Mike Gundy Goes on Tangent Saying 'In Most Cases' Negative People Voicing Options 'Can't Pay Their Own Bills'

Yea he didn’t say he was talking about OSU fans. Putting in words that aren’t there. And if you think that the T-shirt is such a big deal then nothing I am going to say is going to sway you anyway.

Well then if is as bad as you claim then I’d be surprised if they don’t fire him before tomorrow. Coaches have been fired for less than that.

Usually it goes, a) I can control what I can control and not what I cannot control b) I can control my effort and judge to what standard my effort should effect so c) I put in the amount of effort to get to that standard. It’s not usually a then b then c) so if I fail to meet the standard, I couldn’t control that anyway because someone else was better than me.

IMO Optics matter to shallow people and people who have an agenda. Not to people who care, are objective, are critical thinkers and want to know the truth. I’m rooting for Gundy but if the program doesn’t turn around soon then he should be gone simple as that. One thing I am not going to do is demonize him over stuff he didn’t say.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. In the moment it is always true. Sure there are things you can do to overcome that but usually it comes after getting your behind whipped aka a learning experience.

To be clear, I would be shocked if any of us on here hate Gundy, the person. But we are beyond fed up with the decision-making and lack of accountability from Gundy, the football coach. It’s evident by his tone and words that certain expectations and results do not apply to him.

Gundy has always reportedly admired Bill Snyder. Do you think Bill would have ever said anything remotely close to what Gundy spouted off today? Whether right or wrong, Gundy IS the face of OSU football. As such, he is held to a higher standard, and is paid handsomely to do so. More and more often, he’s falling short of that standard. Notice I haven’t even mentioned our record. Or statistical rankings. Or lack of conference championships. Or current program trajectory. Don’t need to. It’s time for change. He HAS to go.

I’m sorry, but it’s only fans that are complaining. Why would non-fans care at all? Of course he’s talking about fans, and most OSU fans are alumni.

No saving this one, Gundy just stepped in it. It happens.

Yea not my kind of fans. Obviously he was talking about a subset of folks who comment on OSU. Not all fans. Again putting words in his mouth.

Gundy was asked a question about how being an assistant coach has helped him as a head coach–a completely softball question. Instead of some generic answer, he decided to say:

“In most cases, the people who are negative and voicing their opinions are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves. They’re not taking care of their own family.” Coach Gundy said. They’re not taking care of their own job, but they have an obligation to speak out and complain about other people because it makes them feel better. But then in the end, they go to bed at night and they’re the same failure they were before they said anything negative about anybody else."

There is no way to spin that. He wasn’t making some profound statement about society or keyboard warriors. He was directly challenging those who have been critical of this abysmal season with the ridiculous “can’t pay their bills” statement. He works in an industry that faces intense public scrutiny. The two most criticized people in Oklahoma are Gundy and Venables. It’s always been that way. But he’s been handsomely rewarded for that scrutiny. Gundy’s got it all wrong; the true failures are people who can’t admit they’re wrong and change course. A failure is someone who blames others for their own shortcomings.

You are free to believe/say what you want. As I’ve said before I’m not going to demonize him or anyone by taking his/their words and making them fit that narrative. If he actually said that all OSU fans can’t pay their bills, take care of there children , etc then yea I’d be with you but he didn’t say that so there you go.

There’s no great mystery to what he said. We all know who he’s speaking to directly without him having to completely identify it. The issue is that you’re in denial, and even with the truth punching you directly in the nose, you still refuse to acknowledge you’ve been punched in the nose :man_shrugging:.

Adding one final comment to the topic of HCMG’s presser comments I agree with much of what is said by Nathan in this video starting at 37:23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpToEkX4p1Y

Man, you and Nathan have to go through some heavy mental gymnastics to excuse what Gundy said. Talk about twisting words to fit a narrative. Does the cognitive dissonance hurt too much to admit the truth?

 :100:. Then they have the audacity to tell me I don’t know anything :joy:. I may not know everything, but this one isn’t hard to figure out at all.

Yea well he is applying what Gundy ACTUALLY said and trying to formulate an opinion. Can’t ask for more than that. Also I don’t register any apologies, He is pretty harsh on Gundy, fair but harsh.

You’re in denial Bro!

Nope, presented what I consider rational thought on the subject. That’s how I approach things. If you all want to do it differently go ahead. It’s the internet and there are no downsides to what or how you say things. Moving on now.

Extremely bad look for Gundy. The head football coach at most universities is the most visible, most powerful, most important piece of the University. He needs to win games, but he also needs to know how to handle the media in the best way possible for his university. Especially when in the midst of a season as porous as this one. Im an OU fan and things in Norman arent good either. Venables may not be the guy. He may be fired after next year. But, I couldnt be more content with how hes handled himself and the program in the middle of this debacle. Fans want answers. Media askd tough questions. You have to juggle losing your locker room, fanbase and support for your job from the administration. Through all of it, Brent has kept everything in as much of a calm state as he can. Hes been accountable . Hes continued to answer tough questions. Hes maintained the same level of media availability as he had prior. The only thing hes failed to do , is win games. Unfortunately, thats what hes being paid for. Gundy turned himself into a character a while ago…this is the latest in what is an extremely, extremely dumb thing to do.
