and the movements. It has been pretty easy to understand. The game play is fairly simple so far, though I think as skills are added, that could get tougher. My lack of gaming, especially open world, is pretty obvious. It took me a while to figure out “the doors are locked, am I supposed to climb through the window?” type stuff.

The graphics are smooth. The story has been pretty clear with the looong intro movie. I had no idea about the AC backstory until getting totally confused by the movie and Googling it. That made it much clearer.

The fighting functionality is really simple so far. The landscape is friggin amazing. Beautiful.

ok so I also just started playing valhalla. I have played all AC’s up to this point. I HATE Odin’s sight! Am I just blind or what? I hear the coins that there is something nearby but whoever thought let’s make it white in a mostly white background is a dummy. ALSO, I hate that I have to get rations now to heal myself (because I have to use odins sight to find them). Finding rations is apparently super rare because I have spent an hour hunting the wilds for deer and stuff and haven’t come across snowberries or whatever is used to make rations. I usually only find those in a camp. Used to be if you ran away from danger and hid you would regenerate automatically.
I totally agree with you though the landscape graphics are gorgeous and the movement of the horses and people make sense and flow nice.

Just curious what did you think of Odyssey? I thought it was really good but a lot of AC fans seem to hate it

I’ve never played any AC games, but think they should make one where you hunt vampires. Like in the 17-1800’s.

I thought it was good! It was a good transition from their traditional game type to the type of games being created these days. I thought it was fun to finally play as a female if you wanted to. I thought the characters were funny and tough and I enjoyed playing as both. I’m not sure what people hated about it? I thought it was balanced enough!

The main complaint people seem to have with it is that it was more of a Greek RPG than an assassin’s creed game. Which they kinda have a point i guess, but it’s still one my favorites.

I’ve been playing a lot of NHL 21. I’m about 10 years in the future in a Preds franchise mode, and we’re dominant.

The video game industry recently has been very disappointing. Unfinished buggy piece of trash after another. You don’t get the full game until months after release when it finally works properly and has $60 worth of content. Hopefully it gets better with the next gen.

I’d be down for a good vampire hunting game, but that doesn’t really sound like Asassins Creed

Kinda like Blade, set in the Victorian era, you have to take down a worldwide vampire syndicate.

Sounds pretty dope honestly.

The funny thing is, I’m sure there is a game like that already. Wasn’t The Order 1887 supposed to be like that? (That game was a huge bust.)

I don’t disagree, but there’s a lot going on when it comes to game development. On one hand you have a developer that puts out a great game and the consumers love it. So now they’re under pressure to produce another game even bigger and even better than the last. They get to a point where they can’t keep up with the expectation of make it big, make it good, and make it fast, so they start pushing out unpolished products hoping it’s good enough that players won’t mind minor bugs in exchange for getting it quickly. On the other hand, you have these large companies that only care about profit, like EA or Zenimax. They want games published as quickly as possible, because the more games you put out, the more money you make. To get this done, developers and programmers work insane hours resulting in a drop in QA. So you need to reduce stress (and expectations) both internally and externally to get back to quality games.

On top of that, when was the last time game prices went up compared to the technology? Prices haven’t gone up in 15 years. I remember paying $50-60 for PS3 games. Every other market has increased price with inflation. Gaming has not.

All in all, if people stopped getting Twitter fingers and companies reduced their greed, we’d all be enjoying great games and stories.

I would contend that part of the reason prices haven’t changed is because

A.) We get them differently now. You don’t need a CD or disks to load games anymore, you can just MIND BLOWN download it!

B.) Games can be developed without having to have large studios and infrastructure.

You also get less and less content it seems. Most games aren’t full of content until you pay for all the DLC a few months down the line.

But games today are so MASSIVE, relatively. I mean they’re pushing 100 GB. Tell me that doesn’t cost more somewhere.

That’s very true. They break them up into pieces.

Destiny ended up costing me maybe $140-ish (I’d have to go back and check) from front to back.

Edit: Maybe more like $120.

Compared to the previous version of games where you got a game (nothing else included) and there were not a lot of DLCs. For FO76, we paid one price and continue to get the updates and DLCs for free.

See my comment about FO76
