You think the TV executives will want to keep paying $100 million a year for Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue etc? They just blew up a 100 year old conference to squeeze more money out of it. They’re going to do it to the ACC too when it’s time comes.
What's Next for the Big 12? As Colorado (Reportedly) Leaves Pac-12, Four Paths the League Could Take
First off, TV execs arent paying $100 Million for Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue etc. Theyre paying that for USC, Ohio St, Michigan, Penn St, Oregon, Wisconsin, Washington etc. and they ABSOLUTELY WILL continue to pay that. If you somehow think the payouts are going to get smaller…youve lost your mind. Every week the Big 10 is going to have a primetime, marquee game. So will the SEC. If you think the networks are going to walk away from that…
I’m aware who they’re paying for. Eventually they’ll cut the fat at the bottom.
Why would they need to “cut the fat”? Im starting to realize that you dont know how these things operate. If anyone was going to “cut” any fat, it would be the Conf themselves. Not the TV execs. The contracts and payouts are negotiated based on the big boys of your Conf. Not the red-headed nobodys in the Conf. You are living in a world that doesnt exist
Whoever you want to assign the blame of cutting the fat to is your choice. The bottom line is the big boys won’t continue letting Indiana make $100 million off their brand and dump them. Either kick them from the conference or they will leave and start a new one. Especially when everything goes to streaming in however many years it takes for that to be the standard live sports viewing platform. It may not be in the near future but it will come at some point.
No, no. IM not the one assigning people to cut the fat. You are. You initially said TV execs arent going to continue to pay big money…which they are. The contract will get bigger. You have that one wrong. You also said “theyll eventually cut the fat”. TV isnt doing that either. Streaming is done right now. The network is the same chief. That isnt effected by streaming. Again…you dont know how this stuff works.
The big 10 is making that money because of the market location and cable packages. When streaming becomes the standard platform of live sports their Rutgers and Maryland additions are worthless. The big boys will get theirs but there will be fat getting cut at the bottom.
So…you think the Big 12 is gonna “cut fat” too? If so…who? Is the SEC gonna cut Vandy?
The big 12 doesn’t have fat to cut right now. All the schools are relatively equal. It may change in a decade or two though. Vandy, Mizzou, Arkansas, SC, Kentucky, and MSU are the ones that are going to need to be worried in the next decade or two.
So hang on here…WVU, Colorado, KU, Tech…is not fat. But South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas and Mich St are??? I need you to explain to me what the difference is between KU and Kentucky? You think West Virginia offers MORE than Arkansas? Texas Tech is more of an athletic program than South Carolina? Why sis Arizona better than Mich St? PLEASE answer those specifically. Dont dance around it
Didn’t know Michigan state joined the SEC. Look at the big 12 deal and look at the SECs. There aren’t any teams in the big 12 that are getting paid significantly more than they’re worth. There are quite a few of them in the SEC. Don’t be obtuse.
You would have to be blind to not see that the Media execs are calling the shots. They caused the destruction of the PAC 12. When USC and UCLA left for the BIG10, they left the PAC with more fat than good programs and weren’t willing to pay money for it. That is why UTAH and ASU were forced to leave a conference that they did t want to. This should t even be an argument.
You said MSU. My apologies for thinking you meant Mich St. You started this with saying the Big 10 was going to cut fat and now are onto the SEC. So ill try to follow you here.
Answer my question. What does Kansas offer that Kentucky doesnt? Why would the SEC cut them…but you dont consider KU as “fat”? What does West Virginia offer that Arkansas doesnt? Wh do you feel like West Vir is a better program?
@mark55 Dont jump in late without understanding what is being said. Hes saying the TV execs arent going to pay “big money” to these Conf’s. Thats false. They are paying and will continue to. If you think someone other than Yormark is calling the Big 12 shots, then you drastically derestimate what that guy is doing. Hes bigtime.
And how are the media execs responsible for USC and UCLA leaving the PAC? If you are running FOX, the price youd pay for a product that included USC and Oregon is MUCH different than the one youd pay that didnt have those teams.
If KU was in the big 10 or sec they’d be fat. They’re not. They’re not getting paid multiple times their value. I don’t understand what you don’t get here. Kentucky ain’t worth $100 mil but they’re getting $100 mil. KU ain’t worth $100 mil and they’re not getting $100 mil.
His first call is to the media rights partner to see if he can make a deal with additional universities. Your ignorance of what is going on behind the scenes is fascinating.
I completely get that part. You are saying “cut the fat”. The Big 12 has fat. Just becuse they arent making the same type of dollars is irrelevant.
Hang on here…tell me what ive said or stated that is incorrect?
You think the TV contracts are going to get smaller???
No one in the big 12 has a significantly different value than the others. There is not fat to be trimmed. A couple million dollars in value spread around 15 other universities is nothing.
