10 Thoughts on Oklahoma State's 33-7 Loss to South Alabama

It feels like everyone in the athletic program from Weiberg down has achieved their dream job and thus have settled down and quit working hard.

Where is rock bottom? I’d say we are pretty f’ing close.

I think every player on the team is getting 20-30k including the walkons. We could pay for some dudes but Gundy doesn’t even bother recruiting them 95% of the time.

Stoops was smart enough to hire a OC then let him coach. That has only happened with Holgorsen and Munken.

It’s $10k-$15k from pokes with a purpose. Anything over that is an individual NIL deal.

One other thing worth noting for OSU: Where’s the “dudes”? OSU has been at its best when its identified who its “dudes” are and gets them the ball. Justice Hill was a dude. Chuba Hubbard was a Dude. Washington was a dude. No offense to Nixon or the MSU transfer, but Ollie is clearly the dude of that room, yet got 5 total touches in the game (3 carries, 2 catches). Striebling (spelling?) has looked like a dude but got hurt in this game and hasn’t been the focal point in prior games. Pressley is a college dude (elite level agility, but way undersized to be a future NFLer). The rest of the receiver room, including Bray, are JAGs.

On the plus side, with us learning the 3-3-5, we’ll be well-prepared when realignment happens again in 2030 to compete in the AAC.

That includes the walkons though right?

Rock bottom is when no one is going to the games. Just like basketball.

Yes. Walk-ons too

Was it that Stoops was smart enough, or that he had an AD in Castiglione who held him accountable to do so. We don’t have that kind of AD at OSU. We have the coach’s neighbor and fishing buddy as AD.

Well that could get you a lot closer to 20k+ a guy if they’re eliminated. If you pay the dudes instead of everyone I think we have a decent shot at getting some good players to come here if Gundy ever attempts to recruit them.

It depends more I think on how much money is donated. Pokes with a purpose provides for all sports. Each athlete gets some type of $ amount. I doubt cross country gets the same amount as football but they do get something.

Eliminating NIL from walkons would help some but don’t think it would raise it too much. More donations to PwAP is the best way to get that $ amount up. Big donors need to write big checks.

One other note: On the ‘Grades’ article, PFB gives the MVP to Oliver. I’d note that Oliver looks great when playing within 3 yards of the LOS. But he looks lost as ever in coverage.

Who would want to cut a big check with this staff in charge at this point?

Big donors don’t write big checks to support programs that are satisfied with mediocrity, because big donors didn’t become wealthy on the backs of mediocrity.

That’s the challenge…

I’ll slightly disagree with you, and point out also that your overall point is correct. There are probably a few players on this roster that shouldn’t be playing at a P5 school, much less take the field.

People complain that Bowman isn’t what he was at Tech. I sparked that concern early on because he’s been warming a bench for the last two years. People also forget that while at Tech he was coached by a guy that had a lot of experience as an OC and was eventually an NFL HC. Right now, he has a WR coach pretending to be an OC in the press box working on year four.

Perhaps the most baffling thing is not finding ways to get the ball to your biggest playmakers. I can promise you any OC that’s worth a dam will. That’s not on Gordon or Presley. They don’t get to decide how often they get the ball. Dunn’s had ONE YEAR where he’s had a top 50 offense, and that just happened to be the year we made the Big 12 CCG with a defense that finished 9th in the country. If you can’t get things figured out by year four as an OC then you probably don’t need to be in that position.

Dickey got here in 2019. Besides his first season the OL has largely been a disappointment. You’ll have the homers on here saying “Least sacks given up in 2021!!!” while totally ignoring the fact that we had a mobile QB that was actually decent at avoiding defenders. He might have been good in the past, but he’s only proven how bad he can be in Stillwater. His OL has no technique, no awareness, and no physical toughness. Which tells me the development and evaluation of what he has at the OL is so far off it’s almost like a practical joke.

The fact that both of them were retained last season tells me Gundy’s not real concerned with winning championships or making a playoff. The only way that’s going to happen is if he’s forced to hire someone he doesn’t like, or accidentally hires someone that ends up being great.

In all honestly would the NIL make that big of a difference with Gundy in charge? We’re recruiting essentially where we were pre NIL. Gundy does not put any effort into recruiting and it shows big time.

Exactly…
