This has been the narrative from some naysayers for a while about how the game is “ruined” or that its going away. That couldnt be further from the truth. You see the numbers that Colorado is bringing in? You see the numbers the SEC has gotten and continues to get? You see that the projected numbers are for the SEC next year? The Big 10’s projections? The games are going to be better than ever. Sure there will be some casualties left in the wake of the realignment such as Cal, Stanford and some like that. But…the casual fan isnt tuning in to those games anyway. “its going to become the haves and have nots” Dude, its been that way already. The Big 8 was dominated by OU/Neb. They won 75 Conf titles. The Big 12 was dominated by OU. The SEC is dominated by the same ones. The Big 10 is Michigan and Ohio St. Florida St and Clemson have been the ACC. Where has it changed?!?! Thats how its been!
All this is your opinion ketchup. You really think that virtually eliminating a bunch of teams from any chance of a playoff much less a CC is good for the game ? Then you only say that because you’re in the haves right now. You or i don’t know what type of super conferences they will eventually come up with. It shouldn’t be where the money teams can give NIL money for walk ons to keep them from other teams. That a Switzer project and you know it
Okay Etinne is horrible, the lowest graded lineman we had last year. I’ll promise Cooper is an upgrade to him. BYU finally saw that , he’s horrible there. You keep saying we lost starters
Cobb was going to USC.reguardless
Harper is playing spot , same as here. He got 200k to go there. We can’t afford that. You conveniently left that out
JP how many times havd I said I didn’t want to lose him. You should enlighten yourself on exactly what went on in the clubhouse first
It’s laughable you think Dom is the RB Gordon is
Until we get NIL money to compete we will struggle keeping good players
All I will say is that there is a reason the NFL has strict rules regarding player salaries. Without those rules the half dozen, or even less, teams with the largest markets would dominate year in and year out. If that happened the NFL would be decimated. They would still exist but the fan base would be much smaller and most of the country wouldn’t give a rats a*$*$ about the NFL. With NIL now a thing college football now has the same issue but without a way to regulate player pay. If this stays as it is what was avoided by the NFL will be the fate of college football.
That’s a very good point @bruce4 very thought out point !! Basically true about college football. Don’t be surprised if congress doesn’t get involved at some point
It’s not only the salary cap that has brought parity to the NFL. Another thing that has made the NFL what it is today is equal revenue sharing. Without that, probably about half the teams in the league wouldn’t be in operation.
This is something that will never exist in college football due to the 1984 Supreme Court ruling that gave conferences the right to negotiate their own media deals (prior to the ruling it was the NCAA who had control). This ruling, in my opinion, is why college football is in its current state.
You are correct. I really was really referring to all the financial parity tools used by the NFL when calling out player salaries. I for sure could have chosen better words for what I was trying to say. Cheers.
No worries
"You really think that virtually eliminating a bunch of teams from any chance of a playoff much less a CC is good for the game " Ok, this is an honest discussion. How is this any different? Look at Pre-NIL/Portal. The pool from which the National Champion came was about 8-10 teams? How is it any different now? If anything, you can argue that the portal has ADDED a few teams to that pool. You say its now the “Haves VS Have Nots”…ITS ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY. So I ask you again, how has NIL/Portal changed it?
“It shouldn’t be where the money teams can give NIL money for walk ons to keep them from other teams. That a Switzer project and you know it”. Switzer hasnt had a hand in college football in over 30 years. Youve mentioned that a few times now and I hate to tell you that “walk-on” types arent changing the landscape of college football in any way, shape or form. The best legitimate “walk-on” that OU currently has is Gavin Freeman. HES GOT 13 CATCHES IN 18 GAMES. Hes currently on scholarship and Im glad hes wearing an OU uniform. But you think somehow that kid and others like him are somehow impacting the landscape of college football? You think a kid like that somehow tilts the scales towards OU?
Revenue sharing. Free agency. The NFL draft structure. Salary cap. Those are all factors that contribute to parity within the NFL. Its not limited to the salary cap alone. For the people who act like somehow the NIL/Portal have eliminated parity within college football…go look at how much “parity” there was prior to it. The Haves have ran college football and will continue to do so. People speaking about the popularity of college football fallling off due to the portal/NIL are sadly mistaken. College football is THRIVING. The expanded playoff will be MASSIVE. The new-look Conf weekly slates will be MASSIVE draws. For you people to think that popularity is going away if Washington St or Cal or Purdue or OSU isnt involved in the Nat Title hunt…then you havent been paying attention to the last 50 years of college football
NIL and the portal have just added to the difficulty for the non BB and given an extra leg up to the BB. Not good
You missed the point back in the day Switzer, and he wasn’t the only coach btw, made offers to many many players who would be part of the team but never play. Essentially removing talent for other teams to use. Playing players with NIL to be on the team but with little chance to play is a similar concept
The NIL and the portal to a certain extent are dampening parity, to a great degree. Now the portal can also aid parity so there is that.
I understand and agree on what Switzer did. The difference is that some of those guys would end up being STARS. They were good enough to be scholarship kids that could flat out be difference makers. You missed my point that offering a walk-on kid like Gavin Freeman or the Lineman from Santa Fe is not remotely the same type of impact upon a roster. With all due respect to those kids…they arent impacting a W-L record in any way. That NIL opportunity to walk-ons does far more for the kid than it does for OU
As far as college football not being popular if only 5-6 teams will ever be competitive given the current environment well it will be true. I could give a rats but about watching big 10 or SEC games now and I dam sure won’t be interested once they for sure become the only game in town because of NIL and the cheating that comes with it. There are reasons why the NFL revenue shares i.e. strict financial rules and that is one of them.
In the past OSU has had a lot of walk-ons that have had a huge impact so it is a big deal
Sanders was cancer.
“As far as college football not being popular if only 5-6 teams will ever be competitive given the current environment well it will be true” First off, thats simply opinion. Secondly, the numbers dont indicate that the popularity will drop off. In any way. The projections show a massive jump in revenue, eyeballs, sponsorships and so on. Zero reason for it to drop off. The number of competitive games will increase. The playoff has expanded. No clue where you get that from. You saying only 5-6 teams will be competitive is also crazy talk. I can give you 5-6 from the SEC alone that wille be “competitive”. That makes no sense. How in the world will any of the the current “Haves” somehow go away?
" I could give a rats but about watching big 10 or SEC games now" Then you are definitely in the minority and therefore wont effect the produst as is. If someone loves college football, they arent going to turn away from the sport now that the meaningful games have increased. If you think LESS people are going to watch…then youre wrong.
“because of NIL and the cheating that comes with it” Dont be so naive. NIL and cheating have been in college football for a very long time. If you think the legalization has somehow introduced that to the college game…go watch some 30 for 30’s or ask about Hart Lee Dykes or basically any successful program in the 80’s/90’s.
There has never been any type of revenue sharing or attempt to level a playing field in college football and its as popular as its ever been. For you to think that will somehow lessen due to you or some other apparent casual fans who “dont watch the SEC or Big 10”…is crazy talk
I will only say that for 99% of the people that I know who follow college football really only care about one college team and that college team is where they went to college. This must sound strange to an OU fan where most OU fans didn’t even attend school there. Large numbers of bandwagon fans are the norm for BB teams and no one else. Also my sample size is pretty big having worked in the fortune 100 corp world for 40 years I’ve known a lot of college graduates. So given my world view here I don’t believe that I am in the minority.
The Ol “OU fans didn’t even go to school there”. I did not either. I graduated from Nebraska. But my fandom for OU runs pretty deep. My Dad was an attorney that graduated from OU. My mom is a retired school teacher who graduated from OSU. If you think that 99% of college football only cares about their school……then again you’re wrong. The numbers back me up. If you and your group feels like college football is on a path of destruction due to a “Have V Have Nots”……then you haven’t paid attention throughout the history of college football. That has been the case long before NIL & the Portal showed up & it will be the case many years from now.
First off the majority of fans want to feel some type of allegiance to the school they attended. I like rivalries, a connection to a conference In watching a game. I won’t and know many others that won’t make a big effort to watch a game they have little interest
Ketchup you know what I was referring to about Switzer. , he had a three deep roster that could start anywhere before the scholarships were cut to 85. Nebraska the same Where does it stop being too much. College wasn’t meant for kids to become millionaires before enrollment. Guess I’m old school, I like playing teams we have some sort of identity to
Ketchup you are only giving an opinion, same as us. If you weren’t a fan of a BB I think I’m sure you would be calling foul yourself
