Because you make stuff up and then just move on to the next thing. “If the starting QB doesn’t get hurt then Will Howard doesn’t see the field” This is not true at all. There was no injury. Howard was brought in to start AFTER Mccord was processed. Nothing to do with Mateer. You made a statement that was patently false and then I responded. To which you started saying something about Mateer that had absolutely nothing to do with what you said. Mateer hasnt had the numbers at OU that he had at WSU. I am not arguing that. Do you think he wouldve somehow been better off staying in Pullman? To say yes is again, a ridiculously dumb thing to say.
Would Mateer have been better off going to a school that the head coach was an offensive guy instead of a defensive guy?
I dont really think it matters what the HC’s background is. I think it matters more who your OC is & what personnel you have around you. Mateer seems to be somehow being used as an example of why you dont go to a blueblood from a middle of the road…and I think thats a massive stretch. Mateer wasnt as good as people had hoped. He was probably disappointing as far as final numbers go. But I think the people blaming him are completely overlooking what his supporting cast is. One clown compared this to Ohio St and its supporting cast. OU’s best TE is a converted LB. Their best RB is a true freshman. They are starting 3 freshman on the OL. The WR core consists of 1 that is likely to even get drafted. Mateer was very average. But the parts surrounding the QB in Norman are not near what they are in Columbus. Now, thats a problem. Thats nothing that anyone is expected to feel sorry for. But it is not comparable right now. Youre going to see some position coaches fired and portal money being spent on that side of the ball.
You may be right. But wasn’t he the number one guy coming out of the portal? Do you think his draft chances have went up?
He was the #1 QB. Jaydn Ott was the #1 RB. He got paid 800k and ran for 68yds. If youre talking about draft stock, it didnt change one way or the other. His throwing motion and mechanics in the pocket are still the same as they were in Pullman. Again, to be clear here, im not saying he wasnt a disappointment. He was. But the problem I have as an OU fan is with the supporting cast. The defensive side is loaded with NFL talent. Is loaded with guys who were developed. Recruits very well. The offensive side is not the same. Im not absolving Mateer. But hes not had as much help as OU QB’s before him.
I agree with you on his throwing motion and mechanics. But everyone knew that especially Arbuckle. So are you disappointed in Arbuckle?
I have a paid subscription to SoonerScoop and the masses are hot and bothered by both Mateer and Arbuckle. Moreso Mateer. As for me, I think it’s inexperience for both Arbuckle and Mateer. Also a little bit of how Venables thought the best path for this team to win was by playing more conservative at times. Listen, I love Venables. But he’s got to handle the offensive hires the way he does the defensive ones. He’s got to hold those guys as accountable. Has to be as demanding on those guys as well. I think Mateer and Arbuckle are learning that the SEC isnt Washington St. OU fans have to realize that it isn’t our God given right to have a superstar at QB every year. Kyler Murray. Baker Mayfield. Jalen Hurts. Caleb Williams. All were superstars. None won a playoff game or Nat Championship. Josh Heupel wasn’t some superstar……but he won. If OU gets a better supporting cast around Mateer, he’ll be good enough to win a Nat Title. Can he carry them
to one by being the best player on offense? No.
I like Arbuckle. I’m going to give him a pass for this year. But I’m going to need to see what he does this upcoming season. Both he & Mateer will have a season under their belt.
Now we agree 100%.
I wish some of the people on here would have felt that way about Gundy. After Monken he wouldn’t hire and recruit the supporting staff or hold anyone accountable till someone made him fire someone.
Like I said, ive got a paid one over on SoonerScoop. The masses over there are lunatics. But I will say that there arent any that are just willing to agree with everything the HC does simply because hes their HC. There are some on here that refuse to see anything Gundy did wrong, even now that hes gone. Its as stubborn and defiant as youll see.
I agree
Did you forget what I said? Or did you just not care because it didn’t fit the narrative you wanted? As I’ve said before. Going to a BB doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to have better offensive athletes. Mateer is the example here.
“Going to a BB doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to have better offensive athletes. Mateer is the example here”
Matter is playing with better athletes at OU than hes ever played with. So going to a BB is virtually a guarantee that you will have better athletes.
Are you trying to say that John Mateer wouldve been better off, by any metric, by staying at Washington St? And you are trying to make Mateer the point by which you validate not having better players at a BB (which is largely inaccurate). I think the buyer beware thing to worry about as it pertains to a guy like Mateer is worrying that the jump up in competition is occassionally too much for a WSU/UNT guy.
Do you think its more likely that Eric Morris can find a better supporting cast by scouring the “G5 teams and the teams none of the other power conferences wanted”…or that Ohio St would be able to have a better supporting cast?
One CAN search high and low and do a good job of putting together a good product. No one is saying that you cant do that. But Ohio St pumps those guys out at a higher rate than you pump out dumbassery…which is really saying something.
And what is the other equation to this? It’s the talent on the other team. If they have better defensive athletes than your offensive ones (which has been the case for OU) then you’re going to struggle a little more
.
When this conversation first started I never brought up Ohio State. The entire point of my conversation was about choice. In which, you and your dumbassery bu++ buddy Heychump decided to hijack and read into something that wasn’t there in the first place
. As I’ve said before, I’ll just continue wait while eventually being proven right.
Hey champ,
You mean you’ll delusionally ignore all evidence that goes against your prejudice and hyper focus on the smallest thing that supports your entrenched opinion? That’s called confirmation bias, and yes, you absolutely will do that.
You didnt answer my questions…
Are you trying to say that John Mateer wouldve been better off, by any metric, by staying at Washington St?
Do you think its more likely that Eric Morris can find a better supporting cast by scouring the “G5 teams and the teams none of the other power conferences wanted”…or that Ohio St would be able to have a better supporting cast?
You may not have been the one who initially mentioned Ohio St, but you did reference Will Howard not seeing the field if it werent due to injury…and that is just a made up or incorrect narrative. Because I ask you again, what injury are you referring to?
Let’s try to stay on track here and answer those for me.
Who’s been more correct over these last 365+ days? You or me? Your “evidence” hasn’t quite supported your position for OSU football since then in case you haven’t noticed.
What I’m saying is before transferring to Oklahoma, Mateer was projected to be a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. Now he’s projected to be a 4th round pick (according to Mel Kiper). Before transferring to Oklahoma his draft status would’ve rarely moved according to ESPN had he stayed at Washington State. He still would’ve been a 4th round pick or maybe a little higher. So tell me what exactly Mateer gained on his player profile besides being in an OU uniform when it comes to his draft placement? Because with that evidence (as HeyChump likes to say) in what metric whatsoever did the OU offensive athletes make him better?
That wasn’t the point I was as making at all. The point I was making is that Mestemaker would face harder challenges in the Big 10 compared to the Big 12. That’s just purely factual. Going to Ohio State isn’t going to guarantee him to be a better prospect. Kind of like how I pointed out with Mateer as you see above. There’s been times where Ohio State’s defense wasn’t very good. Kind of like OU’s offense this year. I never said it would be better to go to OSU. Only said he had more familiarity with Morris and his system. If Morris can get him the tools needed it might be a better situation for him.
Hey champ,
Ok, then why are QBs getting drafted out of the SEC and Big 10 more than the Big XII? History doesn’t support your poor hypothesis.
Yet just as many Oklahoma State quarterbacks have won a super bowl as Ohio State quarterbacks.
