You go and get another young and eager OSU guy like we did back in 2005. Like a Zac Robinson.
I never said OSU couldnāt find a guy like that. They absolutely could. No clue how you took what I said and got that out of it.
I have no problem with someone who wants to move on from Gundy. But moving on from Gundyā¦ā¦& handing the reigns to a guy whoās never recruited, coordinated, or ran a staff? In the era of the portal & NILā¦ā¦youāre gonna take a dude with zero experience in the college game and hand him the keys? Thatās a very, very boldā¦ā¦or ignorant move.
Iām just saying to prevent it from being a stepping stone maybe we could get Zach in here for 15-20 years to enhance the program.
Fortune favors the bold baby!!!
@bill18 Iām aware that OSU could push Gundy out & hire a guy that takes the Cowboys to the next level. You just need to be aware that it could just as easily go in the opposite direction too. Thereās been no one in the history of the program thatās been able to do at OSU what Gundy has. Les Miles went 16-16 in Conf & Jimmy Johnson went 17-15. Gundy has his flaws & again, I wonāt argue against someone wanting him gone. But if history is any indication of what type of program youāll have without Gundyā¦ā¦Iād be a little careful. And if the best option you can come up with is a guy whoās most prestigious job is the pass game coordinator for one yearā¦ā¦.
I went through 0-10-1 under Pat Jones. Iāve seen the worst that could happen. Iām willing to risk it. Because the missed field goal in Ames in 2011 and the goal line run to the pylon in Arlington in 2021 hurt more than a losing record ever will. To be so achingly close to a chance at a Natty and not getting itā¦ā¦dude you donāt want that pain. To be shown multiple times that youāll never be quite enough to join the special club of Natty winners. Man, Iād take 0-12 3 years in a row for 1 Natty. No matter who the head coach is.
Lets not use any logic. We my never get a natty. You think we can lose 36 in a row and bounce back. I know money is out there but lol.
No, the Natty firstā¦then lose the 36. Cause if we lose 36 straight, thereās no way we can win a Natty the next season. Haha!!
For everyone who is ok with ridding us of HCMG and replacing with someone who can compete for a natty. The reality is that 9 times out of 10 if the guy replacing HCMG starts to even smell like a natty winning coach while at OSU they will be gone and winning a natty somewhere else. Something that should be considered when contemplating a coaching change at OSU.
Baylorās been broken down twice and rebuilt. Theyāve played for the conference title twice since 2017, won it once, and theyāve played for and won a couple of NY6 bowls. So this notion that OSU would completely fall apart without Gundy just isnāt a guarantee. If you find the right coaches you can still find ways to sustain success.
The problem here is I donāt think most people are expecting Gundy to win a natty. I think a lot of people would like to start seeing us win the conference and an NY6 bowl every three years or so. We have one in 18 years with Gundy. Now, if youāre a part of the āyou donāt know how it used to be crowdā then you shouldnāt worry if or when Gundy leaves.
You can pay a coach 4-5 mil a year to come to OSU and give you 7-8 wins a year. As long a the administration does itās homework and gets a decent coach that sustains āwinningā as some people here like to call it, will continue wether Gundy is here or not. So it really makes no difference.
Gary Patterson wouldnāt change some things up or his philosophy (Gundy is the same way). Sometimes when things change your perspective and philosophy need to change with the times. Thatās what got Patterson canned from TCU after being one of the best coaches in their history (sound familiar here?). So far, looking at year one without Patterson. Everything looks like itās currently working out with TCU.
The notion that OSU would find the right guy for the second time in their history isnt a guarantee either. You mention Baylor. Rhule went 19-20. Aranda is 20-16 and is coming off a 6-7 record. Now, I think Rhule is a really good coach but the jury is still out on Aranda. Would I take both of those guys right now over Gundy? Yes. No doubt. But again, youre looking at very small successful window at Baylor. Look at the other hires. Look at the other OSU hires. Look at what EVERY program goes through when they lose a guy like Gundy. OU was able to do it after Stoops. They crashed and burned after Switzer. FSU has had its struggles. Bama went through it before Saban. USC. Michigan. The list goes on and onā¦and those were programs that are in better shape than OSU. Go look at Va Tech after Beamer. KState after Snyder the first time. Mizzou after Pinkel. Look at those schools that are comparable to the program that OSU has been historically. Its much harder to find the right guy than you think. YES THEY CAN DO IT. But they can also swing and miss and set your program back a while. If you just admit that part, ill move on and let you carry on with the other guy
Iāve tried pointing that same thing out and always get roasted for it.
Let me ask you this: How much longer would you have wanted Bob Stoops to stay assuming he never wins a second Natty at OU? How many more seasons would you have given him if Linc wasnāt the heir apparent and there was no list of names in Joe Cās desk?
Thatās where I am with Gundy. I canāt see him ever winning another conference championship much less a Natty. Him coaching another 5 to 10 years doesnāt change that. Not even with OU/Texas leaving. Not even with an expanded playoff. So, if we know we arenāt ever gonna get there under the current head coach, why not change despite the risk?
On Bob: I wanted him to retire after the Clemson debacle in 14. You could hear it in his voice. You could see it in his demeanor on the sidelines. He had softened. He had become complacent. The staff seemed the same way. It was a stale feeling around the program. Neither Baker nor Lincoln by themselves were gonna change the trajectory of the program. Those two were a perfect fit at the perfect time. So as a fanā¦ā¦I was ready to move on in 14ā.
I have no issue with anyone who wants Gundy gone. I completely get it. But itās the unwillingness to admit by a couple people on here that moving on from Gundy could also result in the program falling off a cliff for a while.
Gundy isnāt winning a Nat Title. And the playoff expansion has made it much harder for programs like OSU to win one as well. So Iāll ask youā¦ā¦if the odds of OSU winning a Nat Title are extremely slim as it isā¦ā¦then why fire a guy for being unable to achieve the impossible? Itās like firing a guy for not being able to make your car capable of flying. Again, Iām just playing Devils Advocate here.
I understand your side of it. We could fall off a cliff. Oh well. Iām willing. Depending on non-con scheduling, it only takes 3 conference wins in 9 games to make a bowl since thereās like 40 of them now. The bowl streak is all that matters to some. So treading water would be easy. Nobody can tread water forever though. You either sink or swim. Itās a decision that needs to be made.
My theory is you have to learn to walk before you run. Letās find a coach who can make it to the conference title game more than once a decade and win the conference more than once in his coaching career. My grand kids can worry about national titles. If Gundy coaches another 10 years, Kansas will have a new stadium and will win the conference twice before osu does again.
And there will still be people screaming it could go the other way!
Just being in the top half of the conference and never winning it isnāt much of a step up.
Iāll agree IT COULD fall apart, but itās also why I said āas long as the administration does its homeworkā. You can find a good coach thatās half the price of Gundy and still get 7 wins (if thatās what you desire). Les Miles already proved that could be done consistently, and he was fired twice afterwards.
I would like to think that Shrum and Weiberg arenāt compete idiots, and that our boosters arenāt as out of whack as some at other universities youāve mentioned. I would like to think with OU and Texas heading out the door that OSU could be a program that probably SHOULD win more conference titles. I guess only time will tell .
And you donāt see that with Gundy? I can promise you we have a multitude of fans that can see it. I could see it after the 48-0 loss to K State and 37-16 loss to KU. OU fans shouldāve been able to see it after the 28-0 first quarter shellacking Gundy received in Norman. At that point, the paddle people shouldāve just dragged Gundy to the 50 yard line, pulled his pants down, and given their paddles to the OU frat boys to give it their best shot.
